Volume 5 Chapter 12-2 Midnight Run? IV: Blaming The New Moon

”Don’t be so clueless. It’s you, right? The guy who has been bothering me for a while.”
”Well, if you say so, then I guess I really am me?”
Naoshi had no memory of it at all, but hearing her description made him feel wary.
”That’s so obvious…”
”I’m a different person. I’ve been here about two weeks.”
”Just a fake confession — it’s not that simple.”
Apparently, the timing and conditions somehow matched.
For her, and for Naoshi, luck was not on their side.
Could this really be happening? Naoshi thought, but he needed to hear more.
He raised both hands to show he meant no harm. He chose his words carefully, trying not to sound suspicious.
”I get that you’re cautious, and I’m sorry for scaring you. But I want to ask—what is that guy doing to you?”
”I know that’s your trick!”
It didn’t work.
The girl finally glared at him. She pointed with her words—a pink, fancy handheld fan, the kind a high school girl would carry.
(What are you doing? Fox-faced Kansai dialect brother.)
Confused, Naoshi lowered his stance and prepared himself.
“On Abiraunken Sowaka!”
When the girl said the mantra, her fan started to spin. A sudden, out-of-season wind blew wildly.
”Eh──!?”
Not just a normal wind, but demon energy wind. It ripped Naoshi off the rooftop.
He felt like he was floating, then his body was thrown over the building’s edge onto the street below.
”That’s probably bad in mid-air, right?”
The girl stood at the roof’s edge and said that. Naoshi shrugged.
The wind stopped, and their free fall began.
”That’s outside my scope──what’s your name?”
The girl pressed her lower eyelid with her finger and stuck out her tongue. She smiled like she won.
”I won’t tell you. Well then.”
The sound of wind slapped the air.
Black feathers, like a crow’s, spread from her back as she flew into the sky.
The mantra, the feather fan… it was clear.
(Is this the work of a tengu──?)
While thinking this, Naoshi turned to land on his feet.
He put his feet together, bent his knees, and leaned forward slightly.
He moved his spirit power (reiryoku) through his body.
By the time he was ready, the ground was coming.
Luckily, or maybe on purpose, no one was below.
”Huh──!”
He rolled using five points of contact—feet, legs, hips, back, shoulders—to spread the impact. Then he stood up.
”────!”
Still, falling from dozens of meters made a loud sound that drew attention and screams.
”Ah, sorry for the trouble. I’m filming a video. See, you can spot the drone above, right?”
Unsure how to calm the crowd, Naoshi pointed to the empty sky and made smoke.
His unhurt body convinced most people. Interest quickly faded except for a few.
”Nao-nii, are you okay!?”
Suzuri rushed over, worried.
He nodded.
”It’s nothing serious. More important—Suzuri-chan, please arrange cleanup with Ako-chan.”
While stretching to check for injuries, Naoshi showed the cracked pavement where he had landed.
”Are you more worried about me, or still planning to chase?”
”Of course, the Kazuramichi family motto is to fight back if attacked.”
”Isn’t it going to be a big problem if you do the same thing? Just be careful, okay?”
”Who are you worried about, Suzuri-chan?”
”I wonder if it will become a crime if you go too far.”
”Well then, I’ll ‘just’ be careful.”
Leaving that warning, Naoshi took off running.
His speed on the ground was as fast as someone with wings.
He had already sensed the presence once.
As long as she used her tengu power, he would not let it escape──
”Huh!?”
After turning several corners, Naoshi stopped at a sudden burst of spirit energy.
There was no anger or hate, but the pressure was strong.
Definitely first-class, and the best of the best, like Naoshi himself.
”What do you think you’re doing? That’s a bad joke.”
Tense, Naoshi looked toward the alley where the spirit energy came from.
”Oh, I wonder who it is──why are you here?”
At that moment, a person in traditional clothes appeared from the dark.
A suspicious fox-faced young man speaking Kansai dialect.
