Volume 5 Chapter 6 Major Reversal
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
”Now… Lord Blackdagger… I would like you to explain the meaning of Your Highness Delprius’s words…”
Rosvita summoned the Dragonewt species she was hunting, instructing them to surround me.
Her face had become expressionless, crossing beyond mere anger.
Behind Rosvita, Dragonewts around 5 meters tall were closing in, forming a wall.
She’s definitely angry… When did I unknowingly trigger a death flag…?
At this rate, depending on my response, I might be killed…
”Kent! Are you okay?! Ms. Rosvita, what in the world is happening?! What do you intend to do with Kent?”
Milly and the others sensed something was wrong and rushed to my side.
Seeing me surrounded by Dragonewts, they began to grip their weapons tightly.
A tense atmosphere began to envelop us.
”Milly, it’s fine. Everyone, lower your weapons. It’s just a slight miscommunication.”
”Well, if you say so… everyone, put your weapons away.”
Milly and the others reluctantly sheathed their weapons.
However, their hands remained ready to draw at any moment.
They must have witnessed the Dragonewts’ strength, yet they seemed prepared to risk their lives to save me.
Still, I don’t wish for them to rescue me at such a cost.
I want to live alongside them, not at the expense of their lives, seeking my own longevity.
I desperately think of a way to ease the situation.
Suddenly, a log message lit up.
──Job acquired: [Diplomat].
──Skill point: 1 point acquired.
──Job bonus: Intelligence increased.
──[Eloquence I] skill has been unlocked.
A new job was bestowed upon me in this desperate situation.
I hurriedly checked the details of the newly unlocked [Eloquence] skill.
[Eloquence I]… With a flick of the tongue, it can divert the topic and reduce an opponent’s hostility by 50%. Success rate 50%, consumes 5 Skill points.
A skill to divert hostility, huh… I might as well give it a shot…
──[Eloquence I] Skill acquired
I activated the Skill.
Then, a screen resembling a text box unfolded in the corner of my vision.
The previous exchanges, including the statement that sparked the issue, were displayed in the text box.
Gradually, some of the text in the box began to blink red.
Reading it, I understood what topic I needed to divert.
I see, I just need to make Rosvita attack that point!
I couldn’t help but grin at the displayed content.
However, with only a 50% success rate, I had no choice but to try.
”Ms. Rosvita, before explaining my relationship with Dee, shouldn’t we check with Mr. Clayd first? Why was Dee’s birth as a noblewoman kept hidden? And why did Lady Fabulanova not tell you, even her closest confidant?”
I could see a hint of doubt about Clayd rising on Rosvita’s previously expressionless face.
I was confident in the success of my Skill.
However, my plan crumbled like a house of cards.
”Such trivial matters can be thoroughly addressed later when we squeeze Clayd for answers. More importantly, I would like an explanation regarding Her Highness Delprius already being summoned to Lord Blackdagger’s chamber and receiving his favor. Depending on your response, we may have to resort to any means necessary to reclaim Her Highness Delprius.”
Clayd, the target of my topic diversion, looked momentarily shocked, but seemed relieved as Rosvita prioritized questioning me over him.
Damn old man!
The strongest banner of the True Demon Kingdom is a fraud!
You’re scared of Rosvita, aren’t you!
It seems Clayd has a fear of Rosvita, as the arrogant attitude he usually shows me had faded.
However, I couldn’t afford to focus on Clayd right now.
The situation was rapidly deteriorating.
”Well then, Lord Blackdagger!! I demand an explanation. Why does Your Highness Delprius refer to you as his concubine?”
Rosvita steps forward.
I can feel a heat radiating from my skin.
Earlier, I thought there was no way to block that beam with my physical barrier.
Am I really going to be turned to ash like this… I don’t want that!
In that case, I’ll pull off the biggest lie of my life!
To survive this situation, I decided to fabricate a story.
”Ah! It can’t be helped! If you’re going to say that, I’ll tell you. Your king, Lady Fabulanova, sent Mr. Clayd as a messenger to ask me for a loan. Dee was to enter my chamber as collateral for that loan. Normally, this isn’t something you, her subjects, should be privy to, but since my life is on the line, I’ll share it! Just be prepared for the king’s wrath!”
My words seemed to unsettle Rosvita and the others.
The Dragonewts began to murmur among themselves.
”…Impossible, we know the treasury is tight, but to think she would offer a daughter to Lord Blackdagger out of desperation… Ha, could it be that this development cost is…?”
Rosvita appeared troubled, as if she had realized something.
As the Black Dragon clan felt the stir of unease, a log message lit up.
──Job acquired [Cheatster] obtained.
──Skill point 1 point acquired.
──Job bonus intelligence increased.
──[Swindle] Skill has been unlocked.
A Cheatster job… Criminal… is it not?
It’s a shady job, but what is the [Swindle] Skill like?
[Swindle]… makes lies and fakes appear convincingly real to the target. Consumes 10 Skill points.
I guess I have no choice but to acquire this… Worst case, if I can just get through this scene, I should be able to erase it later.
There’s no time to hesitate.
──[Swindle] Skill acquired.
Activating the Skill, I quickly glance at Dee.
I need her to back up my lie with her words.
Dee, receiving my glance, seems to understand my intent.
”I have received orders from my mother to serve Kent. I am in Kent’s chamber due to a difficult decision for the sake of the Black Dragon Dukedom. And, the only thing I can do in the chamber is to bear Kent’s child, so I am devoted to that task. My mother likely did not want to cause unease among her vassals. Isn’t that right, father?”
”Dee… you…”
Clayd, addressed by Dee, is at a loss for words.
”Didn’t you say, Mr. Clayd, ‘I entrust my daughter to you’? And then you took a large sum of money and returned, right? Was that funding possibly for the resource development proposal brought by Rosvita this time?”
My words, empowered by the Skill, spread as convincing truths among Rosvita and the others.
The gazes of the Black Dragon clan turn toward Clayd.
”You idiot! I didn’t receive any such money! Rosvita! If you take this ridiculous story to Fabulanova, she will go into a rage!”
As Clayd desperately denies it, my story gains further credibility among the Black Dragon clan.
”B-but, Lord Blackdagger… is it truly the case that Her Highness Delprius was sold off to you?”
”Yes, she offered her daughter, whom she had hidden and raised for 16 years, for the sake of the Dukedom. Please understand Lady Fabulanova’s feelings, Ms. Rosvita.”
Under the influence of the [Swindle] Skill, Rosvita and the others came to perceive my words as truth, and some Dragonewts wept for Fabulanova, striking the ground and stomping in anguish.
