Volume 14 Chapter 53 A Frail Wish
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
The monstrous creature, now resurrected, glared at us with eyes glowing an eerie green. The giant, transformed into Iska and already a formidable foe, had fled. If we didn’t chase it down immediately, it’d escape this sealed space and reach Grimoire.
However, the two enemies before us were fierce, and taking them to the gate risked unleashing even more terrifying creatures, including these two, into Grimoire.
There was no time to hesitate. I had to make a quick decision. I ordered Milly and the others to chase after the fleeing giant while I stayed behind to hold off the enemies.
”Milly, I’ll stall them here. You go after that giant! Black Bullet and Black Wing should be near the gate, and we can expect reinforcements from the South District army. Make sure it doesn’t escape, no matter what.”
”But if we do that, Kent will die! They can only be harmed through healing, and you have no way to stop them. We can’t just leave you behind!”
As expected, Milly refused my plan. The others remained silent, but their determination to stay was clear.
”Sorry, Milly… It’s a master order. Please, chase after the giant first. I promise I’ll catch up.”
In response to my command, Milly silently drew the Black Dagger of the Dream Demon Clan, a symbol of our bond that I always kept close.
”Milly… What are you doing? Hurry and go. Please.”
”I can’t. I won’t follow a master order if it means leaving you. Even if it means breaking our promise, even if I lose my position as your legitimate wife, or if you revoke my ownership, I don’t care. As Miriallia, I will never leave your side! Whether as the Dream Demon clan leader, your wife, or under any contract, none of it matters. I will stay with you!”
”Milly…”
The others shared Milly’s resolve, but one person remained calm, assessing the situation.
That person was Valentina. She seemed to grasp the danger of the giant reaching Grimoire.
”I’ll chase after the giant. If I meet Ms. Delprius or Ms. Kerstin, I’ll tell them to fortify the gate’s defenses to prevent the giant’s escape.”
Sending only Valentina, the weakest fighter, after the giant felt risky.
”Tch, it’s too dangerous for Valentina to go alone. Big sister, Talia, Ms. Flamil, and Master Carlamia are out of magic and would only slow her down. I’ll go with Valentina to secure a retreat for Kent and the others.”
The silver-haired twin-tailed tsundere girl, Lina, understood the need to support Valentina. Since she could read my thoughts, she likely sensed my worry and decided to take charge.
”But leaving Mr. Kent…”
”Yeah, leaving our god behind…”
”Idiots!! If we all die here, that monster will escape, right? All our sacrifices would be for nothing! Besides, Kent’s lucky—he’ll survive. After all, the top Hunter of Abyss Vena, no, the entire Demon Continent, is protecting him. Big Sister Milly, if Kent doesn’t come back, you’ll get my God Hand massage forever!”
Carlamia and Lana, scolded by Lina, looked down, dejected.
”Sir Kent! We’re moving!”
”Lina, sorry. Leave it to me.”
”Lina, I’ll bring Kent back safely, no matter what! You handle things there. Once everyone’s safe, I’ll certify you for the Holy God Hand massage.”
”Muhaa! Big Sister Milly, please come back alive!”
Led by Lina, tempted by the Holy God Hand massage certification, the magic class members, including Valentina, rushed back along the giant’s path.
I hope they make it in time. The gate area should be fortified by the army, and the Top Three Hunting Group should be there too. Escaping won’t be easy for the giant.
After Lina and the others left, I turned to face the fully recovered aberrant creature. Its face trembled, and Iska’s features emerged.
’Kent… Kent… let’s be together. Here, no one will disappear. Look, Rosalinda and Heta are here too.’
Though the creature resembled Iska, Rosalinda and Heta’s faces appeared from different spots, their expressions filled with anguish.
”Don’t use their voices and faces!”
Seeing Iska’s voice and face, and Rosalinda and Heta’s images, my anger surged. Without thinking, I aimed Elitzina at the creature and fired.
Tatatatatat.
The bullets from Elitzina shattered against the creature’s tough skin. I knew ordinary bullets couldn’t harm it—its skin was annoyingly, dangerously resilient.
”Kent, stay calm. They’re mocking us, knowing we’re weakened. We must fight calmly or we’ll fall apart.”
Milly remained composed, suppressing her anger to keep her promise of bringing me back safely.
As the creature’s burning glare continued, the collapsing space began crushing the building. Time was running out.
If this kept up, I’d be left behind in this space.
Distracted by the creaking building, I looked away from the grotesque creature, and it launched a sudden assault. It spread its wings, shooting beams of light that formed a web, pushing toward us.
”Sir Kent! It’s dangerous!”
Annabella, in battered armor and holding a damaged shield, held back the web of light. But her shield heated up and began to melt.
”Annabella, step back!”
”If I move, Sir Kent──”
I ordered Annabella to retreat as her shield melted, but she refused, determined to protect me.
”Ms. Annabella, I’ll help you! IneIne, let’s go!”
Feria and Ines, re-equipped with weapons, charged at the creature. Ines swung her axe with full force, but it barely scratched the thick skin, sliding off.
As Ines lost her balance and fell, the creature lunged, biting her throat. Ines instantly transformed into liquid metal, absorbed by the creature.
”Ines!!!”
The attack was too fast for anyone to intervene. Ines was consumed in an instant.
”IneIne!!”
Enraged by Ines’s absorption, Feria began chanting Divine Magic, using her life force, but a claw interrupted her.
”Damn it! Give back IneIne! You primary-colored monster! My eyes are stinging──”
Her anger and Ines’s loss disrupted Feria’s focus. Her attack became reckless, and the creature struck her, knocking away her weapon. Defenseless, she was bitten, transforming into liquid metal and absorbed like Ines.
