Chapter 144 Human Thoughts Surpass Ability.
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Human emotions far surpass any ability.
The words echoed in Haruto’s mind—You cannot bring back the dead.
His ability had determined the patient was beyond saving.
”Please, let me see the patient!”
”Guide him.”
The nurse led him through the sterile white hallways of the Intensive Care Unit.
Intensive Care Unit: A facility where critically ill patients are treated around the clock.
Beep beep beep beep.
In front of him, a woman lay motionless, connected to various machines that beeped and clicked.
Yet, the steady pulse of the electrocardiogram showed her heart was still beating.
(This woman… Could she be… from that time?)
Back then, in the panic of the moment, Haruto couldn’t focus on the woman’s face. It was all a blur of urgency, but he trusted that the doctors and nurses weren’t lying to him. This woman must be the one from that time.
(But… when I look at her now\… she doesn’t even resemble my mother.)
His fingers gently brushed against her hand.
(It’s true… the brain has been damaged…)
The heart had stopped.
When a person goes into cardiac arrest, blood flow to the brain halts. Consciousness fades in seconds, and after about 10 to 15 seconds, the brain begins to suffer irreversible damage.
If nothing is done within the first few minutes, survival chances plummet.
* 1 minute: 95% chance of survival.
* 3 minutes: 75%.
* 5 minutes: 25%.
* 8 minutes: near zero.
Brain damage was inevitable. And yet, against all odds, the woman’s heart was still beating.
”I’m sorry… Please get better soon.”
The nurse, having heard Haruto’s words, couldn’t help but feel something was off. “Get well soon” seemed like an odd choice, instead of “regain consciousness.” But she said nothing, merely nodding quietly.
Haruto left the ICU, his steps surprisingly light despite the weight of the situation.
The patient—the one his ability had judged as dead—was still alive.
Her consciousness hadn’t returned, and yet… Haruto felt a strange sense of relief.
It wasn’t a victory, not by any means.
But the doctors and nurses, who must have fought tirelessly to keep her alive, had surpassed the limits of their tools and knowledge.
Their efforts, driven by pure human emotion, had defied what was thought possible.
That fact, simple yet profound, was a spark of hope for Haruto. He, who had struggled to use his own ability freely, saw a glimmer of something—something beyond power, something more human.
Even without special abilities, there were things that could be done… if only they searched hard enough.
(Surely, there’s still something I can do…)
Soon, Haruto and his friends would face the most difficult exam in the country—the national medical exam. Passing it would mark the beginning of their official training as doctors, where they’d finally take part in real medical cases.
If Haruto could just immerse himself in that world, perhaps he would discover a way to make a difference…
With that hope, he set his mind on his remaining time in university, ready to face whatever came next.
* * *
Later that evening, as Haruto was heading home, a quiet miracle occurred…
The woman Haruto had mistaken for Harue woke up.
The doctors and nurses were more stunned by the test results than by the fact she had regained consciousness.
There were no lingering aftereffects, no signs of brain damage. It was as if the damage had never happened.
One of the nurses, remembering Haruto’s words from earlier, couldn’t shake the thought that those words—”Please get well soon”—had been the key. It was as if, in that moment, they had somehow known she would wake up.
There were some doctors who, no matter the odds, rarely lost their patients. While the world hailed those with exceptional surgical skills as “super doctors,” within the medical community, the true super doctors were those who somehow always managed to pull through, whether by luck or by some unknown talent.
The young male student who had spoken those words—he might one day become one of them.
And with that thought, they quietly returned to their work, unknowingly carrying with them the hope that the future held something extraordinary.
