She had shut her eyes against the terror and humiliation, and when she opened them again, it was already over.
”What…? What just happened?” she whispered.
With trembling hands, Mineyama forced herself to look at Sada’s body. A metal shaft, sharp as a drill bit, had shattered his skull clean through.
’An enemy?‘
Her mind raced. Still exposed, she snatched up her halberd, her only weapon, and swept her gaze across the shadows. But whoever had slain Sada was already gone.
’Who could have done this…?‘
Someone had killed Takuma Sada, sparing her from the assault he had threatened. Relief should have flooded her veins, yet her heart churned with something far more complicated.
Ayumu Sanai had already fallen—or so she believed. And now Sada too was dead.
Everything she had fought for, the desperate attempts to prevent her classmates from being picked off one by one, had collapsed into its opposite. Even after gaining a powerful Inspiration, she could not stop the losses. One after another, lives slipped away.
’In the end… I couldn’t save anyone, could I?‘
The thought gnawed at her, heavy as iron, her spirit breaking beneath its weight. She did not yet know the cruel truth—that Ayumu Sanai had not only survived, but was the very hand that, by mistake, had killed Sada. That revelation lay waiting for her in the days to come.
