Chapter 195 What Is It There For?
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Haruto was in charge of Nana’s rehabilitation.
Since her older sister, Suzume, was also present, he decided to check the condition of Nana’s lower body, just once.
”Then, I’ll touch your leg a little,” Haruto said as he crouched down.
”Yes, please,” Nana replied, nodding gently.
Because the manager’s office was small, the three of them moved to the treatment room.
Nana sat in her wheelchair, her legs already uncovered for the session.
(Huh? Softer than I expected…)
”I thought your range of motion might be tight, but it’s not really. Have you been doing anything special?” Haruto asked, carefully pressing on her knee.
”Ah, my sister moves them every day!” Nana answered, a proud smile forming.
(Suzume-san is incredible…)
Limbs that can’t feel are heavier than expected.
Not because the weight changes, but because the body no longer reacts to support its own posture.
A limb without tension just hangs there—completely relaxed—and that makes it feel heavier.
The fact that Suzume lifts such heavy legs alone is already impressive.
But to do that every single day, without fail… Haruto couldn’t help but feel his heart stir.
She works full time, comes home tired, and still takes care of Nana’s rehab.
Compared to that, what was he doing?
”Suzume-san, may I ask what kind of work you do?” he said quietly.
”I’m a lawyer,” she answered, just as calmly.
”L-Lawyer!?”
”Y-Yes…? Did I say something wrong?” Suzume tilted her head, slightly confused.
Haruto flinched. A lawyer—of all things!
For someone in his line of work, lawsuits were the scariest thing in the world.
And with his own practice dancing that fine line between massage and medical treatment, he felt a chill run down his spine.
”N-No! That’s amazing, really!” Haruto said quickly. (Phew\… good thing I didn’t have to bring out that consent form…)
”Haruto-kun, that’s kind of a weird thing for a doctor to say,” Nana said, raising her eyebrows.
”Haha… yeah, you’re right,” he admitted, scratching his cheek.
Noticing the tension in the air, Haruto quickly changed the subject.
”By the way, Nana-san, you’ll be coming to pick me up and see me off too, right? Are the times okay?”
”My commute is fine. I’d just be grateful if you could wait a bit after work,” Nana replied.
”No problem at all. Please put your work first, Suzume-san,” Haruto said with a respectful nod.
”Thank you very much,” Suzume said with a smile.
And so, Nana’s employment at the massage clinic was settled, and the sisters left for home.
But even after seeing them off, Haruto stood there… face clouded with quiet thoughts.
”Good work, Haru-kun,” his mother called as he came back inside.
”Good work, Mom,” Haruto replied, removing his shoes.
”You finally got someone for reception! Kamitsubo-san can take it easy now.”
”Yeah… I’ll make sure to thank her properly.”
”…What’s wrong? You don’t look happy,” she asked, peering into his face.
”Hey, Mom… what do you think my ability is really for?” he asked suddenly, his voice low.
Maybe it wasn’t the first time this question had come to him.
But since opening up to Akane and Harue about his power, maybe it was the first time he truly faced it like this.
”Well… I’d say it’s to help people struggling with injury or illness, right?” she answered softly.
”But still… I can’t really do it the way I want to.”
”…Hmm. Maybe you’re thinking too big, Haru-kun.”
”Thinking big?”
”Of course, you can’t expect to regrow someone’s arms or legs. That kind of thing’s impossible.
But if you can help someone who couldn’t walk, walk again… and just shrug it off like, ‘Oh, maybe it’s a mystery,’ then no one’s going to chase you down, I think.”
”But wouldn’t rumors start spreading? That’s already happening with Yuna-san.”
”Even if rumors spread, Haru-kun, no one can prove it, right?
It’s not the same, but there are places like that in the world—hot springs that supposedly cure illnesses.”
All over the world, there are hot springs said to heal terminal illness, or places rumored to cure all kinds of conditions.
But those places never advertise it. The stories just spread on their own.
And whether it’s real or not… no one can ever prove it.
”I get what you mean, but… when I do it, it’s 100% healed.”
”Then maybe you don’t need to heal everyone. You could just help the people you care about.
And if someone wants to be healed, maybe you can even say something like, ‘Do as I say if you want this.’”
”Pfft, what is that? Sounds like I’m a shady miracle worker.”
”But there are people like that, right? People who want to be healed, no matter what.
You don’t have to go to a hospital and fix everyone. Just… be there for the ones who believe in you, who come to you.”
”…I guess you’re right.”
”Hehe, now that’s the face I like seeing on Haru-kun.”
”Thanks, Mom. I feel a little better now.”
Notes:
• Nana – The one dating Haruto before she goes to Hokkaido.
• Suzume – Female. Nana’s companion, who is just as beautiful as Nana. She has a husky voice, which makes her age and relationship to Nana (sister) slightly ambiguous. She is supportive and polite, accompanying Nana to the job interview.
• Yuna – Female. A famous idol. She has well-defined features and is described as idol-like in appearance. She is a member of a popular idol group known for intense dance and singing performances. She is considering an AV job, which is unusual for a current popular idol. Her relationship with Haruto is that of a customer seeking assistance.
