Volume 4 Chapter 2 Safety Confirmation From Class Teacher

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

In the middle of winter, New York starts getting dark around 4:30 PM, and by 6 PM, the sky is completely black, and it gets even colder. Despite this, I decided to go out with Risa-san to grab some food.

(If it’s this cold in December, what will January and February be like?)

New York’s winter looks a lot different from what I’ve seen in pictures and magazines.

I know about the bright Christmas decorations, but I didn’t realize how strong and cold the wind is between the buildings. In some places, it’s even colder than at the airport.

Risa-san laughed and said, “If we wait until Christmas, we’ll freeze!” She took me to a nearby department store in Madison Town before we got to the hotel. She bought me a hooded down coat, so at least I was okay to go outside.

I knew I’d be eating out while staying at the hotel, so I didn’t change into casual clothes when I got to my room; I stayed in my uniform.

I put on my coat and left the room with Risa-san. As we walked through the hotel lobby, I got a call from my school on my phone.

 ”Hello?”

’Ah, finally got through! It’s not just ‘hello’! I’ve been worried since I couldn’t reach you since yesterday!’

As expected, it was my teacher calling. I told Risa-san it was from school and moved to a corner of the lobby.

”Sorry. I’m alive, so you don’t need to worry.”

’Okay, that’s good. By the way, the deadline for submitting the extra job application you wanted is today. What are you going to do?’

That made me realize I was supposed to be job hunting. So much has happened since yesterday that it feels like a long time ago.

 ”I’m good.”

’Huh? What do you mean, ‘I’m good’?’

”I’m not in Japan right now. I’m in a place where I can’t do anything anyway.”

’What are you talking about? Where are you?’

”Um, I’m in America. Manhattan, New York.”

’What!? No way! You’re joking, right?’

”I’m serious. If you want, I can send a postcard or letter to school from here.”

I figured I’d probably be back in Japan before any mail got to the school, but I could prove I wasn’t lying.

’Why are you there? Did something happen with your guardians?’

 ”No, it’s not that.”

’Then are you chasing after some blonde, big-chested beauty?’

I looked at Risa-san standing next to me. She’s a bit chubby and cute, and I won’t deny she has a nice figure, but she’s not blonde. Risa-san asked quietly, “Is something wrong?” so I shook my head and said, “It’s nothing.”

’Hey, I’m just joking. You should react! Silence is the worst!’

It seemed my teacher thought his joke fell flat.

”Ah, sorry. After I graduate, I thought I’d stay here for a while to find out what I really want to do. So, I came here to look for a place to live since I’m not job hunting anymore.”

I really wanted to find out what job I’d like to do while living here with Risa-san and our future child, even if I eventually go back to Japan.

’Well, if you’ve thought it through, that’s fine.’

I told my surprised teacher that it looked like school would be closed for the rest of the year, and then we ended the call.

 ”Thank you, Risa-san. Let’s go.”

 ”Okay.”

We walked to a restaurant that wasn’t too far from the hotel.

 ”Hey, Shuu.”

Risa-san’s breath turned into a white mist in the cold air.

”I think it’s good to look for what you really want to do since life is pretty long. I had a classmate who did that. After graduating high school, they spent 3 years doing what they wanted to do and having fun, and then they went to a university that would lead to the job they wanted. I don’t have that kind of courage, so I can’t do it, but honestly, I’m a bit jealous.”

Even though we could talk in a warm place, I watched Risa-san trying hard to share her feelings with me in this cold. After chasing after her so impulsively, I felt more certain than ever that I hadn’t made a mistake.

I don’t think I’m going to college. I’ve been busy making enough money to live, taking care of things, and dealing with a lot since my parents are gone.

Now that I can take a break and slow down, I feel like I can finally see my future, which I almost lost sight of.
