”Oh no. I’ve been working too hard,” Reina said as she looked at the clock. It was already past midnight. she thought, “Since there’s no overtime pay, I should just go home and sleep.” With that in mind, she stepped out of the laboratory into the dark hallway. She could clearly see Tomori standing outside.
”What’s this? Is someone still here?”
At the main entrance on the first floor, a carriage was parked, and people who looked like servants were standing around with the guards. Feeling suspicious, Reina moved carefully to avoid being noticed by the others. Then, at the landing of the stairs coming down from the second floor, she stopped, sensing someone below.
That’s definitely General Peacock. And… I think that’s Lord Asunabal, an Elf. What’s going on? Did they come secretly to see the gate at this hour? I couldn’t hear their conversation clearly, but it seemed like there was one more important person with them. Reina watched carefully, looking down from the stairs.
”!? I almost shouted out loud. What in the world is that strange creature?”
Could that possibly be… the spirit clan!? But if so, why would the enemy spirit clan be visiting the gate? Are they trying to scare them by showing up like this? No, that doesn’t make sense. But if they are from the spirit clan, getting closer might be dangerous. They are said to sense energy in the air. Since she works in this laboratory, she doesn’t think they’ll see her as an enemy right away, but it’s better to be careful.
Eventually, General Peacock and the others went downstairs, and after about 15 minutes, they returned to the first floor. There’s no doubt they were looking at the gate. Still… Reina’s mind was very confused. Why is the enemy spirit clan involved with this facility’s gate? What is the general thinking? Isn’t this gate supposed to keep the spirit clan away?
”You seem quite confused, Lieutenant.”
Suddenly, a voice came from behind. When she turned around, it was Zaharu.
”Zaharu… what in the world is that…”
”Ah, I didn’t want to involve you, Lieutenant, but I thought I would have to tell you eventually, so this saves me some trouble.”
”Trouble? What in the world is the general thinking!? And the spirit clan members too. I don’t understand at all.”
”You don’t need to know everything yet. The general will probably tell you himself eventually. But… well, this is the starting point of a great peace between the three tribes: demons, elves, and the spirit clan~.”
”Peace… if that’s true, I would be very happy… but why is the gate involved!?”
”That’s something for when it happens, so please pass on my regards to the queen of the elves.”
With that, Zaharu smiled and went off to his room.
”Peace… and so the matter with the queen was also found out. Well, it might have been guessed from the beginning… in any case, I need to contact Zerlant.”
”Oh, where are you going, Lieutenant Reina?”
”General Peacock!”
Reina didn’t notice that the general had walked right up to the stairs.
”General. What was that just now…”
”Lieutenant. I can’t tell you everything yet, but you can look forward to it. Also, thank you for finishing the gate room. I heard from Zaharu that it’s almost done, just needs the batteries connected. So, until the batteries are ready, please take some rest.”
When the general raised his right hand, soldiers with guns quickly came up from downstairs and surrounded Reina.
”Don’t worry. I won’t kill you. If anything happens to the equipment here, we’ll need your help. But if you interfere or tell anyone, that would be a problem, so please stay quiet for a while.”
Then Reina was taken by the soldiers and secretly locked up in a small cell inside the research facility.
