Volume 14 Chapter 5 Sanctuary Village Rescue Operation, Part II

”Whoa, that’s some power, Delprius… But this should slow the enemy down. Everyone, let’s take them out in one swoop!”

 ””””Yeah!!!””””

The big ‘another world monster’, already wounded by Delprius’s [Dragonic Laser], was now being shredded by Milly’s team’s wave of attacks, bleeding out drop by drop until it stopped moving.

Some were still putting up a fight, but one by one, the ‘another world monsters’ at the southern entrance were dropping dead.

Then, after a few minutes, the southern entrance was a mountain of ‘another world monster’ corpses.

”Phew, we managed to push them back… Maybe we should take a quick break…”

”Milly, sorry to rush you, but we don’t have time to relax. New monsters are swarming in from the Abyss Gate. There’s over a thousand of them, medium-sized and large! We can’t hold them off with our current strength, so we’re starting the evacuation.”

As Dee’s stamina ran out and her Dragon Transformation wore off, I landed on the ground, ready for a quick breather after the intense combat.

I informed Milly’s team about the new monsters approaching and immediately gave the order to prepare for evacuation.

”Eh, oh no! We’ve never had so many ‘another world monsters’ appear before. It really seems like the barrier is breaking… Everyone, you might be tired, but we need to evacuate.”

”Meet at the square. The other teams should be withdrawing too.”

 ”Got it. Everyone, move out!”

After the long battle, the steps of the exhausted Crimson Bride were noticeably heavier.

* * *

We returned to the village square with the tired Milly and her team, and the Black Bullet members had finished their withdrawal too.

The villagers had already evacuated on the Dragonewts, leaving just us, the Black Bullet team, and the village head, Valentina.

”Just as I thought, those ‘another world monsters’ are targeting the barrier devices… The strong enemy concentrations in the south must be because of the facility nearby. If the barrier falls, our connection with the other world through the Abyss Gate will expand. That means even more ‘another world monsters’ than the ones that attacked today could swarm the South District.”

Valentina’s already pale face had turned deathly white.

She’s probably on edge, knowing that the barrier facility her ancestors protected is on the brink of destruction.

Given the current situation, with this many ‘another world monsters’ pouring out of the Abyss Gate, it’s hard to deny that the Arsella Dorman barrier is failing.

The barrier might be broken already, the Abyss Gate possibly merged with the other world itself.

We need to mobilize a new Reconnaissance Unit to confirm that… At the worst, we could end up with a land where beast monsters, the result of breeding with these monsters, roam freely.

 We can’t let that happen…

”About that, we’ll send out a Reconnaissance Unit after we escape. This is a serious situation for the Margrave of the South District too, you know.”

”…Please let me join the investigation as well. If we’re lucky, we might find a way to close the Abyss Gate.”

Valentina was volunteering to join the Reconnaissance Unit.

Taking Valentina, whose combat abilities were unknown, would be risky.

But with her knowledge as the manager of the Arsella Dorman barrier, it might be possible to find a clue to sealing the greatest risk to the Margrave South District country──the Abyss Gate.

”…Let me think about it. For now, we retreat to Felward Fortress.”

”Understood. I’m counting on you──please take care of it.”

”Kent!! New enemies just smashed through the barricade. We have to move──now! Get on the Dragonewt, quick!!”

From the north entrance, Black Bullet’s team opens fire on the ‘another world monsters’ trying to break in.

”Use up the Beast Monster’s Hammer──Rapid Hammer──no holding back! Target them! Fire!!”

At Kerstin’s command, the Beast Monster’s Hammer──Rapid Hammer──slams into the flood of ‘another world monsters’ pushing in.

The lead monsters barely make it a step──then they explode, giant holes punched through their guts.

I heft Elitzina and start shooting down any monster that gets close.

”I’ll hold the rear with Black Bullet. Crimson Bride, Valentina──you fall back now! Go! Move!”

”I’m leaving it to you, Kent. But once we’re back in Felward, you’d better spoil me rotten, okay?”

Milly trusted me, just nodded, and didn’t fight about staying behind.

”Oh, don’t worry. I’ll absolutely ruin you in Felward. I’ve been holding back this entire fight, you know. Hope your legs can handle it.”

Milly grinned and hopped into the Dragonewt’s basket.

The other concubines looked downright wicked, all of them smirking the same way.

 I know that look.

They’re already daydreaming about my ‘rewards’ for them.

The Dragonewt carrying Milly and the others took off from the square.

The rest of us kept firing, holding back the oncoming monsters.

”Kent, you’re not thinking of forgetting our reward too, right?”

Even as she fired, Kerstin shot me a sly little smile.

The rest of Black Bullet was supposed to be on high alert──but every single ear in the squad was tuned in, hanging on my answer.

”C’mon, you bastards! All of you, bring it on! Even if you’re shaking so bad you can’t stand──tough! I’m not letting a single one of you die today! We all go back, got it?”

 ”””You got it!!”””

The Black Bullet crew had nearly lost their nerve, but now… you could see the fight coming back into their eyes.

Still, we were pushing our luck──just couldn’t hold out any longer.

One by one, I shoved them into the Dragonewt’s transport basket.

And finally, after I hopped in, the Dragonewt took off with a huge beat of its wings.

 ”We’re busting out! Lift off──GO!”

If we’d stayed one second longer, that swarm of otherworld monsters would’ve ripped us to shreds.

We barely made it out alive.

”Too bad for you losers. Guess you’ll have to cry about it in the afterlife.”

Then, I slammed the switch on the box packed with wide-area attack magic tools, all stacked up in the square.

Fire exploded up, swallowing every last monster crowding the square, wiping out the entire village──like nothing was ever there.

The facility that kept up Arsella Dorman’s barrier?

That vanished in the flames too.
