Chapter 274-2 New Ways to Use it

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

While saying that, Mei pulled a new Gioniium from the burlap sack and poured her magic into it.

The magic infused in the Gioniium flickered at its center, radiating a mysterious glow.

”This is the Gioniium infused with magic, and over here is the one infused with Origin.”

 ”…Huh?”

”The magic one is wavering, but the one with Origin isn’t moving at all.”

”You’re right. It’s completely still, like it’s frozen.”

”Exactly. The reason the Gioniium containing magic explodes is that the magic, which can’t escape, becomes volatile and bursts out when cracks form. On the other hand, the Origin one doesn’t waver at all as if it’s stuck to the Gioniium. So if it cracks, it should be safe, right?”

That must be why Estesia-san picked up the Gioniium filled with Origin without hesitation.

”I get the reasoning, but you didn’t have to throw it.”

”The ground here is soft, right? If it hits a hard spot, it won’t break properly.”

So she threw it at the wall… even so, I wish she had said something before tossing it.

”So? This is what happened. What do we do now, Neil?”

”Um, I want to find out what would happen if we used the Azure one next.”

”The Azure is the main form of Origin in this world, right? Who can handle something like that?”

 ”Actually, Momoka has Azure.”

”Really? I see! So that’s why she’s participating in this experiment.”

”Then, Momoka, can you flow your Azure into the Gioniium like I did? Is that possible?”

”──Hmm… Honestly, I’m worried I might not do it right since I haven’t really done it before. I’d love some help if possible.”

”Even if you ask for help, I can’t really do it. To manipulate someone else’s magic, I’d have to mix in my own, which ruins the experiment.”

What I really want to see is what happens when you channel Azure into the Gioniium.

Mixing in anything else makes the whole thing pointless.

”What about directly infusing it by hand? I think I could manage that, and with Origin, it shouldn’t explode, right?”

”No way. Just because it worked fine with Crimson doesn’t mean it’ll be safe with Azure.”

”Just like Niya-san said, Crimson has plenty of chances to be special. If it fails, we can just think of another way, so why not give it a shot?”

 ”Yeah… I get it.”

Momoka nodded slightly, then started to flow her Azure along the line on the ground.

The Azure moved slowly along the line, but once it passed 5 meters, it started to drift away and dissipate into the air.

 ”It’s not reaching at all.”

”It can’t be helped. Momoka hasn’t even mastered magic control properly. On top of that, controlling an Origin is difficult even for someone who’s used to magic control.”

Even with all my training, my limit for controlling an Origin is 40 meters, so just following a line without training and being able to maintain control up to ten meters away is pretty amazing, I think.

”It might be a bit risky, but how about we put up a wall at the very edge of where Momoka’s Azure can reach and try again?”

”Let’s do that… wait, hold on a sec.”

I was about to agree with Mei’s idea, but the sight before my eyes made me pause.

Once Momoka let go of her control, the Azure, which should have just scattered in the air like mist, somehow kept its shape and floated.

It was almost like it was being pulled into the Gioniium, where it got fixed in place without any wavering, just like the Crimson.

”What’s this now… Did the Gioniium pull in the Azure?”

”Or maybe the Azure was drawn to the Gioniium. Either way, is that how Origins are supposed to float around?”

”I don’t know, but at least with Crimson, once I let go of my control, it just melted into the air’s magic and disappeared.”

”The air’s magic? Then maybe it’s got something to do with this space.”

 ”This space?”

”Yeah, there’s not a speck of magic in this space.”

So that’s it, without the magic (mizu) to dissolve into, it can’t thin out.

I tried releasing my Crimson into the air without consuming it, and just like the Azure, it didn’t scatter like mist but floated softly and got pulled into the Gioniium, where it covered the already existing Azure and dyed the Gioniium with its own color.

Just like Snow-san said, it seems Crimson has the upper hand against Azure.

 ”Neil, you’re doing something dangerous.”

”Seriously, that was pretty reckless, wasn’t it?”

 ”Huh?”

”This is your first time mixing Crimson and Azure, right? What would you do if they repelled each other?”

 ”Ah.”

After Mei pointed it out, I realized just how dangerous my actions had been.

I had thought it would be a light experiment, wondering if Crimson would float without dissipating, but there was a real chance Crimson could clash with Azure inside the Gioniium and cause an explosion… I had told myself to be careful with Origin experiments, and here I was, messing up.

 ”I’m really sorry…”

I apologize to Mei, and Momoka.

”Be more careful next time. For now, it seems like there’s no difference between Crimson and Azure in this stage.”

”Yeah… right, Neil, from what I can see, it’s pretty stable, so maybe we can go ahead?”

 ”Maybe.”

”Huh? What are you talking about?”

”I’ve been searching for a way to store Crimson for a while now. Like magic power, Origin can recover when used, but there’s a limit to how much can be used in one day. So I was looking for something to store Origin, but the Clifast crystals for magic power just don’t have the strength.”

When the monster attack happened, I exhausted all my Crimson and passed out.

I can’t be sure similar situations won’t happen again, so I was thinking about needing a way to store Crimson just in case.

With Mei helping, I’ve been trying to figure out how to keep Crimson for a long time.

I could temporarily store it in a magic power container, but after a few days, the container would crack and leak, making it useless.

Then, while working on the roads, I saw the Gioniium dug up and had a lightbulb moment when Ronim-san asked if it could be useful for something.

I thought maybe Gioniium, with its overwhelming capacity compared to any magic power container, could allow for long-term storage of Crimson.

”If I can store Crimson long-term with this, the real question is if I can retrieve it.”

I picked up the Gioniium that had changed from blue to crimson at its center and tried to extract the crimson, but it wasn’t that easy.

Compared to the flowing, chaotic magic swirling around, the crimson was stable and moved easily when pulled, so it seemed relatively easier to extract.

If it was at the center of the Gioniium, it would be a different story, but at least I could definitely siphon it from the outer parts.

But then, the crimson at the center would be wasted… wait a second?

I grabbed the piece of Gioniium that Estesia-san had thrown first.

The crimson had moved to the center of the shattered Gioniium, and since it had broken and gotten smaller, the amount I could extract had increased compared to before.

With this in mind, I smashed the fragments further until they were tiny, eventually grinding them down to the size of a fingernail and finally succeeded in completely siphoning it out.

”Alright, this should work. If I break up all the Gioniium to this size and pack it in the right container, I can pull out the Origin whenever I need it.”

”It’s only because it’s the Origin that this method is possible. If I crush it down to this size, unstable magic would burst with a small shock, leading to chain reactions of total failure. My only worry is whether the Origin will really slip away over time.”

”That needs more testing. Time doesn’t flow here at all, so I’ll have to do it in the lab outside.”

”…Huh? Wait a minute, I heard time flows differently, but it doesn’t flow at all?”

 ”Yes, that’s correct.”

Estesia-san furrowed her brow and stared at me intensely with a serious face as I spoke.

 What is it?

Did I say something weird again without realizing?

”Why did you put this experiment off?”

”That’s because I couldn’t find a solid chunk of time to conduct the experiment… ah.”

”Oh, you only just noticed now? If time doesn’t flow here, then we never needed that at all. The only reason for that would be travel time, and we weren’t really busy enough to even have that, were we? Diana and Lewya refused on work grounds too, so it seems like everyone missed that.”

 ”You’re right…”

”I mean, if this space is so convenient, then no matter your sense of time, you could’ve done your paperwork here and not have to rush or lose sleep at night to tackle it.”

It’s true, if we worked in this space, there’d be no need to frantically finish paperwork or reduce sleep hours dealing with it at night.

Even though I understood this space’s unique trait of no time flow, I only saw it as a mildly useful experiment area.

I initially planned this as an experiment for Gioniium and Origin, but it turned out to yield more than just that.
