Volume 3 Chapter 67 Yashiro Family Personal Interview (Youngsters Class)
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
While sitting in a cube chair less than thirty centimeters high, the back of Suu-chan’s head was right in front of me. Her hair had turned into a total bird’s nest thanks to some aggressive play-wrestling, so I began to run a comb through it. I removed the hair ties from her braids and slowly worked through the tangles hanging over her shoulders, starting from the tips and gradually moving up toward the roots. I moved gently, following the instructions I received from Mio-san to the letter to avoid damaging her scalp or the cuticles.
”(Suu-chan, does that hurt?)” I asked in a whisper, leaning close to her ear. She shrugged her shoulders as if it tickled, then turned around and beckoned for me to lean closer, making a little funnel with both her hands.
”(It’s okay… I like it when Maa-kun does my hair)…” She let out a silly little “Ehehe!” and turned back around, silently commanding me to keep going. As you wish.
Beside us, the Yashiro family interview began. “Next, regarding Makoto-kun…” Riko said. Since my Mother is working on weekdays, the Totsuka family usually looks after me, so they were sitting in on the meeting as well.
”He is so dependable that it’s hard to believe he’s in the Youngsters Class¹,” Riko added, causing the adults to chuckle. “He’s been that way since he enrolled. When it comes to taking care of himself, there’s absolutely nothing to complain about. Honestly, there’s no room for us teachers to even lend a hand.”
The teachers explained that whether it was during lessons or playtime, I usually took a step back to watch what the other children were doing first. They suspected I was observing them to figure out the best way to succeed. Because I have a good memory and I’m relatively dexterous, I pick up almost everything immediately. Afterward, just like Suzuki-chan, I set an example or offer subtle support to the kids who look like they’re struggling.
”As for his social life—I’m sure you mothers already know—but it’s quite something,” the teacher continued. “He has many friends and communicates smoothly with children from other grades without a hint of hesitation. He’s attentive, kind, and reliable, so it’s no wonder all the kids look up to him. He has a great reputation among the other parents, too. In fact, whenever a parent asks their child what happened at kindergarten, Makoto-kun’s name almost always comes up. And he is strangely good at keeping the rowdy kids in line… though, personally, he seems to prefer watching from the sidelines rather than being the center of attention. He noticed small details that you wouldn’t expect from a student his age, and he’s helped us out quite a bit… so, thank you.”
The two teachers bowed their heads slightly, and Mother and the others returned the gesture. Mio-san shot me a smirk. It almost looked like she was delighted to have found someone of her own kind. (They really see quite a lot, don’t they…) I never caused the teachers any trouble, so the time I actually spent interacting with them should have been much shorter compared to the other kids.
I wasn’t sure about “evaluating an evaluation,” but for me, I thought this was within a safe, ordinary range. Although, since my parents were right there, there was a good chance the teacher was being extremely selective with her words. I’ve certainly tried my best to blend in. I got pretty panicked when the neighborhood started buzzing with rumors about me being a “child prodigy².” Sure, I could have acted all cool and superior by using the “adult composure” from my previous life, but I’m not such a glutton for punishment that I’d go out of my way to strangle my own neck.
The current me is just using a reincarnation cheat; I’ve gained almost nothing through actual growth. If people expect too much of me, I’ll likely hit a wall before long, and I don’t have the courage to show my limits just yet. Of course, I couldn’t bring myself to treat the other kids coldly, and because Suu-chan is so cute I ended up being a bit overprotective, which has made my social standing a little weird… regardless, for now, this is a time to build my strength. Human connections are a form of power, too, and they aren’t exactly something I can hide.
I finished combing Suu-chan’s hair and started making new braids, telling myself exactly that.
”Also, there is just one concern regarding Makoto-kun…” Riko said hesitantly. My heart gave a throb. Is there really something to worry about? (Oh, wait, is it about how I get unstable whenever Suu-chan isn’t around? Well, that can’t be helped…)
”He’s such a considerate child that he always ends up prioritizing the other children. He never acts spoiled or throws tantrums at kindergarten. While that’s a huge help for us, we worry if he’s repressing himself. How is he at home? I hope he’s able to vent his frustrations properly.”
At the teacher’s concern, Mio-san and Mother looked at each other, then turn their eyes toward me. It’s true that acting like a kindergartner while dealing with a bunch of kids is exhausting, but after a year, I’ve mostly gotten used to it. I don’t feel like I’m pushing myself too hard. Pushing aside actual toddlers to get my way would actually make me feel worse. More than anything, I have the ultimate source of healing right here. (The only thing I haven’t been able to vent is my libido. So, that’s not exactly something a kindergarten teacher needs to worry about.)
For now, I just tilted my head in confusion, just like Suu-chan does.
”Let’s see… when he’s at our house, it’s much the same,” Mio-san said. “He’s usually prioritizing whatever Suzuki wants to do. But he seems to enjoy that himself.” (Yeah, I do. Playing with Suu-chan makes time just melt away. Except for when we play “dress-up doll,” that’s a bit much…)
”He doesn’t seem to be holding anything back at home, either,” Mother added. “He tells me plenty of stories about kindergarten, and he never seemed to have trouble talking about things.”
Hearing that, Riko looked relieved. “Makoto just doesn’t act spoiled when he’s out in public…” Mother continued.
”Is that so?” Riko asked.
”Yes, he becomes quite the little pampered baby when we’re at home,” Mother said.
”I guess Mom is special after all, then!” Riko replied, wearing an expression as if she’d discovered a surprising new side of me.
Actually, I’m mostly just responding to Mother’s physical affection³. The morning hugs, the kisses before I leave… well, I don’t hate it. Besides, even if I tried to act spoiled with anyone else, I’d probably be blocked.
”Mmph!” Suu-chan huffed proudly.
(Ugh…) Not unless I can break through Suu-chan’s total blockade.
After that, Mother asked a few more things about daily life at the kindergarten, and Riko peppered them with questions about our home environment. Between my review and the Totsuka family’s, it took a little over thirty minutes. The year-end progress review ended peacefully. Also, it looked like Riko was personally exchanging contact info with the mothers. I wonder if it’s okay for them to make personal connections like that? For us, it’s great to have more people we can rely on, but…

—
Character Insight:
Makoto and his mother share a moment of ‘spoiled’ intimacy, which he admits he doesn’t hate, showing he’s gradually accepting his new life’s emotional roles. Meanwhile, Suu-chan’s possessiveness is framed as a ‘total blockade’ on his affection for others.
—
Lore And Worldbuilding Context:
The ‘Youngsters Class’ (Nenshou) corresponds to the 3-4 year old age group in the Japanese education system, setting the timeline for Makoto’s current age.
—
TL Notes:
The term ‘skinship’ was localized to ‘physical affection’ for better immersion, as it is a pseudo-English term (Wasei-eigo) that lacks the same nuance in native US English.
