Volume 3 Chapter 4 A Delicious Scent

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

If this doesn’t work, I’ll just give up and run back to the surface.

I’ve decided. I stand in front of the door.

With my secret trick in hand.

 ”Master…”

Lifia’s worried voice reaches my ears.

I gently stroke her blonde hair and smile to reassure her.

”It’ll be okay. Opening the door is just a moment’s work. Whether it goes well or not, that’s the end of it.”

If it fails, it’s just a loss.

If it works, it’s a gain.

That’s the extent of the plan.

”One more time, are you sure there are no other adventurers around?”

”Yes. I couldn’t sense anyone but Hasa.”

 ”Alright, then it’s settled.”

I open the menu screen and watch Hasa Fisco, the bounty target.

Hasa was searching around the area where the door was, but it seems he gave up and started to walk away.

 But he’s still close.

 Too close.

He’s not letting his guard down.

He must be expecting us to show up again.

If we’re close, he’ll attack the moment the door opens.

I have to watch out for knives and thrown weapons too.

To carry out this plan, I need to wait for him to move a bit further away.

Wait until he’s just within range.

 Still close.

 Too close.

 Okay!

 I open the door.

 Hasa instantly turns around.

His eyes are filled with cruelty and cunning, and a vicious smile plays on his lips.

He must think his prey has come back to him.

 Not this time, Hasa.

Now it’s your turn to be the prey.

I throw “it” with all my might at him.

Enhanced by my level-up, “it” flies straight towards Hasa without missing.

 ”Hmph”

Hasa slashes with his sword, cutting it in 2.

The small bottle falls to the ground and rolls.

The liquid inside spills out, scattering around Hasa.

”Is it poison? It won’t work on me, you know.”

Hasa laughs through his nose as he speaks.

The liquid sticks to his skin and clothes, but he doesn’t seem bothered.

He doesn’t even try to avoid it.

Of course it won’t work on him.

That’s not who I want it to affect.

I murmur to myself and close the door.

 After all, it’s not poison.

In fact, I drink it every night.

There’s no need for Hasa to work.

 The goal is somewhere else.

It’s enough once he has been soaked in that liquid.

 That will make things happen.

I’m not sure if it’ll work.

But I did everything I could.

 Now it’s up to fate.

I breathe out inside the room.

Just facing Hasa from this distance was almost too much with the tension.

”Master, is that the drink you always have?”

 Lifia tilts her head, curious.

To her, a simple nutritional drink probably seems pointless, an obvious question.

Yeah, what I threw was an aphrodisiac kept in the Love Hotel fridge.

”Well, just watch. If it works, things won’t be so easy for him either.”

I smile to reassure Lifia and pull her closer.

”Let’s wait here for a while. There’s nothing else we can do.”

I sit on the sofa and let Lifia sit between my knees.

Gently holding her small body from behind, she willingly leans into me.

 ”Mmm… Master…”

I can feel her slender, soft girl’s body.

 She’s mine.

No one, ever, will hurt her.

Swearing that, I open the menu and check External Information.

The screen shows the wanted criminal, Hasa Fisco.

’Did he hide again? What was that? Was it just to annoy me?’

Hasa lightly swings his sword, sweeping away the spilled liquid residue.

 His face looks suspicious.

’Well, it’s fine. Next time for sure…huh?’

 Suddenly, Hasa stops moving.

A faint shadow falls across his face.

 ’…What?’

Hasa gazes up with a cautious look.

In his line of sight, white shadows keep appearing one after another.

 They are birds.

Countless white birds descend from the sky.

Their bodies look predatory, with the heads oddly resembling strange chickens.

 Clouds are coming down.

 ’What is this…!’

The true form is a flock of Hitchcock.

They usually fly high in the sky and rarely come down to the ground.

So many flocks that, from far away, they just look like clouds floating in the sky.

They say that the whole flock comes down when they find their favorite food, the beautiful boa.

 The number is overwhelming.

Thousands, no, tens of thousands of birds swoop down, blocking the light and making the surroundings dim.

The worst monster in the third level of the dungeon has descended.

 ’No way, why…?’

 Hasa’s voice shakes.

Frenzied birds are gliding in circles above him.

Countless red eyes up there shine ominously, staring right at him.

Suddenly, one of them lets out a sharp cry and dives straight for Hasa.

Its beak is sharp, aiming directly at his throat.

 ’Hmph!’

Hasa quickly swings his sword and slices the frenzied bird in half.

With a dying scream, the bird falls to the ground, feathers flying everywhere as it stops moving.

 But that wasn’t the end.

In the next moment, several more birds attack at once.

Countless beaks and claws close in on Hasa like a wave.

 ’Tch!’

Hasa prepares to fight them all off.

His sharp sword strikes down one bird after another, and the ground quickly fills with white feathers and corpses.

 However, the flock doesn’t stop.

In fact, they seem to be increasing in number.

Above, countless frenzied birds continue to spiral, coming down one after the other.

 ’Damn it, this is…!’

 Panic seeps into Hasa’s expression.

 Still, he doesn’t stop moving.

Each time he cuts one down, a new bird attacks, and the endless battle rages on.

Soon, the menu screen showing the External Information is also covered in white mist, stealing his sight.

He can only see the frenzied birds and a flurry of feathers.

The sound of fierce flapping and the birds’ shrill cries echo through the dungeon.

’Damn it… what the hell is this! …ugh!’

With Hasa’s shout, a dull thud echoes.

The sound of the sword swinging continues nonstop, with the birds’ high-pitched cries and flapping resonating throughout the dungeon.

 ’Wooooo! Aerial Sword!’

 Hasa’s scream shakes the dungeon.

In the next moment, a light bursts from the white mist.

 An overwhelming power flashes forth.

I sliced through the flock of crazy birds that filled the surroundings.

Feathers scattered, and the sky cleared for a moment.

The white mist that covered the dungeon tore apart, and my view opened up.

 ”W-Wow…”

I saw the power through the menu screen and couldn’t help but let out a voice of admiration.

That one strike probably took down hundreds of crazy birds.

Countless bird remains piled up on the ground, and feathers danced like snow.

 ’Huff, huff… How about that!’

Hasa panted with the sword still raised, barking out as if certain of victory.

 But──

His expression froze again as he looked up at the sky.

 Not yet.

 It’s not over.

The sky that cleared for a moment due to Hasa’s big attack started to be covered again by white shadows.

The flock wasn’t stopping; new crazy birds kept swooping down from above.

It was like the swarm was endless.

 ’This… is insane!’

Hasa’s scream disappeared into the void, and the dungeon echoed with the high-pitched cries and flapping sounds of the crazy birds.

The white storm seemed to grow even stronger.

The crazy birds clustered together, swirling as they attacked Hasa in the center.

 The view turned white again.
