Volume 6 Chapter 14-2 The Eye Of The Cyclops

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

The botanical garden had something that looked like white marble. It had patterns like terrain, so it might be original. But it was outside and badly worn. I didn’t know it was a planetarium, so I just stared at it. The bumps looked like mountains and rivers, but also like flesh and blood vessels. It wasn’t colored, and I thought it was a monster’s eyeball, so it seemed biological.

Schulz’s item is definitely a real original made by divine beings. I didn’t check closely, but it must be like new even after all this time. His collection is incredibly valuable.

The problem is, he thinks it’s worthless junk. Until Mr. Gino told me, I thought the Eye of the Cyclops was junk too. He keeps it in his vault, so it should be okay, but I’ll remind him to take care of it next time we meet.

While thinking about this, we were nearing the Valley of Trials.

Ms. Uruu’s muscles looked great as she ran ahead. Her long, grayish fur shone brightly. She hadn’t been shampooed, but she looked clean—probably magic.

People say tigers can run a thousand miles a day, but that’s not true. Wolves are the real long-distance runners. They chase prey until it’s too tired to run.

But they don’t like long fights. If they can take down prey quickly, that’s better. Ms. Uruu finishes things fast, like a cat. She’s good at hunting rabbits, but rabbits dig burrows and hide quickly. Catching them without giving them a chance is really hard.

In this world, there are big carnivorous rabbits that eat regular rabbits. Ms. Uruu hunts the big ones, while foxes hunt the regular ones. I thought carnivorous rabbits were scary, but regular rabbits eat small animals too. The big rabbits also eat wall barley, so they’re like carnivorous omnivores.

You can probably talk to rabbits. I thought all animals here were friends, but that’s not true. I’ve eaten rabbit meat. Foxes and wolves serve the Beast God, so they don’t fight each other. They’re kind of like domesticated. The Beast God heals them, sets resurrection points, and teaches them stuff.

Can Ms. Uruu turn into a human? Foxes use illusion magic to transform, so it shouldn’t be too hard for her.

Lately, summoned heroes have been hunting wolves a lot. Mr. Escalion handles it well, but I’m worried because the Hero Management Bureau is summoning rough heroes now.

Maybe she read my mind, because Ms. Uruu glared at me sharply. It was like she was saying she doesn’t need tricks because she’s strong. Even against Mr. Escalion, she’d be evenly matched in the forest. Against regular soldiers, she’d win easily even if surrounded.

But summoned hero parties are tough. They’re strong individually, and Japanese players are great at working together. If they get serious, even Uno and Schulz might be in danger.

I’ve heard about the “3 times attack” rule, but I think it’s false. Attackers can plan and choose their timing, while defenders have to react. Like in tower defense games, defenders can only use terrain and traps, but attackers come to crush them. They gather info first, then attack when they’re sure to win.

The Valley of Trials’ final boss dragon is weaker than a real one, but a party of 4 always beats it. Without the 4-member limit, even a real dragon would lose to numbers, like Ms. Ant proved.

There are hundreds of high-level heroes in the royal capital. If they work together, they’re unstoppable. They usually argue, but if something happens, they might unite.

So, learning transformation magic would be better. As a wolf, she’ll be hunted, but as a human, she can negotiate.

Since I can use Mind Communication, I can learn illusion skills easily. Illusions can do more than just transform; I could make clones too. I’d say, “That’s a clone while I attack.” But I should focus on attacking or escaping instead of talking.

I mean, fighting when attacked is bad. It’s better to talk things out, but if you have to fight, escape first, prepare, then counterattack. Heroes are surprisingly weak if you take them one by one. I’m used to hunting monsters in games, but they’ve never been hunted. If a wolf stronger than me targeted me, I’d give up in 3 days.

The big thing is not to make everyone hate us. If we say we’re only fighting back against people who attack us, most folks should just stay out of it.

Ms. Uruu seemed to think about it, and she started listening to me. But she really doesn’t want to give up the forest. If bad guys mess it up, it’ll be covered in wall barley and that’s it.

In the end, the wolves just fight fire with fire. If they lose, they’ll die right there in the forest. They say there’s no point in trying to survive if it means doing tricky stuff.

Maybe that’s just how they live. If there’s a fight, I’ll try to help them. I’m no good at fighting, so I’ll just spread the word about how good the wolves are.

The troublemaker Heroes are already hated by everyone in the capital and the other Heroes, so I don’t need to say bad things about them.

The Wolf Forest helped fight the Demonfolk before, so they’re good allies. I could ask Shea-Shea to write a popular story about the wolves being heroes. It’s weird how many people don’t know about it, even though it’s true. Telling more people might stop some fights.

But something still feels weird in my head. It feels like the troublemaker Heroes are causing problems for the Wolf Forest too. Are they really bad guys? Even if they are, the Hero Bureau is the one bringing them here. They stopped giving out those Puppet Princesses and now they’re bringing in tons of Heroes every day without spending much.

There’s no sign of the Demon King anywhere, so why bring in so many Heroes? What’s the point?
