Volume 5 Chapter 17-2 Baron Gorigan’s Ambition
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Currently, Duke Mineley, who has been making blunder after blunder, has also lost the trust of his troops. If they risk their lives only to be treated poorly, it’s no wonder morale is plummeting.
Looters now infiltrate the territory brazenly in broad daylight, and even some of Baron Gorigan’s soldiers are said to be entrenched in several mines.
Isn’t this situation more serious than we imagined?
It’s a strange scenario where Duke’s army, which overwhelmingly surpasses the enemy in strength, is left powerless as a weak invader. Just because the leadership is incompetent, things can deteriorate this badly.
* * *
”Baron Gorigan has taken up residence in an important mine without permission and started spouting nonsense, claiming it was originally their territory.”
”All invaders say that.”
Military invasions of other countries have been prohibited by the Anti-Demon Alliance until now, but it’s becoming increasingly uncertain how that will hold up in the future.
Is Duke Mineley over sixty? Maybe he’s just an old man too rigid to adapt to the changing times.
”My father is an old fool~desuwa. He even started babbling nonsense like offering me as Gorigan’s wife.”
He seems to think that if Gorigan’s occupied mine is handed over as a dowry, his noble reputation would be maintained. Honestly, what is he thinking?
Frustrated, Tizzy stormed out of the mansion on a whim, thinking she might as well become a dragon’s sacrifice. This girl is a bit foolish too.
”Marriages between nobles of different countries require the king’s approval, or else various problems could arise.”
Political marriages among nobles aren’t unusual, but when it involves foreign nobles, territorial issues come into play. Even before Miss Floria taught me, I had an idea about that much.
”Father said we should get post-approval from His Majesty.”
”It’s no good after the fact. Listen, a child will be born between you and Baron Gorigan.”
”To think I’d have a child with such a hideous man… Ugh, it’s horrible. Who would have children with him?”
She probably dislikes the Baron just because he’s ugly, right?
Thinking about it, invaders aren’t necessarily evil. Considering Duke Mineley’s incompetence, it might be better to be governed by Baron Gorigan.
Well, to young girls, ugliness alone might be considered evil.
”No, you don’t really have to give birth. Just prepare a suitable baby.”
The fact that Tizzy married into the Gorigan family is all that matters. Finding a suitable baby and raising them as someone descended from Duke Mineley’s blood is no problem. If the raised child doesn’t know the secret of their birth, falsely claiming authenticity is easy.
”A substitute baby, huh? And I’m going to be killed, huh?”
Realizing what this means, Tizzy gasps.
”Whether you’ll be killed or not… you’ll probably be confined. And the Duke and your older brother will meet mysterious deaths.”
There are professional assassination groups in this world; anyone can be killed if they just have enough money. There are poisons that will surely lead to death if taken.
”If my father and older brother die, it will lead to a fight for succession. Well, it’s trouble. If Gorigan forcibly installs someone claiming to be ‘my’ child, it will become an international problem.”
Most wars in this world are family disputes; the legitimacy of the ruling bloodline becomes the justification. I think it’s ridiculous, but at the same time, the importance of political marriages helps to some extent to keep the scale of wars in check.
Duke Mineley’s house, the Vespal royal family, and Baron Gorigan’s family—if you trace their ancestors, they all seem to be distant relatives.
Maybe Duke Mineley originally intended to bring in the strength of the Vespal family from the start. Otherwise, everything they do is just too foolish.
”My father is foolish, but my brother is even more so. The commoners held a faint hope that a talented son-in-law would come, but…”
Mr. Raoh mentioned that Duke Mineley has several daughters of the appropriate age besides Tizzy, but according to Tizzy, they recently died of mysterious illnesses one after another. That story seems suspicious too—way too suspicious.
”I’ve decided. If you become my husband and the next Duke, Duke Mineley’s territory will be secure~desuwa.”
”Uh—”
Suddenly, a bombshell dropped. Hey, wasn’t Shirakaba the one you liked?
”The reward for a hero who rescues a maiden from a dragon has long been established as the maiden herself. It will gather enthusiastic support from the villagers.”
Well, people in this world love fairy tales. It’s certainly an effective method to gain popularity, but…
”If Sir Hero, who commands Schulz, becomes the next Duke, then they won’t be able to voice opinions to the cowardly father and brother.”
No, please, give me a break.
”No, see. You have Shirakaba, after all.”
Tizzy seems to be a better person than I thought, and her appearance is also quite beautiful, somewhat resembling Ms. Nina. I might become good friends with her personally.
But marrying into the Duke family? That’s not a joke. I’ll leave the noble princess to Shirakaba and quickly make my escape.
”You understand the relationship between me and Shirakaba too, don’t you? I think we’ll get along well. That’s right—if Shirakaba becomes your concubine, we can stay together forever.”
No, Shirakaba is Japanese, and I think she would dislike a triple marriage. I myself refuse to be a dummy role in a sham marriage.
”Of course, I’ll give birth to your heir. I think I’ll quite like you too. And you can take as many concubines as you like. As a Duke, having multiple wives isn’t surprising.”
Talking about childbirth so suddenly is way too raw. This girl has no experience with men, yet she speaks so bluntly.
And I’ve had enough of harems. I’ve enjoyed it enough. Living surrounded by seven wives in the Valley of Trials was, in a way, the ultimate harem. The wives loved me purely, without jealousy toward each other.
There were no troublesome relatives either. In this world, I can’t imagine a more ideal harem.
”Sorry, but I’m not interested in harems.”
”Well, that sounds wonderful. In that case, let’s build a perfect family like commoners—just the three of us. I’m not completely uninterested in gentlemen, you know. A child between you and Shirakaba would surely be very cute. I think I could love them just as much as my own child.”
This guy isn’t listening to me at all. What the hell is a perfect family with three people?
