Volume 2 Chapter 4-2 Arrogant Hero VS Misfortune Hero
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
”Do you know there’s a secret trick to turning doll princesses into money? Trust me on this, and we’ll split the profits neatly.”
The nerve of this guy.
Is he dumb, or is he deliberately trying to make me uneasy? Every instinct in me tells me it could be both. He’s already tried peeping at my stats multiple times with his scouting skill—it’s practically laughable. My level 4 stats repel his attempts with ease, so his skill must be pathetic. Scouting is supposed to be a higher-tier ability; it should succeed much more frequently.
Well, my high Stealth skill might be helping. That’s a bonus. But c’mon, scouting isn’t even hard to level up.
Wait—remember what Ms. Marsha said?
”What job can gain a scouting skill just ten days after summoning?”
The answer clicks. He started as a thief and recently changed jobs to a rogue at level 12.
Everything fits now. A rogue can use magic arrows and naturally carries a dagger. That explains Alex perfectly.
But his gear? Too shabby for level 12. Most likely, he sold it all for the money needed to fund his job change. Makes sense—he wouldn’t be able to enter dangerous dungeons in his condition, so he’s lingering in safe zones to grind cash. Given his lousy personality, it’s not like anyone would lend him money out of friendship.
Yeah, this guy’s scraping the bottom of the barrel. But still, it’s risky to assume too much. Better to prepare for anything.
”You, go back to the inn first,” I commanded Ms. Nina curtly.
She raised no objections, her quick wit catching on. Without a word, she turned and left.
One less thing to worry about—at least there’s no chance of her becoming a hostage now.

When I reached the guild hall, I discovered the cafeteria was open, which was… surprising. At this hour? Strange. Stranger still—no customers.
”I’m starving! Buy me a meal. I’m broke!”
Before I could even react, Alex shoved past me and flopped into a seat. Just like that.
Should I just… leave him there to get caught for dining and dashing?
”I’ll trade you some special information for food.”
He piped up, acting all smug.
Yeah, right. Leaving him alone might backfire later, so I reluctantly stepped into the cafeteria after him.
”Welcome!”
The waitress, Shea-Shea—technically Mr. Mauro, the scribe’s assistant—greeted us quietly. Beautiful and curvy, the brunette exuded grace, but her reserved demeanor made it impossible for us to hold a real conversation.
Alex’s eyes lit up like fireworks the second he caught sight of her.
”Beautiful girl spotted!”
He nearly sang, grinning like an idiot.
Maybe he was somewhat tolerable back on Earth. Or maybe, without any real power, this is just the same mischievous troublemaker who never grew up. Amazing what people do with strength—it changes them. Makes them reckless, erratic.
I’m reminded of this quiet classmate I knew back in school. A total nobody—until I found out he was a notorious player-killer in some MMORPG. He hunted me down in that game so many times I lost count. You’d never expect people like him to go rogue online. And now? I’m wondering how many players like that got summoned here.
What do you do when someone like that gains real power? …Could Alex be one of them?
The simple menu in the cafeteria offered bread with salted bacon. It wasn’t much, but in a quiet village like this, it was a feast. I ordered grape juice, while Alex went for wine—of course.
His eyes lingered on Shea-Shea’s chest the entire time she walked back to the kitchen. Shameless. Then, with a sly grin, he turned to me.
”Hey, I’ll show you a trick to pay for a meal.”
Alex said, leaning back.
Here comes the supposed “special information.”
”Do you know that if your stats—VIT and LUK—both hit 20, you won’t lose anything, even if you die?”
I gave him a blank look to mask my annoyance. That’s old news. Ms. Marsha already taught me this during my job orientation. My LUK, thanks to the summoning bonus, had reached 8. VIT was naturally the same. Nothing groundbreaking here.
”Of course, I know.”
”…Well, even if you know, pulling it off isn’t as easy as it sounds.”
Alex grinned, his tone dripping with smugness.
So this is where his brazen confidence comes from—this belief that he’s invincible. If I play my cards right, this just became a lot easier to deal with.
Alex continued, grinning that wicked grin of his. “I won’t lose, even if I die. No idea how strong you are, but it’s smarter not to cross me, got it?”
Oh, I got it, alright. So his strength comes from focused stat optimization—he’s a min-maxer. Which means his other abilities are probably garbage. He really thinks no one will challenge him because of this, huh? The advantage is mine now.
But just as I thought it through, Alex’s sneaky scouting skill activates again. I purposely let this one slip by.
And he took the bait.
”Huh!”
Alex slammed his hands on the table, shooting to his feet. His face flushed a deep, angry red.
”You brat! You’ve been mocking me this whole time, haven’t you?! A level 4 loser thinks they can challenge me?!”
Just as I expected. He’s dumber than I thought. Collaboration? Out the window.
”You’re so weak you’re not even fit to be a lackey! Hiding out because you know you’ll lose—how pathetic. I’ll put you out of your misery. I’ll make good use of your equipment and your doll. Just die already!”
His tone turned to venom, venom gave way to rage, and rage bloomed into murderous intent. Mana began pooling in his right hand. He was gearing up to fire a magic arrow, but his recklessness screamed amateur. Maybe that’s how he killed the wild fox too.
I breathed in deeply, redirecting the anger bubbling inside me into a sharp, focused calm. A fight was inevitable now, and the prospect thrilled me far more than it should. Hate him? Yes. But the primal instinct to fight—to kill—it sings in every human soul. Maybe Alex and I aren’t as different as I’d like to think.
But difference or not, this fight is mine to win.
While Alex roared his threats, my Spiral Gun was already locked and loaded. We both knew—the one who strikes first wins. And unlike Alex, I was fully prepared to make that move.
This is it.
I’m taking him down.
