Chapter 110 Want to Fly Freely in the Sky!

”A faction of dwarves in Valend, much like Sonata, believes that flying machines could one day be possible,” King Torygg said, his voice thoughtful. “What do you think, Sanai? Would you be willing to lend them your wisdom?”
”That sounds incredibly exciting, filled with adventure! Even if you hadn’t invited me, I would have loved to join in!” Ayumu replied with enthusiasm.

As Ayumu recalled the conversation from the dinner with King Torygg the night before, he found himself marveling at the mock-up—a life-sized model built according to the design plans.
According to Torygg’s story, recently, there had been a clash in Valend Cave Kingdom between two factions of dwarves: the innovative ones eager to develop flying machines, and the conservative ones who insisted that the kingdom should focus on other, more practical fields. The two factions had come into conflict after a series of disagreements, leading to a brawl fueled by alcohol.
Of course, before things escalated that far, neutral advisors had suggested an alternative solution: to allocate the budget fairly to both factions. However, there was only so much funding available.
”That would leave us with insufficient funds for development!” one faction had argued.
”We shouldn’t waste our resources on such reckless ventures!” the other side had retorted.
Both sides, each backed by influential dwarves within Valend, held considerable sway, making it impossible for King Torygg to take a definitive side without causing further political instability. This, in turn, had led to delays in the budget process, affecting the kingdom’s governance.
That was when Ayumu saw an opportunity. “This is my chance to earn some favor with Valend,” he thought as he accepted Torygg’s request to help with the flying machine project in exchange for the kingdom’s old blueprints and technical support for Yugan. Despite his concerns, Ayumu agreed without hesitation, especially when Torygg asked him to “lend them your wisdom.”
Looking at the mock-up now, it seemed that the flying machine was nearly complete. From the design, it looked like a hybrid of an autogyro and a helicopter, with a compact body and a rotor on top. The design was haphazard, likely the result of trial and error, as the engineers had tried to incorporate all sorts of features without narrowing down their focus.
This was a common issue in engineering—especially when creating weapons or machines. If one tries to combine too many functions in a single product, it often ends up underperforming compared to a specialized product. The result was often a “jack-of-all-trades” machine, good at nothing in particular.
Ayumu reflected on this but quickly dismissed the concern. After all, the flying machine was nearly complete, and if that made his work easier, he wasn’t about to complain.
For now, he needed to gather the specifications and requirements from the Innovation Faction’s dwarves. The direction of the design would depend on whether they wanted a machine more like an autogyro—faster and more like an airplane—or something closer to a helicopter that could perform vertical take-offs and hover.
”The budget is tight, and time is short,” Ayumu muttered to himself. “I’ll have to act quickly.”
With that thought in mind, Ayumu set out to meet with the dwarves in the Innovation Faction. He knew that if they were going to complete the flying machine in a short time frame, it would require careful planning and precise execution.
