Volume 7 Chapter 8 The Lost Magic And The Relic Of The Demon Lord

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

I left the treasure clean-up to Annabella and the others. With Lina and Carly in tow, I headed out to an empty field on the outskirts to test out the Divine Magic and magic I’d acquired.

* * *

We arrived at the field, and Carly couldn’t wait.

She immediately started chanting, ready to unleash the magic at full power.

Magic elements dissolved in the air began to gather around Carly as she chanted, forming a black mist.

”Wow…the concentration of magic elements is insane…It’s definitely Advanced-level magic…”

”That’s right. The magic that me and Carly’s master use is Advanced-level magic, but it’s particularly mana-heavy. It’s a magic that’s said to be hard to create, with few mages who can even write the magic script. It’s even said to have been created by the Demon Lord Orphée Bleu in the beginning.”

Lina was explaining the magic next to me.

”So, it’s magic similar to the original Divine Magic?”

”Probably…I think so. But the mana consumption is definitely less than Divine Magic.”

Lina said even with this, she had modified the spell to reduce mana consumption considerably.

But, if someone from the Hunter Guild saw this, they’d say it’s too concentrated for use anywhere outside of a Hunting Ground.

If you used it repeatedly, it could severely harm the surrounding creatures and plants.

”Assembled magic elements (Mana)! Become a raging sandstorm and scatter my enemies! ‘Wind Chain’!!”

The moment Carly finished her chant, the black mist swirled, whipping up sand and pebbles. It immediately grew into a massive black tornado that ripped across the ground, sucking up anything in its path and shattering it.

The magic’s area of effect was wide, carving a groove about 50 meters across.

The distance it traveled was hard to estimate, but it seemed to be around 100 meters.

This is terrifying… If used in a dense area, it would be devastating…

”My master…I’ve used up a lot of mana…This is something I want to keep as a secret weapon.”

Carly’s face was pale as she downed a magic recovery potion, her voice trembling as she described the feel of the magic.

Even as an experienced A-rank magician and monster hunter, Carly’s mana seemed barely sufficient for the magic we had discovered.

”I thought so too,” I said, “I could feel a lot of mana being used. You’re holding back, aren’t you? And the influence on the surrounding magic elements is too strong.”

After Carly activated the magic, the released magic elements were still drifting around us.

”It is dense,” Carly agreed. “But let me try my magic too, okay? It should be fine.”

”Sure, I guess it’s all right since there are no houses around.”

Taking turns with Carly, Lina now began the incantation of the newly acquired magic.

Though her magician level was lower than Carly’s, Lina excelled in fire magic, and since her mentor had given permission, she had learned the volcanic lava flow (Magma Control) magic that was discovered this time.

This too was a lost magic, a spell recorded in the same ancient texts.

As Lina started her incantation, a black mist began to gather around her.

”Gather, magic elements (Mana)! Become searing lava and consume the obstacles before us!’Magma Control’!!”

At the activation, the Magic Stone embedded in her robe as a substitute for a protective charm shattered.

It seemed Lina’s mana was insufficient for the spell.

But thanks to the Magic Stone, the magic activated without going berserk.

The ground heaved as fiery red lava burst from the earth, engulfing everything within a 50-meter radius in front of us.

The lava flowed towards the direction Lina pointed.

Apparently, the lava could be controlled to flow wherever the caster willed.

”Phew, phew, that was dangerous. If I didn’t have the Magic Stone, it might have gone out of control… I thought I could use it since I obtained it, but I guess I still need the Magic Stone’s support with my mana… I really need to train more like Master Carly…”

Lina collapsed right where she was after releasing her magic.

It seemed she had completely drained her mana and was on the verge of fainting, so I initiated Mana Transfer.

”She’s strong, but… the price is an insane amount of mana…”

”I thought she’d have enough mana since Lina has a great affinity for fire, but it seems she barely made it…”

”Usually, she boosts her mana with her staff, so she should still be able to cast… but after one shot, she’ll be completely empty.”

Lina was also somewhat concerned about the inefficiency of her magic.

However, the power was undoubtedly exceptional.

It felt necessary for the impending battle against Orphée Bleu, which was expected to be a fight to the death.

”Next, we could use Carly’s advanced-level Earth magic, Mega Quake? Is your mana recovering? Should you lend your some mana?”

Carly’s face changed as she was regaining her mana with a potion.

”My lord, I feel uneasy receiving Mana Transfer for free. How about I recover my mana myself? I’m fully prepared, after all.”

Carly quickly began to remove her underwear beneath her leather armor.

Just then, a voice called out from behind us.

 It was Lana.

”Ms. Carly, please don’t do such things out here. Mr. Kent has become one of the prominent nobles in the Kingdom. It would be troublesome if rumors spread about such behavior in public. I’ll restore your mana, so please put your underwear back on.”

”Please, Lana. I must receive my lord’s seed and bear a son.”

Lana ignored Carly’s plea and began her magic incantation.

”Gathered magic element, become the essence of magic and grant him vitality! ‘Mana Heal’!!”

As Lana’s magic activated, the magic elements that had been drifting around gathered towards Carly, drawn into her by Lana’s touch.

”BUHA! What is this intoxicating mana?! I might get drunk on this magic element!”

”Ah, it seems you’ve recovered a bit too much. This place has a high concentration of magic elements… If you don’t activate your magic soon, you might really suffer from magic element intoxication!”

”Ugh, you got in my way!”

Carly, having received a mana heal, hurriedly began the incantation for MEGA QUAKE.

”Gathered magic elements, tear the earth asunder and swallow my enemies! ‘MEGA QUAKE’!!”

The magic unleashed created a massive fissure in front of us, so deep that we couldn’t see the bottom, and it eventually began to close.

The magic’s influence split the ground over an area about ten meters wide and 2 hundred meters long.

”Hah, hah, phew. I almost let Lana cause me to suffer from magic element intoxication.”

Carly was breathing heavily as she glared at Lana.

”How unfortunate… I was planning to render Ms. Carly immobile with magic element intoxication.”

Lana’s dark side was seeping out.

”Oh, big sis. That’s not good. Even if it’s Master Carly, that’s just not acceptable.”

I thought that if I got involved, I’d be dragged into this mess, so I stepped away a bit from the 3 of them and decided to try out DIVINE THUNDERBOLT.

”Gathered magic elements, become the divine lightning and annihilate all! ‘DIVINE THUNDERBOLT’!”

I activated the Divine Magic, and after my blue magic power bar dropped to about ten percent, a round target site appeared before me.

As I concentrated, the round site expanded greatly, filling my entire field of vision.

Then, I focused on the activation icon that was in the corner of my sight.

A few seconds later, dark clouds spread rapidly overhead, and hundreds of lightning bolts struck simultaneously, shaking the ground beneath me.

The effect range of the Divine Magic was astonishingly wide, and the meadow that had been in my view turned into a scorched wasteland.

Damn it… this is too powerful… if we’re not careful, we might end up dragging our allies into it… and the amount of magic elements released after activation is insane…

After activating it, the released magic elements had shrouded the surroundings like a dark mist.

If I activate it several more times, it’s possible that a monster’s den or forest, similar to the South District, could naturally generate, given the density of the magic.

That’s why, considering the aftermath, it wasn’t a divine magic that could be used recklessly.

”K-Kent… that Divine Magic is bad news… I didn’t expect such a dense release of magic elements, but this is definitely not something we can use recklessly.”

”My lord… the magic elements we’ve released are on a completely different level… that Divine Magic should truly be a last resort…”

”Mr. Kent… more importantly, have you thought of an excuse for this wasteland? You do remember this is the direct territory of His Majesty the Demon Lord, right?”

I was taken aback by the sheer power and the amount of magic elements released.

The same Divine Magic, Creation of the Universe, consumed a lot of mana, but it didn’t release nearly as much magic element.

I had thoughtlessly tried it out this time, but the result was an overwhelming release that turned a low magic element contaminated area into something with the density of a Hunting Ground.

Thanks to that, I found myself in a situation where I had to apologize to Shifa.

I had contaminated the land near the Capital City, which was under his direct control.

Using the war as an excuse might keep me from being pursued too deeply, but I could still get in trouble later.

…Divine Magic is no joke… Orphée Bleu must have fallen and suffered from this contradiction, which is probably why he went through the trouble of creating a downgraded version of magic…

The amount of magic elements released by Divine Magic was too vast, and it was thought to be causing new monsters to spawn even after defeating existing ones.

”I have no choice but to prostrate myself and apologize to His Majesty Shifa…I’ll only use it in the worst-case scenario during the Gertroud battle. However, my use of Divine Magic will remain a secret, so please attribute it to Lina and Carly’s magic.”

My proposal brought calculating expressions to the faces of the two women.

”I think it depends on Kent’s sincerity, but…hey, Master Carly.”

”That’s right. It’s up to our lord’s discretion. Yeah, I’m fully prepared.”

”No way. You two can’t just go outside!”

”Big Sister Lana is having a drink with Kent at the clinic, isn’t she?”

”That’s a medical treatment! Mr. Kent is recovering from fatigue!”

It was true that Lana’s clinic was a place where she could unwind, and she did enjoy playing nurse and doctor there, so Lina’s words couldn’t be denied.

But I wondered if I had misremembered Lina being involved in that too…

The sisters’ futile argument was about to escalate, so I took the three of them and brought them to a nearby thicket. Then, I poured a cup of white liquid that would serve as a fee for their silence and helped them recover their magic. By the time my magic was fully restored, the three of them were drenched in the white liquid, stumbled, and collapsed on the grass.

”So, I’ve paid the fee for your silence, so please.”

The three of them nodded and then lost all their strength, collapsing unconscious.

I carried them on my shoulders and returned to the palace.

* * *

The next day, I reported the previous day’s failure to His Majesty Shifa alongside my father-in-law.

”Your Majesty, yesterday my subordinate conducted a magic experiment in the outskirts, contaminating the land with magic elements. This incident is due to my inability, and I humbly request your leniency.”

I apologized for the magic element pollution caused by my magic experiment the previous day.

”Was that incredible lightning yesterday caused by Kent’s magic? There must have been some excellent magic scrolls lying in the treasury. I took a look at the inventory, but was that all there was? I would have been fine giving Kent everything if he was going to work for me.”

It seemed Shifa had already gone through the inventory I handed over yesterday.

If I were to monopolize such valuable items, the jealousy of the other nobles would surely focus on me, so I politely declined.

”Your Majesty, please don’t indulge Kent. He doesn’t need any advance rewards. Despite his appearance, my foolish son is one of the wealthiest in the Kingdom. He has more money than I do!”

”Is that so… I’ll think of another reward for Kent. I’ve heard he has a fondness for women. Would the palace maids be suitable? Or perhaps the daughters of good families? If you raise Gertroud’s head, I can give him whatever reward he desires.”

Palace maids, huh… I bet there are some pretty cute girls among them… Wait! No way!

Shifa was calmly assessing me, who was getting carried away with thoughts of rewards.

Though he appeared delicate, Shifa was a shrewd individual who had continued to thwart Gwain’s schemes and was a strong player in the long-standing power struggles of the palace.

He was trying to determine whether I would be someone who could work under her.

”No, there’s no need for such concern… but I might want at least one. If I find a woman I desire, I’ll ask Your Majesty for assistance, so I would appreciate your arrangements.”

I chose the path of flattering Your Majesty.

If I could just eliminate Orphée Bleu, who was inside Gertroud, I planned to live a secluded life in the South District.

Staying in the Capital City felt risky, as I might get caught up in power struggles.

If Aldo remained close to Shifa, I wouldn’t be seen as a threat, and I believed Your Majesty would govern justly.

”My foolish son has no interest in the central power. After we defeat Gertroud, I would like to take Lord Gwain’s place. That way, we can control both the Gwain faction and the Fabulanova faction. I will serve His Majesty faithfully as a close aide. So, I ask that you appoint my foolish son as the South District Margrave.”

My father-in-law seemed to have his sights set on returning to the central government after our victory in this battle against Gertroud.

This defensive battle was also a preparation for the new Kingdom army’s formation, and my father-in-law was carefully assessing the capabilities of the troops from the various lords under his command.

As for me, I was leading the Abyss Vena troops within the South District Margrave’s army.

”I didn’t know Arbalest was so interested in power. I thought you were a warrior, unlike your brother…”

”Your Majesty, by Lord Gwain’s position, I mean a military role. Please find a suitable person for the Chancellor. I will restore the weakened military.”

”I see… So Arbalest will take care of the military… I’ll leave the post-war reconstruction to you. I believe there is no one else more suitable for the Kent matter. After the war, I will entrust the management of the South District to Kent.”

”Thank you for your kind words…”

My father-in-law bowed deeply toward Shifa.

I followed suit and bowed as well.

* * *

A few days passed, and then the news came that Gertroud’s army had finally appeared on our patrol ne2rk.

A total of 50 thousand troops, mostly composed of Living Dead, their numbers reduced from the battle with the Black Dragon army.

Standing atop the outer wall of the Capital City, I observed the enemy forces alongside Shifa, who had received the report.

 ”An army of 50 thousand… Can I win…?”

”Your Majesty Shifa, in war, weakness is the greatest enemy.”

Aldo, clad in armor, stood by Shifa’s side, offering his counsel.

”Lord Aldo is correct. Weakness is of no use.”

Velis was also leading his soldiers from his domain into the battle.

Having agreed to the strategy of defending our territory, there was no turning back; he had no choice but to bring out the soldiers he had summoned from his lands.

Shifa was nervous that her first real battle had turned into such a large-scale war, but the moment to begin was drawing near with each passing second.

”Kent, I’m counting on you with the Arbalest! The fate of the Kingdom hinges on this one battle. I sincerely hope everyone will fight with all their might!”

 ”””Yeah!”””
