Volume 6 Chapter 78 Farewell, Moon Of Earth

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

I watched the big harvest moon of mid-autumn and decided it was time to return to my other world. It wasn’t just because I felt proud or drunk—it was for a real reason.

Thanks to Mr. Kondou’s help and strength, I found out early about the raid on the Administration Bureau’s main building. People who learned about it the day before panicked, trying to hide what they had done. In that chaos, I managed to grab a lot of things. Honestly, they probably don’t even know what’s missing, because they destroyed many important items themselves.

The Administration Bureau was clever. They kept many versions of teleport magic formulas secret. Having the records of how they used those spells helped me analyze things much faster.

Why this connection exists, I don’t know. But there’s a clear link between how well summoning works and Earth’s moon phases. Maybe it has to do with gravity or something like that. On the fifteenth day of the old lunar calendar—the night of the Mid-Autumn Moon—there are no records of failure. It might be a coincidence, but to someone like me, who grabs onto every clue, this was important information.

I still have many things to do in Japan—probably forever. If I miss tonight, I’d have to wait a whole year. So it was a perfect chance to make a big move. I pushed myself hard, trying to finish everything on time.

I chose to leave from the big magic formation set up at the castle ruins. Compared to the small ones used for forced returns, this one’s power was totally different—like night and day. It’s like comparing the moon to a snail, or a smartphone to an old Aegis ship. Still, traveling to another world is never guaranteed. It’s a risky trip.

The original magic barrier meant to keep people away is still active. Anyone without a protective charm can’t get near the mountain. Today, some students who came for a dare had their cars turn back at the mountain’s base. There are many famous haunted spots near Lake Biwa, so I hope they had fun.

The teleport magic formation uses mana drawn from special spiritual veins—separate from the barrier—and stores it in magic stones. It takes a while to recharge, but running it once a month is okay.

Most of the structures are underground, so from above, the mountain looks normal and quiet. Brother Jirou helped build the site quickly using an excavator, and he was jealous of my magic bag. I think I did a pretty good job. It might break if a big earthquake hits, but natural disasters are out of anyone’s control.

The new house next to the magic site is where my uncle lives so I can focus on keeping everything working. It’s actually an old folk house moved here in a rush.

Great-Aunt took care of the house before. It was over a hundred years old and falling apart since no one lived there, so it sat empty. Because of that, I got it for free.

When moving it, I fixed the broken roof and put up solar panels. I also dug a well, so water and electricity are self-supplied. If I want gas, I just have to lift a propane cylinder and ask someone to bring it. Uncle will probably take care of that himself.

Uncle’s new wife is smart and seems happy living in the mountains with him. The cell signal is good, and it’s only a few minutes’ drive to the main road. I thought it would be hard for their kids to go to school two kilometers away, but I hear that’s normal here.

Today is the day I say goodbye to Japan. Officially, it’s a farewell party for Uncle’s move, and many people came to see me off. I invited Mr. Kondou and Fubuki too. I told Fubuki about summoning to another world. Since anime and manga about other worlds are popular, it was easy to explain.

We agreed not to tell my parents. They couldn’t keep it secret, and I doubt they could handle the truth.

Fubuki is handsome, so Chiho is excited and ignoring her own brother who’s leaving today.

I didn’t tell Chiho or Mom how dangerous teleporting is, so they think I’m just going abroad for a trip. If they knew, they’d never let me go.

At home, once Mom decides something, no one argues. It was tough just to get her to accept me dropping out of high school. Brother Ichirou convinced her by saying I have enough money and treasures—more than pro athletes earn—so I won’t starve.

Trying to impress Fubuki, Chiho suddenly decided to cook, which is rare for her. Thanks to that, our last meal was curry.

It’s a safe choice—hard to mess up and great for feeding many people.

”I think adding soy sauce as a secret ingredient is good,” Brother Ichirou said, trying to give advice.

”No, the secret to curry is Tabasco,” said Brother Jirou, who loves spicy food. He puts Tabasco on everything. I was shocked when he even tried it on sashimi, but surprisingly, it goes well with seafood.

”Use noodle soy sauce. The key to tasty soba curry udon at a soba shop is noodle soy sauce,” Uncle bragged, unable to hold back. He seems calmer after getting married, but old habits die hard.

Fubuki looked at Uncle with a strange look, maybe sensing his useless old man vibe. He’s been through his own troubles, after all.

”Um, Mr. Fubuki, do you add secret ingredients to curry?” Chiho asked in a soft kitten-like voice. I’ve never heard her talk like that before. Even the brothers looked stunned.

Fubuki honestly said he’s troubled by how much the girls spoil him. Usually, that would be annoying, but with someone as handsome as him, you almost understand. His love life must be complicated with all that attention.

”Hmm, what about grated ginger?” he answered seriously. Ginger is an interesting idea. Maybe instead of mixing it into the roux, it would be better as a topping.

”Dad says mustard might be nice too,” Dad interrupted between him and Fubuki. Chiho is really popular.

Everyone came to see me off, but compared to my sister, I feel so plain.

”Alright, I’ll try putting a little of everything,” Chiho said.

That’s a typical cooking mistake for amateurs, but with curry, unless you ruin the balance completely, it should be okay.

* * *

I’m stuck, bored and restless. There are hours left and so many things I want to say, but my mind is blank. No words come.

 ”Oh, the moon showed up.”

Maybe tonight’s moon is special; it looks bigger and brighter. But that’s impossible, so it’s just my imagination.

I planned to start teleportation when the moon reaches its highest point. I can still cancel if I want. If I stop now, I might never get the courage again.

Courage and fear feel alike, but I can’t tell them apart. My mind isn’t calm. I’m not normal right now.

Did astronauts on the moon rocket feel like this before launch? It’s not fear of dying, but the feeling that this world is irreplaceable.

”It’s rude, but sitting on the porch watching the moon while eating curry feels kind of fancy,” Dad said, sitting beside me. We silently ate Chiho’s spicy curry. Tears started welling up in my eyes. No one said meaningful goodbye words—just quiet eating. Not as dramatic as you’d expect.

”Moonlight… old man…” Uncle started singing off-key, ignoring the mood, but his wife nudged him and he stopped halfway.

The insects around us sang loudly for autumn. Bright moonlight poured from the clear sky. I really love this world.

”Maybe that’s the moon rising over Mount Mikasa,” I thought.

A song about missing home from a faraway land echoed inside me. From another world, I can’t see Earth’s moon.

”Mount Mikasa is in Nara Prefecture, you know?” Uncle said awkwardly. With him, any sad moment turns into a joke.

”Copying isn’t good, Brother Sab,” Chiho teased. She doesn’t get it either.

The moon rose steadily. I could see it move clearly. Has time sped up?

Time never stops. This moment will come for sure.

 ”It’s time… I’m going.”

”Take care,” Dad said quietly. His words were short, but full of feelings I don’t understand yet. I don’t have enough life experience or even Mind Communication skill to know everything he means.

Still, tears fell from my eyes. I looked up at the moon and pretended I was fine.

Under the moonlight, I walked alone to the empty field where I set up the magic formation. The magic targets only me, so even if Uncle rushes in, no one else gets hurt.

”Eat well! No matter where you go, don’t forget to eat,” Mom shouted, rushing over at the last moment. She never looked happy about me going to another world, but I know it’s because she cares.

”Thanks for… giving birth to me,” I said softly.

”What are you saying, you dummy?” Mom answered.

I stared at her face, trying to remember it deeply. I have photos and videos, but this is different.

I heard soldiers say they call out their mother’s name last before dying. It sounds like a superstition, but I don’t want that to happen to me.

The magic formation’s light floated beautifully over the empty field. It should be floating—I just couldn’t see it myself. It activates and teleports at the same time—that’s how strong it is.

It felt like falling into a dark well or being shot into the sky. In a place where up and down don’t mean anything, I moved forward.

In the dark, I saw the wall of the world I feared—countless black spheres floating. They looked darker than the dark around them. What does it mean to see things in a world without light?

Those spheres are probably nothingness. This place is a space of pure idea.

Luckily, the spheres had shrunk small. That means there were wider, safer gaps. Maybe it’s because of the full moon? Thanks to that, my chance to survive is higher. But since I’m just drifting, I’m counting on luck.

If only I could move freely here. Wait, what’s wrong with my body? My hands and feet don’t exist. I realized—this is dangerous. If I lose my mind now, I can’t go back. I would really die.

I can’t breathe, but I feel like I’m drowning. I’ve felt this before, maybe at the Valley of Trials. So, I’m used to it.

I think I can get through this. I just have to keep trying.

While fighting to stay sane, I somehow slipped through the void spheres without noticing. Maybe spreading out my ego lets me avoid hitting the nothingness.

I don’t know much. So many things confuse me. The person who made this teleport magic is amazing.

For now, I passed the danger. All that’s left is to pray I arrive safely.

The new world I approach is where gods truly live, so their power might be stronger.

Do humans believe because gods exist? Or do gods exist because humans believe? What price do I pay to these gods? A shrine? Offerings? Rituals? None of these feel quite right.

But somehow, I think I can find the answer now. Is this enlightenment? I’ll probably forget it all once I’m back in my body.

The light wrapped me once more. Ah, I fell into the other world again.

* * *

I feel the ground hard beneath my back. Strength flows through me.

Phew, the teleport worked. I should feel happy, but instead, there’s this empty feeling like waking up from a dream.

Right, my memories. I need to write this down before they slip away.

I remember Ms. Nina… and my mother? Japan still feels sharp in my mind. But I can’t relax. If I think too much about other things, my memories might vanish again.

Fighting the teleport sickness, I hurriedly jot notes in my notebook. Maybe I should make a checklist next time, just in case.

It feels like I got my memories of this world back. When I was still in Japan, everything was hazy, like thick fog. But now, it’s clear.

My memories of Japan have sharpened too—more than when I was summoned before.

I’m sure the Hero summoning messes with our memories. That’s something I can’t forgive.

* * *

Looking around again, this place looks like a lost ruin deep in a jungle. But the magic circle on the ground is in perfect shape, protected by a barrier.

This must be a relic from an old super-advanced civilization, something the management bureau doesn’t know about. It’s far from the imperial capital where Ms. Nina waits, at the continent’s west edge. Still, there’s a dwarf teleport gate nearby, so I’m fine.

The star globe the dwarf king gave me has a code carved in it. It’s an artifact from that ancient civilization, copied perfectly.

The craftsman who made it recorded the summoning magic circle’s label without any mistakes. That’s a huge help.

The summoning spell can take you anywhere, just by changing the label.

That ancient civilization must have traveled between Earth and their world way more often than we do now.

The dwarf’s teleport gate is less than a kilometer ahead. It’s like riding from Narita Airport to the Skyliner train.

Maybe there used to be hotels and shops here, but now they’re swallowed by the jungle.

I push through roots wrapped around the ruins and reach the teleport gate. From here, I can jump straight to the dwarf kingdom, the Wolf Forest, or my castle.

Just as I’m about to step into the gate, a strange bad feeling stops me. Something’s off. I can’t panic now.

I sit down and breathe deep.

There’s a strange mana flow anomaly. I know magic tools can go wrong, and when they break halfway, that’s the worst.

Usually, magic tools just shut off when something’s wrong, but sometimes they freak out. Maybe it’s a problem with Ella—maybe the creator wasn’t careful.

Can I fix it? Depends on the damage, but I think so. Still, if I fail, I could break it completely.

I don’t know if I’ll get permission, but I have to ask the dwarf king first. If this gate’s broken, I can’t visit him at all… I wish I had a phone or something.

Maybe I should give up and head to the closest teleport gate instead. I take out a celestial globe shaped like an eyeball and check the map.

The nearest gate is over a hundred kilometers away. Riding there could take hours—if roads even exist.

Through the jungle and unknown paths, it could be days.

But that’s okay. I have plenty of food and water. My Astronomy skill means I won’t get lost. If monsters come, I can just sneak past with Stealth.

Meeting Ms. Nina will wait a little longer, but rushing only causes mistakes.

After all this, panicking now would ruin everything.

* * *

The green around the ruins is bright. It’s hot, but not too wet—this isn’t a true rainforest.

The huge trees dig deep roots to drink underground water. Is this a dry area? If the forest dies, it might turn to desert.

Also, I don’t see any wall barley here.

Since water is safe, avoiding streams might mean fewer wild animals.

Camping at night? No, I’ll keep moving overnight. Fatigue can wait. I’ll use the Dragon God’s Herb to heal soon.

The ancient ruins are like a maze. Thanks to my skill, I don’t get lost, but I have to go around giant roots and broken stone walls.

There are still many active barriers and traps. This is harder than a simple dungeon.

Just getting out of the ruins is tough. I planned to use the dwarf’s teleport gate, so this is a surprise.

At least there are no monsters popping up like a real dungeon.

But there are natural dangers. No big predators, but some plant-eaters can be a problem.

Poison hair ants don’t care about my Stealth skill. Touch them, and you get hurt bad.

Still, with Radar Scan, I can see the ants coming. Thorny plants hiding sharp spikes are annoying too.

With maxed Stealth skill, I thought I was untouchable, but I was wrong.

I pick some thorny vines, like barbed wire, the same kind that gave me trouble. They’re a rival, but maybe useful for traps or security.

There are no treasure chests here, but the old paintings and carvings on broken walls are treasures of their own. They don’t do much, but I’ll save them with Editor Skill anyway.

Adventurers usually destroy things like these when bored, so only untouched ruins keep them.

Late afternoon, I’m glad to leave the ruin zone. Maybe I relaxed too much.

 Suddenly, I’m surrounded by giants.

Radar Scan missed them because they use Stealth skill but don’t blend into trees like others.

The AI skill sometimes finds ways around other skills.

Luckily, they don’t fully know I’m here yet. I max Stealth skill and hold my breath.

The closest giant is a tall, beautiful woman. Even so, everything about her is huge! Her strong, tanned body looks like an athlete’s and stands over two meters tall.

Among the men behind her, some are over three meters.

Are they giants? Ogres? The ones in the Schulz Collection are about this size.

Ogres are small among giants, but still huge.

They seem to be hunting. Everyone carries stone axes. Their fur is decorated with metal bits, making them look wild and cool.

They all wear special eye patches. The patches are detailed and probably have a ceremonial meaning.

Hm? Maybe these ruins are sacred to them, and they came here for a ritual.

If I disturb their sacred place, it might be more than just a fight.

The beautiful woman comes closer, sniffing and scrunching her nose. My skill should block her smell.

 But I feel danger.

She takes off her eye patch and stares with her red and green eyes—odd eyes. She’s pretty, so it’s kind of cool.

Suddenly, a strong force grabs me, and before I can react, I’m lifted up like a kitten.

What just happened? It was so fast I barely saw it! Who said giants are slow?

”This man is my prey!” she said, trying to hold me gently like a pet.

But I’m stuck, squeezed like a giant snake wrapped around me.

Is this bad? She’s not trying to kill me yet, but with that strength, one mistake could end me.

When I was a kid, I held a chick I bought at a festival, and it died. My gentle hands were too much.

I forgot about that, but sorry, little chick. Maybe this is karma.

Being sent to another world and facing this right away—maybe teleporting to a remote place was a bad idea.

In games, weak enemies near the demon king are often stronger than early bosses.

Since we understand each other’s language, maybe I can talk this out.

I should have used the capital’s summoning magic circle. The Hero Management Bureau’s guards have better options than unknown giants.

That magic eye stopping stealth? Probably.

Yeah, it has to be. Only summoned heroes would get special cheats.

I wanted to take it slow and be careful, but everything backfires. I’m always like this.

Maybe I should have stayed safe and easy in Japan.

No, that’s not right. The rules are different here. Surviving in any world is hard. There’s no easy mode.

Don’t be scared. Overcoming hard things is what life is for.

I can still do this. Weak me, scared me—but also the part that’s excited for this new adventure.

It’s all about how you look at it. When trouble comes, find the good side.

I’m glad I caught the attention of a beautiful woman instead of a rough giant.

Women have softer bodies, even if strong. I’m relieved I won’t get crushed by muscles.

Their smell isn’t bad either. Actually, maybe it’s a kind of pheromone?

I brought fabrics and jewelry that women like, so that’s good for gifts. I planned to get dwarves drunk with food and drinks.

With all this, I can try to make a deal.

Am I going to be a top negotiator? I’ll become a master of talks!
