Volume 14 Chapter 13 As A King
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
After we started talking about reconnaissance, the Dragonewts kept up their regular scouting runs even after the big attack. That’s how we found out──the ‘another world monsters’ are already fixing the factory we trashed.
And fast, too.
Really, really fast.
”My subordinates are continuing the reconnaissance, and the latest intel says they’ve started repairing the factory. There’s also a huge force of ‘another world monsters’ around it now, so getting close is quickly becoming impossible.”
As Ludmila gave her report, everyone in the hall started shifting and looking at each other, mumbling and tense.
The folks who thought breaking the factory would buy us time──who figured we’d dodged that whole ‘monster swarm’ crisis──looked like their brains were short-circuiting when they realized the enemy could just patch things up.
Honestly, I was in the same boat. We went all out wrecking that place, so I figured we could chill, at least for a while. But now that it turns out they can fix it all super quick… Yeah, I’m freaking out too.
”Look, at this pace, the factory’s gonna be back to full power in half a month. If we leave them alone for a couple months? Production goes through the roof, and then we’re monster chow. Us, on the menu. Congrats to us, right? This is what you call a doomed ending flag.”
After Lina dropped that bad news, people all around started sighing. The whole room just got heavier.
Like the air itself was groaning. From the way everyone reacted when they heard about us wrecking the factory, I could tell──most of them were pinning their hopes on just blasting the ‘another world monsters’ to bits with good timing.
But now… Enemy’s got repair skills. On top of that, insane production power. So yeah, like Lina said, if you call this “game over flag raised,” you’re not even exaggerating.
”Mr. Kent… This isn’t just a problem for the Margrave South District, you know. If we ignore ‘another world monster’ here, they’ll swarm straight to Abyss Vena. So, we must set up Felward Fortress as the front line and Nirei Fortress as the defense line, and mobilize the army. All we can do in the meantime is wait for reinforcements from other countries. This isn’t something our country can handle alone.”
Lina’s words were met with silence, but then she stood up and proposed a strategy loud enough for everyone in the room to hear.
She argued that the situation had already surpassed what the Margrave South District could handle alone, emphasizing the urgent need for foreign aid.
Kondrad, a military leader, stood up in surprise at her suggestion.
”Chancellor Lila! I can’t accept inviting another country’s army into our homeland! Even if they’re from the True Demon Kingdom or the Eastern Chiefdom, our allies, I can’t risk what they might do! As the military’s leader, I cannot approve your plan!”
Kondrad’s anger couldn’t be contained as he shouted towards the Mother-in-law.
Normally a calm old man, Kondrad’s fury was understandable; one wrong move could turn the Demon Continent into a place where no one could live.
From a soldier’s pride, relying on another country’s army was nothing but humiliation, but with no room for error in this battle, he felt it was too dangerous to let pride or face get in the way, and decided to intervene.
”Mother-in-law, Kondrad, don’t let emotions get the better of you. I’m sorry, but this time I’m gonna have to use the king’s authority. I’ve decided that unless we ask for help from the Demon Continent countries to wipe out the ‘another world monsters’ from the Abyss Gate and seal the crack in time and space, we can’t ensure our country’s safety. Kondrad, I’m letting the Demon Continent armies into Margrave South District. If something goes wrong, just blame it all on me!”
”Lord Kent!! If we let foreign armies stay in our country, which just finished a southern campaign, we’ll be conquered! Please reconsider!”
”No can do. I’m sorry, but I can’t back down. What’s the point of having a country if it turns into a land where ‘another world monsters’ roam free? I’d rather bring in other countries’ armies to wipe them out.”
Murmurs spread across the hall.
It seems they didn’t expect me to use such strong-arm tactics to fight the ‘another world monsters.’
”If Kent’s gone this far, he’s not gonna back down. Kondrad, you give up too.”
”Bu-!”
”No way. No one can stop Kent once he’s made up his mind, right? Besides, soldiers are here to protect the people, not to give up. Do your job for your salary.”
Milly also started to persuade the stubborn Kondrad to give in.
It might be selfish of me, but if it’s about the lives of everyone on the Demon Continent, being made a fool of as a king is a small price to pay.
”…Understood. But will the other countries’ armies actually help us seal the Abyss Gate within our borders?”
”I’m not sure… but I plan to head to Capital City and have His Majesty Shifa gather all the kings for an emergency strategy meeting. Until then, we have to hold back the enemies from the other world at the Abyss Gate with our own forces. The exact number of enemies is unknown, but we need to keep their numbers from growing. I’ll send out squads from Felward Fortress to take them out one by one. I want everyone who can fight, soldiers and Monster Hunters alike, to lend a hand. Of course, we’ll make sure there’s plenty of support and healing. This time, it’s my whim, so I’ll cover all the costs with Blackdagger family assets.”
I intended to pay for the expenses of this ‘other world monster’ extermination campaign with the Blackdagger family fortune.
I could have asked Helga to pull funds from the national treasury, but with the costs of the southern campaign and building new towns, I didn’t want to add more burden.
Considering the sheer number of ‘other world monsters,’ the war expenses would be enormous, but I wanted to protect my reality at any cost.
”…If Mr. Kent has made such a decision, we, as his subjects, must support him with all our might.”
When my Mother-in-law addressed the crowd in the hall, applause erupted from the gathered people.
”Long live King Kent! Long live the Margrave of the South District! Wooooo! Long live!”
Originally, the people of the South District love to fight, and many find their purpose in combat. So when they heard that a big war was starting, they were fired up and ready to go.
Thus, I decided to defeat the ‘other world monsters’ and seal the Abyss Gate, and then I set off towards Shifa in Capital City.
