Volume 2 Chapter 41 Magician And Healer

I slowly unfolded the rolled-up paper with trembling hands.
The characters written inside wriggled around, making them difficult to read.
”The characters are moving and hard to read…”
”Lord Kent, if you concentrate your mind on the characters, they should stop moving.”
Taking Cefiro’s advice, I focused my mind again and looked at the characters in front of me.
For a moment, they still swayed, but eventually, they stopped moving, and I was able to read the characters.
”Oh… gathered… magic element… shine… no… become light… and illuminate the darkness… torch!”
I managed to read it, but there was no sign of magic activating.
Could it be that I have no talent… how embarrassing… I feel like going home and locking myself in my room.
”Kent! Your voice is too quiet! If you don’t read it confidently and with your chest out, magic won’t activate! Don’t underestimate magic!”
Lina’s words of encouragement flew at me.
I see, so it won’t activate unless I raise my voice.
I took a deep breath and read the magic incantation at the top of my lungs once more.
”Gather magic element! Become light and illuminate the darkness! Torch!”
As I felt something leave my body, a bright glowing sphere appeared in front of me.
I grabbed the sphere and exploded with joy.
”I did it! I did it! Mr. Cefiro, I passed, right? This is definitely activated!”
I proudly showed the activated sphere to Cefiro.
”Yes, it is activated. Lord Kent has passed.”
──Job acquired [Magician].
──Skill point 1 point acquired.
──Job bonus: increased magic capacity.
──Attack Magic I has been unlocked.
──Body Enhancement Magic I has been unlocked.
──Support Magic I has been unlocked.
──Stealth Magic I has been unlocked.
With Cefiro’s declaration of passing, I was able to acquire the job, and the magic that could be learned with the Magician talent was unlocked, but for now, I decided not to acquire any since I still had few points.
”Kent, you really did have the talent after all. You should have taken the test sooner.”
Lina says that, but the reason I hesitated to take the test in the first place was because of her comment about how “Lost Ones might not have the talent for magic in this world.”
But since I did have the talent, I might as well be happy about it.
”Well, I’m glad I did. If I hadn’t, I would probably be home right now, hiding away.”
”Again with the negative talk.”
Cefiro approached us as we were joking around and began to speak.
”Congratulations on acquiring the Magician job. By the way, the Magician Guild assigns ranks to Magicians, so once Lord Kent has learned some magic, I recommend taking the Magician certification test.”
I asked Cefiro about this Magician certification test he mentioned.
”Why is it recommended to take it?”
”If you increase your rank, you’ll get discounts on magic composition documents, a pension, and you’ll also be able to take on apprentices. So if you plan to make Magician your main job, it would be worth it.”
”By the way, I obtained the title of [True Magic Master] as a B-rank Magician in the certification test, so I can take on apprentices and I have a title too.”
I never imagined that Lina was such a high-ranking Magician.
Her title must be “Flame User.”
”Lina’s title is ‘Flame User,’ right?”
”Yes, that’s right. Did I tell you, Kent?”
I understood that the Magician certification test is a highly beneficial test for those aiming to become Magicians.
After that, we thanked Cefiro and left the Magician Guild.

Next, we headed to the clinic.
When Lana informed the receptionist that we had arrived, the director, Werner, rushed in immediately.
”Lord Kent! Which girl would you like today… Recently, the apprentice Veris was also taken to Lord Kent’s mansion… Please spare us any more.”
Werner, a man in his late fifties with graying black hair slicked back, was bowing deeply to me, his thin body giving off a strong impression of a hunchback.
I hurriedly helped Werner to his feet.
It seems that whenever I come to the clinic, people assume it’s for some kind of extraction.
”Director Werner, today is different. Mr. Kent is going to take the Healer certification exam, so I brought him along.”
”W-what did you say! Lord Kent is going to take the Healer certification exam…? But wasn’t it said that Lord Kent had no magic aptitude?”
Since Werner doesn’t know that I passed the magic certification exam, he still thinks I have no aptitude.
”Mr. Werner, Kent has passed the magic certification exam. Therefore, he meets the qualifications to take the Healer certification exam.”
”However, we can’t let someone with no treatment experience or practical skills take the Healer certification exam… This is a matter of life and death.”
Indeed, Healing Magic is different from other types of magic in that it involves human lives.
I had thought it would be an easy exam like the magic certification exam, but it seems the barriers are unexpectedly high.
”Mr. Kent is my disciple. Under my authority as his master, I will have him take the Healer certification exam, so Director Werner, please make the necessary arrangements.”
Seeing Lana assertively instructing Werner, I couldn’t tell who was really in charge.
”But there are no test subjects. There’s no way anyone would volunteer for such an unprecedented Healer certification exam!”
Werner exclaimed, his hair disheveled as he protested.
Even I would refuse if someone asked me to give them an injection without any medical knowledge or experience.
”I will be the test subject, so please don’t worry.”
Lana pointed to herself and declared that she would be the test subject.
”W-what! Do you even understand your own position? You are the eldest daughter of the Dorman family!”
”If anything happens, my father will take responsibility, so Director Werner will have no liability whatsoever. Therefore, I ask for your cooperation regarding the Healer certification exam.”
Lana deeply bowed her head to Werner.
”If you’re that determined, please feel free to proceed. Hey, bring me the First Aid scroll!”
Werner instructed a nearby Healer to bring the scroll.
Lina and I watched their exchange in bewilderment.
”Now then, Mr. Kent, may I borrow this space to begin the Healer certification exam?”
Lana pulled my hand and led me into a room in the clinic, with Lina following behind.
”Hey, are you serious, sister? I think it would be better to have someone else do this. Kent seems like he might mess up at a crucial moment.”
”It’s fine. Mr. Kent will definitely succeed.”
As we entered the treatment room, Werner came in holding the First Aid scroll.
”Lord Kent, if you fail to activate the magic, I will stop immediately and provide treatment, so please understand.”
”Ah, yes. Please do.”
I responded without really understanding.
”Now, I will begin the Healer certification exam.”
As Lana declared this, Werner pulled out a dagger from his pocket and cut Lana’s hand.
”Wha──! Mr. Werner, what are you doing!”
”Mr. Kent, could you please spread the First Aid scroll and activate the magic… it hurts quite a bit.”
Blood dripped from Lana’s hand, staining the treatment room floor.
The sight of the bright red blood made me feel nauseous, but I held back and tried to spread the First Aid scroll.
The characters written inside wobbled and were hard to read, just like during the magic certification exam earlier.
”Wait a minute, just a little longer.”
The sound of Lana’s blood dripping on the floor disrupted my concentration.
No good, I can’t concentrate.
I turned my face towards Werner.
”Mr. Kent, right now, you are the only one who can heal my wounds, so I won’t accept treatment from anyone else!”
Lana urged me to heal her.
Damn it, I thought I shouldn’t have taken this exam, but with a single-minded desire to help Lana, I began deciphering the magic incantation.
Thanks to Lana’s encouragement, I was able to concentrate, but I have no idea how much time it took.
Lana looked a bit pained, but when she saw my face, she smiled brightly.
Feeling uneasy, I placed my hand on the spot where Lana was injured and loudly read the magic incantation.
”Gather, magic element! Heal and close the wounds! First Aid!”
Green light started to leak from the tips of my fingers that were touching Lana’s wound, and the gaping cut on her hand began to close almost instantly.
With this, I should have stopped the bleeding.
”Lana, how do you feel? Can you move? And are you feeling fine?”
I bombarded Lana with questions in quick succession.
”Ahh, Mr. Kent’s First Aid felt so nice. Your magical power blended within me… just remembering it makes…”
Lana seemed to be in a dreamy state.
I started to feel uneasy, wondering if some dangerous component had mixed in.
But for now, it’s good that she’s okay.
”Lord Kent… please don’t think that such an unreasonable Healer certification exam happens all the time. Usually, it’s the ones with magical talent who have accumulated experience among assistants and nurses in the clinic that take the exam. This time, since you are Lord Kent, a Monster Hunter, keep in mind that this exam was an exception. By the director’s authority, I acknowledge Lord Kent’s passing of the Healer certification exam.”
──Job acquired [Healer].
──Skill point: 1 point acquired.
──Job bonus: Increased magical power.
──Healing Magic I has been unlocked.
──Barrier Magic I has been released.
With Werner’s approval, I got the job of Healer.
This was all thanks to Lana’s devotion, but when she returned from her trip, I gave her a forehead flick to warn her off.
”Lana, please don’t do that again. If I can’t activate it, Lana will die, so please don’t do it again”
”My forehead hurts, so please put some First Aid on it, Kent. If you don’t, I’ll do it again.”
Since Lana was unusually whining, I agreed to put some First Aid on her.
Seeing that, Lina deliberately pretended to fall and showed her scraped knee.
”Kent… it hurts… there’s blood, put some First Aid on it.”
I knew it was on purpose, but I silently applied the First Aid.
Thanks to acquiring the Magician and Healer classes, my blue mana bar didn’t decrease much.
After that, I greeted the seemingly eager Director Werner who wanted to get rid of us quickly, and while carrying Lana on my back and holding hands with Lina, we returned to the mansion just in time for lunch.
