Volume 3 Chapter 36 The Son-in-Law

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

Lieutenant Colonel Helbert’s proposal was, in effect, a death warrant for my freedom.

The plan was brutally simple: protect me from assassins by creating a decoy, send that double back to Schweilitz, exile me to the New Continent, appoint Reinhardt as my successor, and then return the decoy to the motherland before quietly burying the truth where no one would ever think to look.

It was a miserable, exhausting scheme, but the people on the other side—including the Fourth Sage—held all the cards. No matter how much I disliked it, I had no way to force my own solution through.

That bitter reality was impossible to ignore. The only reason this newborn nation was still standing was because the Kingdom of Schweilitz continued to support it. They supplied maintenance packs for the Type 98 Golems, sent over the old hags who managed them, and regularly dispatched inspectors. Nobody was going to convince me those inspections were only for gathering information. They were here to keep a hand on the reins.

I had hoped to spend my days enjoying a peaceful life as a Grand Duke, but it seemed fate had taken one look at that dream and laughed.

Across from me, Sonya sat at the round table with the rigid posture of a veteran soldier. Her usual smile was nowhere to be found, and the heavy atmosphere pressing down on the room made me want to run for the door.

”Now then,” Lieutenant Colonel Helbert said in a clipped, precise tone. “Let us move on to the specifics.”

Before he could continue, the Minister of Finance—a former fishery magnate—raised his hand. The title sounded far grander than the position actually was. In a country with no currency and barely a treasury, most of his work involved arguing with Thomas over minor expenses.

”And just when,” the minister asked in his rough merchant’s Schweilitz, “do you intend to return our Grand Duke to us, then?”

 I blinked.

”I beg your pardon?” Helbert asked, sounding as though he believed he had misheard.

”The Grand Duke is the one who brought us together,” the minister replied. “We only want to know when he will return.”

”How can we make you return him?” the Minister of State added. Once the Town Guards Commander of Cain, he still struggled with the language, but the meaning behind his words was unmistakable.

Then Al Gildas, Lord of Yoghes, rose from his seat.

”When our village was attacked by the Haritz remnants and the fools following them, we faced two Golems,” he said. “We were preparing to abandon everything. I ordered my sons to hold the line while the others escaped. Then Grand Duke Fee appeared from nowhere, seized control of the enemy Golems, and fought until the attackers broke. I doubted him at first, but after witnessing that with my own eyes, I could not deny what he had done for us.”

 Helbert’s face visibly paled.

The Fourth Sage, unable to understand the local language, glanced from speaker to speaker in confusion while the atmosphere in the room grew heavier with every passing moment.

 A god?

Being called a hero was one thing. Being called a god left me completely at a loss.

”We lost Lord Cain as well,” the Minister of Finance continued in broken Schweilitz. “We could not stop the remnants. They did whatever they wanted. Then the Grand Duke stepped in, and the people of Cain survived because of him.”

”We were facing two hundred heavy cavalry,” Duke Igor said, his flawless Schweilitz carrying the calm authority of a nobleman. “The Proton Order was crushing us, and we had no answer. Then the Grand Duke destroyed them at the Battle of Mustopae and even captured Trabius. That victory preserved our nation.”

 He lowered his head slightly.

”Because of him, we became one country. If the Grand Duke’s life is in danger, we understand. All we ask is that you promise to return him to us.”

”Tell me,” the Fourth Sage said, breaking the silence at last, “what do you think of His Majesty the King?”

”A noble and virtuous ruler,” Duke Igor answered without hesitation.

”Some of the Haritz men called him a stubborn tyrant,” the former fishery magnate added, “but I believe he is a magnificent king.”

 The Fourth Sage nodded once.

”Our King, Heinrich IV, is ruthless.”

 The room fell silent again.

”His Majesty has fathered six children,” the Sage continued. “The eldest is imprisoned. The second and third are dead. The fourth was assassinated. For all practical purposes, his line of sons has ended. His eldest daughter married into the Sabaski family. Only the second princess, Tina, remains.”

”Then,” Duke Igor asked, leaning forward, “does that make her first in line for the throne?”

The Sage nodded before slowly raising a finger and pointing directly at me.

”Larry, you are the leading candidate to become Princess Tina’s husband. His Majesty has already approved the match.”

For a moment, my mind went completely blank.

”Do not misunderstand,” the Sage continued. “The one who would marry Princess Tina is Sámi I, the first Grand Duke of Fee. Not Larry Fee Getys.”

”But they are the same person,” I replied, keeping my voice as level as possible. “Both of them are me.”

 ”No.”

The answer came so quickly that it almost sounded insulting.

”When the Kingdom granted you a title, Larry Fee Getys ceased to exist in legal terms and became Larry von Fee. Did you not know that?”

 I stared at him.

”The social standing is equivalent,” he added with infuriating seriousness. “There is no problem.”

I suddenly understood why people found scholars irritating.

”Furthermore, Princess Tina stands second in line to the Celt throne. Her aunt, Shuna McMorrow, is first, but she is frail and has abandoned any intention of marriage.”

 Duke Igor’s eyes widened.

”Then Schweilitz and the Celt Kingdom may eventually be united under a single ruler?”

 ”Precisely.”

I pointed at the obvious flaw.

 ”His Majesty is still alive.”

”Larry,” the Sage replied, “His Majesty is forty-six. Even if he fathered another child today, that child would not reach adulthood for fifteen years. By then, His Majesty would be past sixty. Even if he abdicated early, raising and preparing an heir would require another decade. Few people in this land live beyond seventy, and ruling a kingdom is not work suited to an old man.”

Then he fixed me with a steady gaze.

”You and the Princess are our last hope.”

 I rubbed my forehead.

”You said I was the leading candidate. That means there is another candidate, does it not?”

”Naturally,” the Sage said. “There is no shortage of pedigree-heavy stallions eager for the opportunity.”

”In that case, send one of them.”

 The answer came out immediately.

”I am heading to the New Continent anyway, so choose whichever noble beast catches your eye and make sure he gets returned to the Grand Principality.”

Duke Igor translated my proposal into elegant Schweilitz.

 The response was immediate.

Every minister at the table fixed me with a cold stare sharp enough to pierce armor.

 I nearly recoiled.

 What was that about?

A few minutes ago, they had been practically begging for my return.

”Larry, my boy,” Duke Igor said, rubbing his temple, “were you not listening to a word we said?”

”I heard you loud and clear,” I replied. “I’m the primary candidate, but you also said there was a backup candidate, didn’t you?”

”That is not the issue,” the Fourth Sage cut in. “Running a country is an enormous task, and no queen can shoulder it alone. As her husband, you would be expected to share that burden. If this becomes a personal union, you would be dealing with two nations. Do you truly believe you can spend your life as little more than a breeding stud?”1

I had never even seen a stud, so the old man’s comparison did not help much.

”If you look at His Majesty’s situation,” Duke Igor continued, “you will see that internal conflict is often more exhausting than any foreign threat. There is nobody but you who could stand beside the Queen and help carry that responsibility.”

Once his words were translated, the entire Grand Principality delegation nodded together.

Traitors. Every last one of them.

”Fine,” I muttered. “Give me a moment to think.”

If I stayed here, I felt like an ant willingly crawling into an ant-lion’s pit. I needed time to clear my head.

”I’m afraid,” the Fourth Sage said with a faint smile, “that there is no choice to make.”

The moment I rose, Instructor Sergei, Major Sonya, and even Second Lieutenant Veronia stood as well.

There really was no escaping these people.

Like a bird returning to its cage, I sank back into my chair.

”Good,” the Sage said. “Since I am getting on in years, I have decided to leave my residence in the Royal Capital to you. It can house thirty people and comes fully plumbed, complete with a large bath and a swimming pool.”

”No,” I replied. “I already bought a house, and it comes with maids.”

Now that I thought about it, I wondered how that place was doing. I would have to ask Kenze later.

 The Sage clicked his tongue.

”Once you return, you will be a Marquis. A Marquis does not live in a commoner’s house.”

 ”A Marquis?”

My alarm bells immediately began ringing.

”Besides, it would be awkward to have your former professor—the one you nearly had an affair with—living next door, would it not?”

I tried explaining that it had only been an attempted affair, but one look around the room told me nobody was interested in that distinction.

More importantly, how did he even know?

”I imagine you have been just as reckless with women over here,” the Sage continued. “A larger residence seems necessary.”

Even Thomas was bent over in his chair trying—and failing—not to laugh.

”How many children have you fathered, exactly?”

Major Sonya had returned to her seat and was watching me with an amused grin.

 ”One, I think?” I answered.

 Duke Igor stared at me.

 Right. Ellie.

I had forgotten about that angle entirely.

 ”No, wait. Not yet.”

”Who?” the Secretary of State asked.

”Katri, one of the maids, and Pia Spitz, the mage.”

I had checked the dates with Katri, yet somehow it still happened. As for Pia, I had told her to use mana-based contraception, but things had gotten out of hand. She passed out, and when she woke up, she was pregnant.

”That is not all, is it?” the Sage asked.

”Hold on,” Thomas said. “There are more?”

I searched my memory. Nothing immediately came to mind.

Then the Sage supplied the answer himself.

”Manuela Moritz. The former Marquis’s wife.”

 ”…Could it be?”

”Indeed. It appears she deliberately chose to conceive your child. Since she herself committed no crime, her punishment was reduced. She now remains in slavery.”

I closed my eyes. A perfect batting average.

”Our investigation concluded that she had largely been manipulated by others,” the Sage continued. “If you wish to purchase her, your application will receive priority.”

If I did not buy her, Marie would probably kill me.

”So, apart from Reinhardt, how many children do you have?”

Before I could answer, Helbert answered for me.

”Angelica, Marie Novakova’s daughter. Griselda, Nico Vogt’s daughter. And Peter, Lieutenant Louise’s son.”

I stared. Louise had really given birth safely.

The news hit me harder than the others.

”Man, you really get around,” Thomas said.

”I knew you were a womanizer,” Duke Igor added, shaking his head, “but even I did not expect this.”

”I suppose one could call it a condition,” the Fourth Sage concluded.

That remark struck straight through my chest.

By that point, I had completely lost the energy to argue.

”In that case,” the Sage said, pressing the advantage, “you should simply live at my estate. We can arrange the registration after arriving in the Royal Capital.”

”I understand,” I replied quietly. “Thank you.”

When I entered the room where my sisters-in-law were waiting, Kenze immediately noticed my expression.

”What’s with that face?” she asked. “You look completely drained.”

 ”Yeah,” I admitted. “I think I am.”

”Hmph. Men who spend all their time looking backward never get very far.”

Then she struck an exaggerated pose.

”What? I thought I’d try giving you a little encouragement.”

I appreciated the effort, but my mind was elsewhere.

Beside the large bed, Reinhardt slept peacefully.

”Sister-in-law,” I said, “I heard you’ve decided to stay here.”

”Yes,” she replied with a gentle nod. “Leaving Reinhardt behind would be far too sad.”

 ”Are you really sure?”

”This is the country you built, isn’t it? Then Reinhardt is the one who must inherit it.”

The logic felt a little abrupt, but I understood what she meant.

She had already made up her mind.

She would raise Reinhardt here, in a land that was still unfamiliar to her.

”In exchange,” she said, “I want another child.”

I could not find any reason to object.

She was still only twenty-one, and despite everything she had endured, she remained as beautiful as when I first met her.

When I reached out, she took my hand.

It was still cold, just as I remembered.

I drew her closer, and some of the weight pressing on my chest finally began to ease.

”Ah, geez,” Kenze grumbled from the sofa. “I really cannot be bothered with this.”

”Hey,” I said, grateful for the distraction, “how about a sparring match later?”

 ”Now you’re talking.”

I let mana flow gently between us as I held my sister-in-law’s hands. The familiar scent surrounding her brought back memories I had not thought about in years.

 (Please take care of Reinhardt.)

I tried sending the thought through mana, but she lacked the ability to respond that way.

 Even so, she smiled.

For some reason, it felt as though she had understood.

 ”Ah…”

 Her expression softened.

”That’s exactly what I mean,” Kenze complained. “I cannot be bothered with this.”

”Be quiet,” I shot back. “I’ll get to you later.”

 ”You promise?”

”Yeah. Oh, right. What happened to Zaboo?”

”I left her with my old commanding officer. Didn’t you hear?”

 I had not.

”Larry,” my sister-in-law said softly, drawing my attention back to her.

 ”Oh. Sorry.”

 ”That’s all right.”

Her eyes, half-hidden beneath golden lashes, were shining with happiness.

Looking into them, I was reminded once again how deeply I cared for her.

”It’s been a while,” she whispered. “So be gentle.”

 ”You can count on it.”
