Volume 4 Chapter 65 Rhodes River

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

”You little shit. Of course. It’s you.”

The bellow hit me in the gut. Was he talking to me?

A massive shadow loomed in front of me. Then the shing of a blade being drawn.

 Shit!

I dropped low. The sword whistled past so close I felt it graze my hair.

 ”Tch. Gettin’ old.”

No, old man. That’s not it. If I hadn’t trained at Old Master’s village, my head would be decoratin’ the floor right now.

 ”Big Master, please stop!”

 I heard a familiar voice.

”Out of my way! This bastard dies!”

Oh shit! I could see the big man’s face clearly.

 Helmut Vogt. Nico’s grandfather.

Behind him, someone—one of the Vogt paper shop’s clerks, I think—had him in a full nelson.

Old Rocani and an elderly Dwarf watched with wide eyes, clearly not followin’ what was happenin’.

”He knocked up my granddaughter Nico, then abandoned her! And as if that wasn’t enough, he sold off the Kneff girl and her child to some foreign country! This bastard right here!”

 ”That’s a misunderstanding! I didn’t abandon Nico, and I didn’t sell off my sister-in-law!”

I denied the old man’s accusations.

The “Kneff girl” was my sister-in-law Teressa. She was the eldest daughter of the Kneff family. The Kneff and Vogt families were in-laws—Nico was Teressa’s cousin.

”You still got the nerve to lie? The fact is, you’ve ignored Nico for over two years!”

 Ugh.

 I couldn’t argue with that.

Nico had been servin’ as my sister-in-law Teressa’s lady-in-waitin’ at my family home. When I enrolled in the Bizan Magic School, Nico ran away from home—reckless as always—and installed herself as my caretaker in the dorms. Then, of her own will, she ended up pregnant. I’d seen her once before goin’ to Rus, but that was over two years ago. Not since.

”Go on, say something! You rotten bastard!”

 ”I had… circumstances.”

Circumstances. The Empire of Rus. Founding the Fee Grand Principality. Restorin’ the Kingdom of Larland. For some reason endin’ up on the other side of the planet. Two years can fly by, you know?

The frustration of not bein’ able to explain any of that in one word.

”‘Circumstances.’ What a convenient word. And why aren’t the Kneff woman and her child at your home in Strock Village? Which perverted noble did you sell them to?”

”Don’t be stupid. You’re sayin’ I sold my sister-in-law and my son?”

They’d gone to the Fee Grand Principality. Reinhardt had become its leader, with Teressa actin’ as one of his guardians. And the one who’d taken them there was that middle-aged Intelligence Bureau officer—Helbert.

I’d been in the Grand Principality the whole time. I had nothin’ to do with it.

”What about it? Your own brother said so.”

Brother? Brother Hans? What the hell was he sayin’? That bastard.

”Sister-in-law and Reinhardt are in the Fee Grand Principality.”

There was no point hidin’ it anymore.

 ”Still schemin’?!”

Helmut broke free of the clerk’s hold and raised his sword overhead.

In that instant—if I’d hesitated even for a moment, it would’ve been fatal—the blade swept past, inches from my face. For an old man, he was terrifyin’ly sharp.

 ”Reinhardt is—”

I started speakin’ as I circled to his left, bracin’ for his next move.

 ”Bastard—”

His face puckered like he’d bitten into something sour. He didn’t like my movement—he put distance between us.

This wasn’t some retired paper shop owner. Who the hell was this man?

”Reinhardt is the head of sta—”

I tried to rephrase, but he didn’t wait.

 ”RAAAAGH!”

With a howl, Helmut brought his sword down in a diagonal slash from his upper left.

I dodged the tip, stepped inside his guard, and went for his hand on the hilt.

 But—

He stopped the swing mid-arc, pulled the hilt back, and drove it into my chest.

I twisted sideways, barely avoidin’ the hit, but he swept my feet out from under me. I hit the ground hard.

”Damn heretic! Makin’ me work for it!”

The old man gloated, adjustin’ his grip on the sword.

 Too easy, old man.

In the instant he adjusted his grip, I palmed his exposed shin and drained his mana. The white-haired giant collapsed, unconscious.

”Jesus, I thought I was gonna die. Are you really a great-grandfather?”

When I stood up, the three spectators stared at me like I was insane.

Too much? But if I hadn’t done that, I’m pretty sure he would’ve killed me.

”I—I really must be goin’, Larry.”

Right. The transfer gate wouldn’t stay open forever.

Old Rocani of the Land of the Fire Ring double-checked the transfer gate’s openin’ time and date, then returned to the other side of the planet.

But what was I supposed to do with this old man?

I asked the elderly Dwarf if he could carry him. He shook his head left and right.

”I’m too old myself. No way I’ve got the strength to haul Vogt’s big frame.”

Even Dwarves get old, I guess. But carryin’ him with just the three of us would be a pain.

”Guess I’ll wake him up, then.”

I pushed his weapons aside. No sense takin’ chances.

I laid him on his back, positioned myself in a squat so I could bolt if needed, took his wrist, and gradually fed mana back into him.

Before long, his eyes opened. He blinked a few times, then turned just his eyes toward me.

 ”Right. You’re a mage.”

It sounded like he was talkin’ to himself.

 ”Did you forget?”

I asked, stayin’ cautious. He didn’t answer.

”Where did you learn to fight?”

”Old Master’s village. They worked me like a soldier, even though I was a civilian.”

I tried to inject some humor, but his expression didn’t change. I worried I’d offended him. Then—

”I see. Then I’ll listen to your excuses. Why did you abandon Nico?”

”Before that—can I ask you something?”

 ”What?”

 ”Is Griselda doin’ well?”

Griselda. It’s Nico’s daughter or my daughter.

For just a moment, I thought I saw the old man’s cheeks relax.

”Yeah. She talks up a storm. Takes after Nico—she’s clever.”

She’d only just turned two. Talkin’ already, huh? I just hope her mother’s sharp tongue didn’t rub off on her.

”I won’t let you meet her.”

 ”Why?”

”Why? Who would let some slacker father who catches venereal diseases anywhere near their granddaughter?”

So word had gotten around about the syphilis. And he just kept gettin’ more unlikeable.

 ”Anyway. Let’s hear your excuses.”

Helmut sat up, crossed his legs, and faced me.

With that, we did introductions. The man who’d restrained Helmut was Lubellman, clerk of the Vogt paper shop. The elderly Dwarf was Garda.

After the formalities, I gave them an abbreviated account—from my days at Bizan Magic School through the Magic Academy.

I told them about losin’ Ms. Henrietta in the Haritz Rebellion.

About my research on magical tools at Old Master’s village and becomin’ an associate professor.

About how my deal with the Amazoness at the Battle of Fifty-Three Checkpoints was deemed overreach, earnin’ me a death sentence.

About how the condition to avoid execution was to kidnap a VIP from the Empire of Rus—and how I’d accidentally kidnapped Emperor Fyodor III and his empress.

About cuttin’ a deal with the emperor and bein’ allowed back home, only to be separated from my companions and stranded among Sámi speakers.

About how, while fightin’ off the Proton Order and a former major named Thomas from Schweilitz, I’d somehow unified three local factions into a Grand Principality and been installed as its first leader.

About how the Schweilitz Intelligence Bureau had moved to declare me dead, made Reinhardt the second Grand Duke—Sámi II—and installed my sister-in-law Teressa as one of his guardians.

About how I, supposedly dead, investigated the Boltechino ruins, went to Frontier Count Pugachev’s territory, came back to find the old Kingdom of Larland in chaos, and had to help rebuild it.

About finally returnin’ to Schweilitz, only to find myself engaged to Princess Tina, confined to the palace.

About escapin’, gettin’ kidnapped and taken to Kure.

About how Rosa—a former student now a Naval Academy professor—was abducted, and I was ordered to assassinate her, so I boarded the cuttin’-edge cruiser Izumo to find her in the Dwarf Kingdom’s capital of Tete.

About how I abandoned the assassination.

About the storm that swept me away on my return voyage, until I washed up in the Land of the Fire Ring—Androgynos.

”So you see. Even if I wanted to see Nico, I couldn’t.”

I finished summarizin’. One hour of nonstop talkin’.

The three listeners were stunned silent.

”I’d heard about this new Grand Principality. But it was you?”

Helmut studied my face with renewed interest.

”You even went to the Dwarf Kingdom—where no one from our family has ever set foot.”

The elderly Dwarf looked equally amazed.

A long silence followed. Then a figure appeared at the entrance.

”Gramps, are you done? I’m hungry.”

The face was backlit, impossible to see clearly, but the body was clearly a child. Garda’s grandchild? But the build was too slender for a Dwarf. Way too slender.

”Shall we relocate? I’ll have food prepared.”

The elderly Dwarf started walkin’ toward the cave entrance.

Old Vogt retrieved his sword from across the room and followed. Everyone moved out.

The transfer gate was located in an old Luminous Magic-Iron minin’ site. A side tunnel led to a diagonal shaft stretchin’ ten kilometers beyond the gate.

Emergin’ from the tunnel, we stood on a mountain slope—apparently the eastern edge of the Horn Mountains. Below, a narrow river flowed through a valley, with houses clustered along its banks.

”The luminous magic-iron is long gone. That village down there was lively once, but now—aside from Vogt’s place—it’s just a summer shelter for goatherds, and dwarven prospectors drop by a few times a year.”

The elderly Dwarf explained as he sealed the tunnel entrance.

 ”Gramps, I’m hungry.”

”Right, right. We’ll go home and have breakfast.”

The boy smilin’ at Garda’s words looked about ten.

 Wait.

He had short hair, but a delicate, feminine face. A narrow waist. His skin was more reddish than pale—Latin in tone. Hair and eyes nearly black.

He clearly wasn’t related to the Dwarf Garda by blood.

Maybe a male bride. The build looked familiar—like those children I’d seen in the Lamu tribe.

If he was Amazoness, poking into it probably wouldn’t end well. I kept quiet, followin’ the child and the old Dwarf down the mountain slope.

The path led directly into the village’s main street. Through a gate at the entrance, past houses—most of them crumblin’ ruins—until, just before the village’s far edge, smoke rose from a chimney.

 ”Grandma, I’m hungry.”

A boy broke into a run and hurled himself into the house.

Following close behind, a plump dwarf woman with a square face emerged, wiping her hands on her apron as she welcomed them in.

”Please, come in, come in,” she said, gesturing to a large table. Breakfast was laid out—bread and soup, just like back home.

Breakfast, huh… For me, though, it’s dinner.

I could’ve used something more filling.

 Can’t be helped when there’s a twelve-hour time difference.

Still, I wasn’t about to turn down a free meal. I gratefully accepted the breakfast set before me.

”So this ‘Mr. Rocani’—one of the elders, wasn’t it?—called you an agent,” the old man said.

”Who said I’m your grandfather? You know full well what a Vogt shop does, don’t you?”

 ”It’s a paper shop.”

”Exactly. The people from the Land of the Fire Ring seem to consider parchment made from cliff goat hide a necessity. Ever since the old days—back when the Transfer Gate was in Salzheim, the rock salt mining town—our shop has traded with them. And even about a hundred years ago, when they said they were closing the Gate and relocated it to this now-defunct Luminous Magic-Iron mine… the trade continued.”

An agent in the sense of an aid mediation1 broker, then.

Come to think of it, Ms. Rao had mentioned something about writing programs on parchment.

”Well, it’s not just parchment. We sell Luminous Magic-Iron, amber, and even high-quality wheat and bacon. And before you ask—no, it’s not smuggling. We’ve got permission from the Kingdom Office. Officially, that is. We just don’t publicize it.”

”So was there anything you imported from the Land of the Fire Ring?”

”They wouldn’t tell us about that. But what they took to the Kingdom Office looked like books.”

 ”Paper books?”

”Probably. The paper used—most likely cheap stuff they bought from us.”

The old man says “cheap paper,” so it’s probably wood-based paper, not parchment.

”I’ll take you to the delivery site. This time, that’s as far as I’ve been hired to go.”

Got it. The rest is up to me.

”So the question is how we get you there.”

 ”Hm?”

”If you follow the road from the village down, you’ll pass through a few towns and reach Salzheim, where they mine rock salt. But from Salzheim to Seiren Village, that’s the King’s direct domain. You’ll need a transit permit to pass. Do you have one?”

”No—Viscount Bizan’s Treasure Sword2, my bankbook, they’re all at my house near the Kingdom Office.”

”We could hide you in a wagon. But if they found you, it’d be a head-lopping3 on the spot.”

”Look, if I’m taking this job as an agent, shouldn’t you be making me a fake transit permit or figuring something out?”

”There’s another way. A game trail—used by dwarf prospectors.”

Hmm… Back home in Strock Village, monster activity doesn’t peak until late October. It’s September now, but up in the mountains, they might already be stirring.

Better than getting caught and losing my head on the spot—but where does that trail lead?

”The stream running alongside this village is a tributary of the Rhodes River.”

 I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

”That’s right—the same river that flows through Strock Village.”

Follow the Rhodes River downstream to Obernbach, then arrange passage on a trading ship there, sail up the Danube to the Royal Capital. Can’t get inside the walls, but they’ve arranged for someone from the Kingdom Office to meet me and hand me over.

Wait—if I go a little further down the Rhodes, there’s the house the Fourth Sage gave me. It’s got a waterwheel for drawing water, and right next to it… a dock.

If I get back home and retrieve my bankbook, I can breeze through checkpoints with priority access. And with the royal family’s crest on my hat and clothes, I could even enter the palace.

 After that, though… who knows.

As I perked up, the old man fixed me with a stone-cold serious look.

”There are three problems with going down the Rhodes. First: it takes seven days just to reach a decent road. Second: the first three days pass through land where monster activity is especially high. Third: you’ll be passing through areas where your acquaintances and relatives live—including Strock Village. You cannot be seen. After all, impossible as it sounds, you came from the other side of this planet.”

 He’s right.

And that’s not all. If Monica finds me, I’ll get a few good punches in before she even starts, and then I’ll be in for it. If Yutia catches me, she’ll cry. And the worst of all would be Brother Hans. The thought alone gives me a headache.

Ugh… So maybe I should just take my chances on the main road and hope my head stays on.

 Translation Notes:

1 The Japanese term “エージェント” (agent) here specifically refers to a trade intermediary or broker who facilitates negotiations between parties; rendered as “aid mediation broker” to capture the nuance of facilitating commercial/political transactions rather than the more common espionage or representative meaning of “agent”.

2 The term “Treasure Sword” (Treasure Sword) likely refers to a specific named weapon or ceremonial blade given by Viscount Bizan; preserves the English rendering from the source while maintaining its status as a proper noun artifact.

3 Adapted from Japanese “首はね” (kubi wa ne) – a colloquial term for decapitation or beheading as punishment. “Head-lopping” chosen for its visceral, slightly darkly humorous quality that matches the protagonist’s tone and the casual way the old man presents the risk.
