Chapter 86 The Vagrant’s Unexpected Wives꞉ Marriage Blitz and Guild Blessings

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

The practical declaration of my intent to have children seemed to ignite an extraordinary fervour in all the employees of the shop. They swiftly took it upon themselves to contact various parties that very day, meaning I was slated to go around and explain things starting the following morning.

Well, as it turned out, half of that effort was apparently to leave Lily and me alone together, which resulted in her quite properly making me propose to her, though I shall exercise my right to silence concerning the details of that particular event.

It was wonderful that everyone was so spirited, but it caused a slight predicament. I was to be plagued by this “predicament” everywhere I went. This began immediately at the first destination: the “Tasogare Merchant Guild,” our shop’s single most crucial trading partner.

”C-congratulations on your marriage… I certainly felt that atmosphere, but couldn’t you have at least told me?”

Sera-chan, our contact there, spoke with a voice that sounded genuinely downcast. Somehow, this sight filled me with a heavy sense of guilt.

”N-no, well, it’s not quite a marriage yet… Lily’s still a slave for ‘convenience’ because of her position or something she said…”

”I-is that so? But I heard Laika-san has been going around telling everyone that ‘Kento and Lily are becoming mates’?”

L-Laika… I certainly pictured the dog beast-person adventurer, who was practically the shop’s pet dog, and figured she might indeed be the one spreading the news. She probably meant no harm by it at all, merely stating a sort of truth as a celebratory event. For the beast-people, bearing children likely equates to being mates, and institutions like marriage are of little consequence.

”Well, yes, I suppose it’s true in a sense… I do intend to take responsibility for Tania eventually, and Laika, and Amelia too, if they wish it… Anyway, I plan to take responsibility for all the others as well…”

”P-Poligamy!? Certainly, with the recent success of ‘Harvest’ now, that might be possible… S-so, how many wives are you planning to take, approximately!?”

Sera-chan was pressing me quite vigorously, a rare sight for her. As I stammered, saying, “As many as wish it, and as my pocketbook – and lower half – can tolerate…,” a bulky, villainous-looking old man came rushing in with a great clatter. It was Badatt-shi, the manager.

”Well, well, I’ve heard the news! You’re getting married, is that it! My, you’ll need to earn a great deal now, won’t you? Supporting four or even five wives must be quite the burden! We shall, of course, provide the necessary investment!”

Badatt-shi spoke rapidly, sliding his plump body between Sera-chan and me. I couldn’t tell which was his intention. Was he protecting Sera-chan, whom he had raised like a daughter, or was he instead saying, “If you plan to touch my girl, you had better earn more”?

In any case, having secured a promise of investment from the “Tasogare Merchant Guild,” I dragged myself off to my next business partner. Little did I know, this was only the beginning of my difficulties.

The next place I visited was the ‘Hall’ at the headquarters of the “Beast-person Association.” Every direction I looked presented a paradise of animal ears: dog ears, cat ears, and many others, all gathered together. Alas, the ones surrounding me were an intimidating crowd of brawny men.

”Hah-hah-hah! As expected, it would be a waste to leave him as just a common man!”

”Here, take this farewell gift! Go on!”

”Be sure to take good care of Laika-chan and Aerith-chan!”

”A celebration, a celebration! To this brave, honorable male of males, may the blessings of the Earth and Sky be upon him!”

”What about Merluza-san, what about Merluza-san!”

Led by Chromans-shi, the chairman of the “Beast-person Association” and manager of the “Grizzly Merchant Guild,” a horde of beast-person men and young men with animal ears were slapping my back thump thump. For some reason, the male beast-people who hadn’t spoken to me much on my previous visit were now giving me a massive welcome.

As I listened while being jostled about without understanding the reason, it seemed the entire commotion was due to Laika having visited yesterday and spread the news that “Kento and Lily are becoming mates.”

That alone would have been fine, but when asked, “What about you?” Laika apparently declared, “I don’t know, but Kento is not the kind of male who would make a female cry.” I did, indeed, intend to take responsibility for her someday if she wished it…

It seemed to the beast-people, a male who takes many females as his own is to be praised as a hero. Certainly, considering their terrible ‘mating season,’ a man who takes multiple female beast-persons as wives must be a hero. Such a man—no, such a male—must be celebrated by the entire pack, or so the sentiment went.

”That’s enough, you lot! Give him a rest!”

My rescuer from the crushing crowd was Aki-nee, the tiger beast-person and my benefactor from my adventurer days. She easily lifted me out of the horde of males and led me away. Then, baring her canines, she gave a cheerful smile.

”I heard the news, Kento! You finally made up your mind, didn’t you? You make sure you make Lily and Laika happy!”

 ”Oof! Ack, y-yes…!”

Aki-nee was patting my back even harder than the males, thump thump thump. The atmosphere now made it impossible to say, “That’s not exactly it.” And it was fine, I suppose! I had always intended to do it eventually! However, one “problem” that I had put off until now came approaching nervously, its grey tail curled tight with worry.

 ”Kento-san, about that…”

It was Aerith-jou, the young lady of the “Garou Merchant Guild,” a wolf beast-person. Beside her stood her father, Ouka-shi, tears streaming down his face. The outer defences, let alone the inner ones, had been breached. It was time to pay the piper.

I was once again impressed by how useful the words from my previous world were, all the while escaping reality with the thought, Could there be a more perfect situation than this? But well, it wouldn’t be right to play dumb after getting involved with such a young lady…

”Well, our shop is still quite small, so I’m afraid I’ll cause you some hardship, but if you’re still willing…”

 ”…Yes! ¹

Aerith-jou—no, Aerith—leapt into my arms. Her grey tail was wagging so wildly it looked as though it might rip off and fly away. The atmosphere in the ‘Hall’ reached its absolute peak, and I was once again surrounded by the returning males, subjected to endless thumps and tossed into the air repeatedly.

Some time later, I was rescued by Aerith, looking like a dishrag. Ouka-shi and Chromans-shi promised me investment, saying, “Anything for our hero.”

* * *

Truthfully, I desperately wanted to go home, but I couldn’t leave until I’d visited one more place today. After telling Aerith I would contact her again, I limped my way to my old stomping ground, the Adventurer’s Guild.

”Hey, Kento, I heard the news!”

”‘Kento the Collapsed Vagrant’ actually managed to get to this point!”

”Make sure you make Lily-chan happy! …Hold on, are you alright!?”

I was greeted with the predictable reaction from the usual good-natured rabble. They ribbed me a bit, but seeing my dilapidated state, they offered me a shoulder and sat me down on a chair.

Considering the rough blessings of the beast-people just now, it was clear how refined these men were. Despite looking like they might yell “Hya-ha!” at any moment…

”Oi, Kento, I heard from Aki! You decided to marry Lily-chan, didn’t you!”

Carl, Thug C, and Aki-nee’s husband, offered me a glass of water while saying this. So, the information had spread here via Aki-nee.

”Ah, yeah. I don’t know if it’ll be in the form of marriage, but for the time being, I’ve accepted that I need to take responsibility.”

”What are you saying? You should be a bit more decisive about it!”

The thugs had a look on their faces that seemed to say, “What a hopeless fellow,” but they happily patted my shoulder and messed up my hair. What a genuinely good bunch of men they were. My greatest stroke of luck when I was teleported to this other world was being picked up by these guys.

”Anyway, I think I’ll somehow manage. It’s thanks to you guys that told me to start the magic tool shop. Thanks.”

 ”Heh-heh, quit it, would ya?”

The thugs fidgeted, blushing, and scratching under their noses. Seeing the muscular “Hya-ha” types act shy was frankly a little unsettling, but it was a good feeling to be able to give them such happy news.

Just as I was enjoying this heartwarming moment, a woman walked up to me. It was the beautiful receptionist with red hair and dark skin, Marm-san.

”K-K-Kento-kun? Is it really, r-r-really true you’re getting married!?”

”Ah, yes. Probably something like that.”

She took two or three steps back, her face a picture of shock. “Kento-kun is getting married!? Kento-kun, who used to come back barely alive after being almost killed by a single slime!? I only have married veteran adventurers or reckless newcomers around me! You were the only serious-looking ray of hope…!” she muttered to herself.

It seemed that the receptionist, a figurative oasis for the adventurers’ hearts and a highly coveted profession, had her own complex feelings.

”Hey, Marm-chan, cheer up! This guy is apparently marrying the ‘Mad Dog’ as well! You might even have a chance too, a slim chance!”

Abram “Iron Fist,” Thug A, had to go and say something unnecessary. It seemed the rumour about “Mad Dog,” Laika, had already reached this far.

”No, wait, wait, the thing is, I didn’t actually come here today to report that…”

The conversation was veering into a strange direction, so I tried to head towards my original goal: asking the Guild Master for investment. But before I could stand up, Guild Master Ulgarte-shi appeared, his footsteps thump thump echoing from the second floor. Spotting me, he shouted in a loud voice.

”Oi, Kento!!! Is it true you’re taking ‘Mad Dog’ and ‘Divine Bow’ as your wives!? You bastard, taking the highest combat power our Guild boasts!!!”

Ulgarte-shi threw a bombshell. I could understand Laika, but how on earth did the news about Tania, the elven adventurer known as “Divine Bow,” get out…? Just when I was feeling all warm and fuzzy, it looked like this was going to be a difficult business negotiation.

 Summary:

Kento’s staff enthusiastically spread the news of him becoming ‘mates’ with Lily, leading to him being bombarded with congratulations and propositions for investment from the Tasogare Merchant Guild. At the Beast-person Association, he is celebrated as a “hero” for taking multiple females and is forced to accept Aerith-jou as one of his wives, before finally reaching the Adventurer’s Guild, where he is welcomed but faces a major hurdle when the Guild Master learns he plans to marry two of the guild’s strongest members: ‘Mad Dog’ and ‘Divine Bow’.

 —

 Character Insight:

Kento is revealed to be a fundamentally good-natured man who struggles to say no to taking responsibility, especially when the circumstances are enthusiastically forced upon him by others. His initial, pragmatic desire to have children has exploded into a full-blown societal expectation of polygamy, which he accepts, though with considerable personal discomfort and surprise. His loyalty to his staff and friends is a defining trait, driving his choices.

 Behind the Scene:

The author notes that the chapter passed the 30,000 point mark in reader popularity, expressing thanks and happiness for reaching this goal, indicating a key milestone for the series’ success.

 T/L:

 > ¹ [content] The “jou” suffix is often used for the daughters of respected or wealthy families, similar to “young mistress” or “madam,” but the author seems to prefer the more casual “Aerith.”

 > ² [content] The Japanese text uses the English loanword “teleportation” written in katakana, which refers to the magical or system-related transport from his original world.
