Volume 14 Chapter 55 Iska’s Awakening

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

 *Iska’s Perspective

”Iska… Wake up. How long are you going to sleep? Wake up already.”

Someone whispered to me while I was having a nice dream. It was a dream where I lived happily every day with Kent, Rosalinda, Ms. Milly, and everyone else. It was so fun that time flew by. In the dream, Kent and I even had a cute little boy, and I was very happy.

Even now, when I was called, I didn’t want to wake up from this life, even though I knew it was just a dream. As long as I stayed here, I could be with the people I loved, spending my days happily without feeling alone or getting strange looks from others.

If I listened to the whispering voice, everything would change. I would be pulled back to a world without Rosalinda and Heta. And it was likely I wouldn’t see Kent or Milly either.

The faint connection, made by the brain monster I called my sibling, had taken in Kent and the others. Now, they were being recreated as Kent and Milly in the world I was in.

It was a small world, but for me, it was perfect.

As long as I stayed here, no one would hurt me, and I could be happy forever with everyone.

”So, are you okay? Are you really happy being stuck in this fake, prison-like world?”

The whispering voice seemed annoyed that I wasn’t listening. But I didn’t feel any need to go back to that world. The voice was just annoying noise to me.

Suddenly, the child Kent and I were holding started to cry. The child was of the same species as me, and Kent had given them a name. They were so cute, and I loved them so much that even if I gave them everything, it still wouldn’t be enough.

”Why are you crying? I just fed you, right? You shouldn’t be making such a sound. Come on, smile.”

The child screamed, and just as I thought they would cry even louder, their face fell apart. The flesh rotted away, and they turned into a skeleton. Kent and Milly, who were nearby, also turned into skeletons.

”Iska… didn’t you say you would live for me? Why are you wandering around in a place like this?”

Rosalinda, who should have been smiling beside me, had half her face fallen off. Her eyes hung down as if they were going to fall off. The paradise we had just experienced had turned into a nightmare.

”I thought you would live for me too when I died. It’s disappointing to see you living comfortably in a place like this.”

Heta also approached me with a pale face, dragging his insides along. I knew everything was a trick created by the ‘another world monster’ leader, but I wanted to stay like that. However, the whispering voice used Heta and Rosalinda’s voices to force me back from paradise to reality.

”This is the real world. Wake up. You’re our last hope.”

The whispering voice belonged to Vanquish, who had been living in my soul. Once sealed in a pendant, a keepsake from my mother, by the Demon Lord Orphée Bleu, she had always been my friend—the longest relationship I had.

She chose to stay with my soul until I died instead of merging with Manon, another creation of Orphée Bleu. She didn’t appear much after the soul fusion, but since the ‘another world monster’ leader took over, she had been whispering like before.

”Why… why destroy my paradise… I don’t want to go back to that place… there’s only pain there…”

”It might be painful for you to go back, but that doesn’t mean living a fake life here is what Rosalinda and the others wanted. And Kent and Milly are only captured; they’re not dead yet.”

 ”But… I can’t beat that monster…”

Even the Elite Troops’ Monster Hunters, including Kent and Ms. Milly, couldn’t defeat that creature. And even if I fought it alone, the result was already clear.

Vanquish should have seen the battle between Kent and the end Beast Monster, but I didn’t understand why she would say such a hard thing.

”I know it sounds bad. But how can you be okay with hiding and escaping when Kent is about to die?”

 ”Escaping… it’s not like that.”

”Then, instead of just complaining here, save Kent with your power. If you want to, I’ll help. What will you do? Will you try? Or not?”

 ”Save Kent? Me?”

I didn’t get what Vanquish meant. I’m just a consciousness now, taken by that creature, so why would she want me to do this? It felt pointless.

”Yes, you will save him. I’ll let myself be taken by him as a distraction. While he’s busy, you take back your body and the others. It’s a one-time chance, and if you don’t do it right, I’ll die for nothing. Well, I’m already dead once, though.”

”If Vanquish gets taken by it… what happens?”

”I’ll be absorbed, and I think I can weaken its power a bit. And if you and the others leave, its power will get weaker. Then, if you and Kent can stop this creature with me, that would be best. We can start over. For me, it’s a good ending.”

 ”Can we really do that?”

I was shocked by Vanquish’s words. The one who said she’d stay with me until the end was trying to help me and Kent by giving her own soul as a distraction.

At first, I wanted to free the trapped souls quickly, but I thought they were happy being with me, so this was surprising.
