Chapter 248 A Most Radiant Light
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
On that day, the residents of the royal capital Canarias² in the Canaria Kingdom¹ looked up to see a pillar of white light rising from the royal palace. With the dragon’s attack still fresh in their memories, the sight was terrifying to a populace already trembling at the threat of a “Stampede”³.
”Good gods, what is that? Are the Angels-sama finally descending from the heavens?” one resident asked.
”No, it looked like it shot straight out from the palace,” another replied.
The nameless citizens talked amongst themselves about the white light. There were no rain clouds to suggest lightning; the sky above was a pristine blue. The light itself continued to rise in a strangely viscous, syrupy manner, and many witnessed it stretching upward until it finally pierced the clouds.

”Hey, hey, what’s going on here?”
”Who knows? If something’s actually happening, the Guild will put out a request,” a man answered.
”Hey, Marm-chan! Do you know what that is?”
”I-I don’t know! I’ll check right away! Guild Master! Guild Master-” Marm-chan cried.
At the Adventurer’s Guild⁴, the A-Rank adventurers Abram “Iron Fist” and Balliston “Deadly Poison” barked questions at the receptionist, Marm-chan, but there was no way she could know. A panicked Marm-chan ran to find Guild Master Ugarte. He came rushing down from his second-floor office after seeing the light through the window, and they immediately began trying to gather information.
”What in the world is that…?”
”Sera! You mustn’t go near the window! Surely that is something evil!” Badatt shouted.
”Oh, is that so? It looks quite lovely to me…” Sera mused.
At the headquarters of the Merchant Guild Tasogare⁵, the employee Sera, the manager Badatt, and his wife Olbia had seen the light from the window while they were chatting. Badatt ran off in a panic to handle the situation, but Sera and Olbia continued to gaze out the window with wonder.
Whether Badatt or Olbia was right remained to be seen. Regardless, everyone needed information. Outside the window, the people walking the streets had also begun to panic. In every alley, private home, and storefront, the residents of the royal capital discussed the true nature of that light.
It wasn’t just the commoners who were panicking. Within the royal palace, those who had not participated in the test firing of the “Ddo-Buddy Cannon”⁷ stared at the sky in shock.
The King’s younger brother Roland and his retinue were particularly shaken. Roland-sama had been training hard at the military grounds, unable to sit idle with a national “Stampede” crisis looming so soon after the war.
”What is that…?” Roland-sama asked.
”Your Highness! Please be careful! I will have my men confirm our safety immediately!” a soldier shouted.
”Ahhh! No, Your Highness! You mustn’t! That ghastly light is surely a curse! Your Highness’s pure eyes will be defiled! You must not look!” a maid screamed.
”Eh? I mean, it made a sound unlike anything in this world, but it doesn’t look particularly evil to me…?” Roland-sama said.
”No, no, absolutely not! Oh, Roland-sama…!”
The soldiers sparring with Roland-sama were in a total frenzy. His maids were even worse, flailing their arms and legs in a desperate attempt to block his vision. One maid, who adored him as more than just the next King, tried to use the confusion as an excuse to pull him into her chest… regardless, chaos broke out everywhere within the palace.
Was it a natural phenomenon, or an act of God? Most people never even imagined it could be the work of human hands. The only ones who realized the truth were those close to Kento, the owner of the magic tool shop “Harvest”⁶.
”Master went and did it again, didn’t he…” Lily sighed.
”…Yeah. There’s likely no mistake about it,” Tania agreed.
”Honestly, wouldn’t it be more surprising if it weren’t Kento?” Laika added.
Kento’s three closest companions-the experimental slave Lily, the elven adventurer Tania, and the dog-beastman Laika-watched the sky with a complex mix of exasperation, trust, pride, and… well, mostly more exasperation.
Given his recent struggles, they wanted to praise him wholeheartedly, but they couldn’t help but wish he had handled the presentation a bit better. Still, they had reached a state of weary resignation. That’s just the way that man is.
”Ai-! Giggle, giggle!”
”Momo, you mustn’t look at that and be happy. I’m worried about your future,” Lily said.
”Au-?”
Lily gently chided her beloved daughter, who was rhythmically clapping her hands and cheering as if demanding an encore. The girl was strangely intuitive; perhaps she had sensed her father’s presence from that “thing,” but that only made Lily more concerned.
”Kento-san…?” Amelia whispered.
”Oh, what’s the matter~? ♡”
”…No, it’s nothing.”
Sister Amelia, who was heading west to deal with the “Stampede,” also sensed it from the direction of the distant capital. Since Mother Marian seemed not to notice, Amelia thought it was just her imagination. However, against her chest, the ring she had received from him-now worn as a necklace-felt glowingly warm. She didn’t know what had happened, but she knew it wasn’t anything bad. Pushed forward by that warmth, she quickened her pace toward the west.
”He actually did it… that magnificent idiot of a disciple…!!!” Pigole Kogima roared.
”Papa-, is that Kento-kun? Is it?”
”Kento-kun! Kento-kun!”
”My, my, he certainly doesn’t do things by halves, does he?” Josephine added.
Contrary to his grumbling tone, Kento’s alchemy master, Pigole Kogima, was looking up with a face full of joy. He quieted the children who were excited for some reason and listened to his wife Josephine’s carefree voice while remembering a conversation from months ago, during the height of the war.
’I’m not saying I haven’t thought about it, but our specialties are worlds apart. If it were a problem we could solve with a “Ddo-Buddy,” that would be one thing…’
’Kuku, that’s an idea. Why not just ram one up an enemy general’s backside? Or fire it like a harpoon?’
’Pffft! Hahaha! Now that would be a sight.’
It had been a joke-a ridiculous hypothetical about how to end the war. But that idiot disciple was a man who remembered his master’s words even when they were jests, and he followed them with unexpected obedience. Back when the lad was still living in the back-alley workshop, Kogima had once ranted through a drunken haze that a true craftsman should know every beast in the land, butcher them personally, and find a use for every single part. And look what the man had done…
”Kukuku… Josephine! I’m going to the palace!” Kogima shouted.
”Oh? Very well. When will you be back?”
”I don’t know! Depending on the situation, I might be gone for days! I’m leaving the house to you! After being shown something like that by my own disciple, my name as a master is ruined if I don’t get fired up!”
”Oh, my… ♡”
Josephine watched her husband as he ran off, letting out an enamored sigh. Through the cooperation of this Pigole Kogima, the “Ddo-Buddy Cannon’s” greatest flaw-the storage mechanism for the overly long barrel, commonly known as the “Erection Mechanism”⁸-would be completed, but that is a story for another time.
”O God…!”
”Oh… Ohhh…!”
The nuns of the Canarias Convent⁹ were offering prayers to the rising, viscous streak of white light. Standing stunned among them was Mailse Nina, who called herself Kento’s disciple. A man approached her slowly.
”Tell me, in the eyes of a “Purity Faction”¹⁰ member like yourself… how does that sight appear?”
”…I’m sure I don’t know what you mean. I am a devoted member of the “Saint Faction”¹¹, you know. Though, emotionally I’m “Salvation Faction”¹², and personally I’m “Inquiry Faction”¹³,” Mailse Nina replied.
”Hmph. Well, if you say so,” the man said.
Archbishop Trantestar, who was helping manage the convent in Mother Marian’s absence, muttered meaningfully and joined the nuns in prayer.
Mailse Nina continued to look up at the sight in silence. It was all too similar to legend. To be precise, the light was a bit too “messy” compared to the scrolls, but a white light that pierced the heavens could only be “The Light of God”¹⁴.
A “Holy Relic”¹⁵ from a forgotten age. A most noble light that could subdue all manner of evil. Had he-that man-truly reconstructed it? Not some “Sacred Artificer”¹⁶, but him… a suspicious, back-alley magic toolmaker?
”It seems… I really can’t afford to let him out of my sight now, can I…?”
Her murmur vanished into the air, unheard by anyone.

Summary:
A mysterious pillar of viscous white light shoots up from the royal palace, causing mass panic and religious awe throughout Canarias. Kento’s close associates and his master immediately recognize his handiwork, reacting with a mixture of pride and exasperation. Meanwhile, the light is mistaken for the legendary ‘Light of God’ by religious figures, further cementing Kento’s growing, albeit unintended, reputation.
—
Character Insight:
This chapter highlights the divergent ways Kento is perceived: a chaotic but reliable genius to his inner circle, and a potential divine figure to the religious establishment. Pigole Kogima’s reaction shows a deep paternal pride in his disciple’s ability to turn a crude joke into a world-shaking reality. Nina’s internal conflict reveals her growing obsession with Kento’s true nature as he continues to blur the lines between mundane tool-making and sacred relic reconstruction.
—
Behind the Scene:
The ‘Erection Mechanism’ is a deliberate double entendre reflecting the ‘adult goods’ theme of the series, where high-level alchemy is applied to lewd concepts. The reaction of the characters serves to build the scale of Kento’s influence before the actual mechanics of the weapon are explained.
