Volume 5 Chapter 16-2 Duke’s Daughter
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Because if you’re level 5 or higher, you may be conscripted in case of emergency, so not many people level beyond that. Most people don’t want to join the military.
Luckily, Heroes are not conscripted into the army. In case of emergency, they are instructed to act according to the Hero Management Bureau. So it’s okay to level up without worries.
* * *
By the way, nobles with titles are not conscripted because they hold command positions. Since the military is organized by territory, the overall commander of Duke Mineley’s territory army is Duke Mineley himself.
Tizzy has easily surpassed level 10, probably around level 20.
”Don’t go too far. There was something like a ghost just now.”
Tizzy reacts sharply to the word ‘ghost’ and makes a gesture of reaching for the sword at her waist. Naturally, there is no sword there since she’s unarmed.
Embarrassed by the unexpected miss, she performs a strange dance. It’s quite cute, so I make sure to record it properly with my editor skill.
It’s interesting, so I replay it many times in my mind. While an accidental miss is embarrassing, her movements are surprisingly smooth and practiced. She’s definitely battle-hardened.
In this world, women usually don’t fight. If men die in battles, the country can rebuild, but if women disappear, the next generation will become extinct. However, there are some female warriors. They often appear in stories, and I occasionally see women armed with swords even in the royal capital. Come to think of it, the leader of the knights who arrested me in Toyota Village was also a woman.
”Ghosts don’t exist. You were just teasing me.”
Tizzy bites back at me. Perhaps to hide her embarrassment from the dance, she’s become much more casual with her words in a short time. Well, it’s a hundred times better than the boastful chatter just a moment ago.
”No, they do exist. Turn off the light and look into the woods over there.”
When I point, she hesitantly disables the magic light.
On such occasions, the ghostly fire doesn’t appear. Please, show up already. This is making it look like I’m lying.
I can feel Tizzy’s aura of anger. If a woman’s level is high enough, even her slender arms can exert monstrous strength, ignoring the existence of muscles. In a melee, I wouldn’t stand a chance.
”Ah, beautiful.”
Suddenly, Tizzy lets out a girlish voice. The pale ghost passing through the forest is clearly visible. Look, there it is after all. Scary things are scary, but I’m grateful to the ghost.
”That might be the ghost of a migratory bird. I’ve heard the story before, but this is the first time I’ve seen one.”
Ghosts appear one after another, slipping through the treetops and disappearing into the sky. Before I know it, the sky is filled with an unsettling number of stars. The air must be exceptionally clear today; it might get quite cold due to radiative cooling tonight.
”A bird’s ghost?”
”During winter, birds that died don’t realize they’re dead, and when spring comes, only their souls return to their homeland. It just happens to be that day today.”
Hmm, is it like a ghost story? Or rather, it’s a mysterious tale. When put that way, the way the ghosts flicker doesn’t look unlike a bird’s fluttering.
”Are ghosts safe?”
”I think they’re just pitiful, but what do you think? Isn’t it bad if there are too many? After all, it means that many migratory birds died that year.”
It seems they’re not dangerous. They don’t seem to bear any grudges, and I don’t think they’ll haunt people.
”I see, I thought it might be a will-o’-the-wisp or something.”
A will-o’-the-wisp is a Western ghost. In fantasy games, they often appear as entry-level spirit-type monsters.
Spirit-type monsters are known to be unaffected by physical attacks, and as they rank up, they may possess unpleasant special attacks like strong status ailments or drains that players dislike. Many types of attacks other than their weakness attribute are ineffective, and even strong players can get stuck if they don’t have the means to attack.
I’d rather not have this series of monsters in this world, but unfortunately, they’ve been properly confirmed. It seems that even super Advanced monsters like Wights and Specters are well-accounted for. Since these are monsters with limited spawning locations, there’s no particular problem if they’re not exterminated. It’s recommended to leave them be, and it seems like no one gets close.
Adventurers in this world do not take many risks.
”Do you call the ghost of a bird a Will-O’-Wisp? Indeed, it does have a mystical sound to it, doesn’t it~desuwa?”
No, that’s not it. I didn’t mean it like that, but well, it’s fine. If Tizzy starts telling someone that name in the future, then those guys will really be called Will-O’-Wisps. The origin of names may just be like this.
Tizzy watches the pale light that appears without fail and flies away. Looking at her like this, she seems like an innocent girl of her age.
”You just laughed, didn’t you? You laughed at my appearance, didn’t you?”
”No, I just thought you seemed like a rather normal girl when I saw you like this.”
Regretfully, I realize I slipped my tongue. Treating a Duke’s daughter like a normal girl might be an insult.
”If I could really be just a normal girl, how much easier life would be. I can speak comfortably with you and Sir Shirakaba, but usually, that’s not the case. It’s quite suffocating to always have to behave as a member of the Duke’s family.”
Oh, despite her youth, she seems to be going through quite a lot. Well, there’s the hardship of being a noble, I suppose. But if she dislikes it so much, she could always abandon her status. Lowering one’s status should still be easier than the opposite, though.
In the end, she must be trying hard because she wants to remain a noble, right?
”By the way, what kind of relationship do you have with Sir Shirakaba?”
Here we go. It seems this girl and Mr. Shirakaba are lovers, even though they are both women. No, since Ms. Shirakaba was dressed as a man, did this girl think it was a heterosexual relationship? It’s all a bit complicated, but I’ll have to be careful not to cause any misunderstandings.
”Ms. Shirakaba and I are just acquaintances, and I only helped him out because it was a coincidence. The real hero who risked her life to help you was Ms. Shirakaba.”
Ms. Shirakaba seems to have her own complicated issues, but she doesn’t seem like a bad person. I hope she can try her best in many things. Even though she may not have achieved results, I think her courage in standing up to the dragon alone was admirable.
”I wrote a letter asking Sir Shirakaba to never come to my aid.”
Heh, there’s quite a bit of determination in this person, I’ve come to think a lot better of them. But they don’t understand men’s hearts; if you send such a letter, it’s obvious that she’ll come to help. No…
”So, did you become Schulz’s sacrifice on your own?”
”In a way, yes, but also no. It’s all my foolish father’s fault.”
Tizzy started speaking as if a dam had broken. She probably couldn’t help but want someone to listen to her.
