Volume 3 Chapter 11-2 The Side Story of the Village Butcher – Part II
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Usually, you gotta sell stuff only inside the prices the guild says, but nobles often don’t follow rules.
If they haggle too much, even nobles get hit with guild penalties, but when they pay more like this time, you can’t really complain.
If this keeps going, the meat guild will have no choice but to rethink prices, but with sketchy supply like quail, a few nobles paying big bucks just makes crazy expensive stuff pop up.
It’s a pain for the meat guild, but for Nora, who has to write the reports for the guild, it’s a nightmare.
If the deals keep happening steady, the hassle’s worth it, but these moody nobles might never want quail again.
”Wholesale price for a whole bird’s one common gold coin. Below that and I ain’t selling next time.”
”Pretty cocky, huh? But if the sale price is 3 common gold coins, that sounds fair. Also, I’ll ask to bump up what we pay hunters too.”
”No need. If hunters get big money, they’ll just slack off.”
Chaa thinks Hero hunts quail ’cause he’s broke.
Usually, Heroes wear shiny armor and swords.
Chaa imagines that kid’s just an apprentice, hunting quail to save up for a sword.
If he gets too much money, he might buy a weapon and take off somewhere.
That’d be bad.
”Looks like a lazy hunter. Is he your underling?”
”He’s like my little brother. Whoa, can’t say more than that to you.”
Hero hunting quail is Chaa’s important money source, so he doesn’t want smart Nora knowing too much.
”Thanks. Looks like luck’s finally on your side. Make the most of it.”
Nora kinda already guesses what’s up, but she’s not gonna steal Chaa’s cut to make more profit.
She even hopes this might help the disappointing childhood friend finally grow up.
Besides, dealing with hunters is a real pain.
Quail’s not stable stock, and keeping Chaa in the middle is smartest for business anyway.
Quail meat is very expensive, even for meat.
It’s a big risk to have it in stock.
Nora doesn’t want to sell it to other towns.
The Guild sets the wholesale price, so she doesn’t make much money selling it.
She has them arrange the transport, but if the meat rots at her shop, it’s all her loss.
It’s a burden because of the risk of keeping it in stock.
She does it because they help each other out.
Nora knows that even if she sells it at a loss, they don’t thank her.
Some people even complain, saying she gave them old meat.
Even if she helps them a lot, they rarely help her back.
She has to cut them off at some point, or she’ll go down with them.
She sells meat to Chaa because they’re childhood friends, but the servants don’t like Chaa’s freeloading. She knows Chaa will be finished if she cuts him off.
If the meat shop in Toyata village goes bankrupt, those people will come to Nora’s shop to buy meat.
The meat guild won’t be happy, but they probably won’t let a new butcher open in that remote village.
But Chaa helped her with the quail this time.
If he has his own way to get the meat, then Chaa can finally be a real butcher.
She doesn’t have to take care of him anymore.
Nora’s merchant senses tell her the quail meat will cause trouble.
She decides to let Chaa deal with all the good and bad things about the quail.
From now on, he’s going to be a man, not I’mChaa’s mother.
”If I get rich, will you marry me?”
Chaa saw himself making a lot of money with the quail.
He’ll make one gold coin every day.
No, he could hunt more than just one bird.
Chaa knows Nora likes money more than love words.
Nora looks at her childhood friend with a “here we go again” face.
She doesn’t mind being flirted with, but she doesn’t like men who are too pushy.
Chaa’s problem is that he gets carried away with his fantasies.
From Nora’s point of view, Chaa’s just a wild brat who causes trouble, so he was never a romantic option to begin with.
”You’re not all bad, just a little bit, you know. If you get rich, some girl might even marry you. But first, you gotta know your place and stop dreaming too high.”
He’s a guy of marriage age who at least owns his own shop.
If he’s not picky, there’s people out there for him.
Sometimes, useless guys settle down and clean up their act.
Maybe if he gets a strong wife bossing him around, his crazy daydreams will finally stop.
”Lately you say you know your place, but isn’t that just you settling for me?”
Chaa honestly said what he felt, but of course that just pissed Nora off big time.
