Volume 3 Chapter 119-2 The Downfall Of Silverwooloo II

”Well, well. He was the one who retrieved the records from Tersea’s tent.”
”In that case, let’s summon the spirit of Black Onyx and have it close the gate. If the gate is closed, the people who were used as fuel will return to normal, right?”
”Yes, that’s what Hariette said.”
”But when we summon the spirit of Black Onyx again, a sacrifice will be required, right?”
”Lady Hariette chose my political rival as the sacrifice, but it’s not like the spirit can’t be summoned without offering a person. After looking at the records, there might be other lives that could work.”
”Then why doesn’t that Barghest guy summon the spirit of Black Onyx? Didn’t he say he didn’t know how to close the gate?”
Kian shook his head in response to the Wolfmen warrior leader’s question.
”He probably meant that he can’t close it himself. However, even if he can’t do it alone, there is a way. The method is to summon the spirit and have it close the gate.”
”Hmph? …Hmph. Hmph.”
The Wolfmen leader nodded and sat down again deeply.
”Anyway, stop thinking about killing everyone. The Bloodsucking Kind killed a lot of people before coming here, so depending on the size of the gate, it might take a few days to return to the original number.”
”Hmph, indeed.”
”And you came to collect evidence of Barghest’s illegal experiments, right? You’re not here to carry out justice for the good of the world. They should be taken as living witnesses to the Beastmen Alliance’s tent. Am I wrong?”
”That’s right. I completely forgot because what’s in front of me is so impactful.”
Kian looked over the warriors and appealed to their emotions in the end.
”Killing all Silverwooloo except Serena is the same as eradicating Silverwooloo blood. It’s a sad thing. A family will be destroyed. You’re all still of the same kind. Stop this futile act of tearing each other apart among your own. If you’re of the same kind, you should join hands and live together.”
The Wolfmen nodded.
Serena, supported by Sarah, returned to her side.
”…Thank you, Kian.”
”It was nothing. Are you sure you’re alright?”
”Yeah, I’m fine. It’s thanks to Father.”
Serena said, slightly unsteady, but still managed to speak. Even in such a moment, it was admirable that she kept Sarah’s name hidden. Rean, just earlier, had called Sarah’s name aloud without hesitation.
”Next time, don’t draw your sword so suddenly. Instead of immediately taking action, think carefully before you act. No matter how right your actions are, if you resort to violence, that’s the end of it.”
”…Okay.”
Sarah said, “Good girl,” and patted Serena on the head. However, Serena twisted her body and said, “I’m not a child, you know.”
A cold atmosphere began to settle over the square.
At that moment, Rean, who had gone out earlier, returned, making a loud clattering sound with his footsteps.
”I found Vest! My bad feeling was right! Vest was—half petrified in the underground magic circle!”
* * *
To sort out the situation—
It was found that the Bloodsucking Kind were overflowing in the swamp due to the gate opened to save Ozeas. In order to close the gate, the Black Onyx spirit must be summoned, but only Barghest, who holds Tersea’s records, knows the summoning method.
Therefore, it was decided to lie in wait for Barghest, who would next bring supplies, capture him, and ask about the summoning method for the Black Onyx spirit.
Barghest and Kian are currently enemies, but if captured, it would be possible to persuade him. On the other hand, if he is not captured, he may attempt to escape as soon as he becomes aware of their presence. After he emerges from the teleportation circle, they will surround him in a pincer attack, neutralize him, and then begin negotiations.
As for Vestacia, she was found in an underground facility, after turning left from the courtyard, with her lower body Black Onyx-ified and her entire body wrapped in thorny vines, much like Glen and the others.
If she is brought back, Kian’s Quest number one will be successfully accomplished, but Vestacia’s body is fused with the sacrificial object, and it cannot be forcibly separated.
Sarah went to see the gate above the temple, but in the end, even Sarah did not understand how to close the gate. To bring Vestacia back safe and sound, it seemed unavoidable to rely on the spirit of the Black Onyx.
”I am against calling forth the spirit of the Black Onyx. That is a dangerous entity.”
Now, they left the square where Mrs. Colinna was. While preparing camp in the temple courtyard, Rean said this with a stern face.
”Can you think of any other methods, Rean?”
Kian stopped his cooking and turned to face him. The sun was already beginning to set.
Behind Rean, the warrior Wolfmen were preparing for overnight stays in their respective places.
”I don’t know. Even Ms. Sarah didn’t understand. There’s no way I can understand.”
”There are spells of the spirit that activate over the world, they say. If the gate on the mountain is of that kind, even if you understand the principle, Sarah cannot solve it. Only the spirit can, because it can solve it.”
”Are you familiar with spirits?”
”No, I just read such descriptions somewhere long ago. I am not knowledgeable at all.”
”The spirit of the Black Onyx… I feel that it is an evil existence, somehow.”
”Why do you feel that way?”
”It’s just a hunch.”
Rean answered briefly, then apparently couldn’t think of the next line, and turned his back to Kian.
”Rean. You should apologize to Serena later.”
”I already apologized. …But she said she wouldn’t forgive me. Well, it can’t be helped. I was the one who resorted to force.”
”I see. I understand Serena’s feelings, but I also understand yours well. If she draws her sword and shows hostility, sometimes you have to act before she does.”
Serena, who drew her sword and went to fight, was not entirely at fault. In that situation, if she drew her sword and said, “I am your opponent,” it would be natural for Rean to believe she was genuinely going to attack.
From Kian’s perspective, Serena is unlikely to ever cause harm to Rean, but from Rean’s point of view, Serena is a wolfman boasting remarkable physical ability. The possibility that Rean might be decapitated the moment he averts his eyes was sufficiently present from Rean’s perspective.
That said, Serena’s sword-drawing act was prompted by Rean’s own provocation to kill Colinna and her family. Even if his violence was meant to protect himself, it likely would not be justified.
Rean faintly smiled.
”Thank you, Kian. …Well, I think I may have misunderstood you a bit. You’re not the ‘garbage scavenger’ spoken of in East End. I believe you’re a good adventurer with a fair and just heart.”
”It’s rare for you to praise me. But I accept it honestly.”
When Kian said that, Rean said, “Sorry for interrupting,” and left. In exchange, Sarah came over.
”According to Ms. Colinna, Barghest will come again the night after tomorrow. Apparently, there’s a magic tool to contact Mr. Barghest, but it’s for emergencies only because it activates defense golems and traps when used.”
”If you activate the magic tool, Barghest might not come alone but may bring Wolfmen warriors who know the situation. That would be troublesome.”
”So, the plan is to catch them while they’re off guard. We could also send a threatening letter claiming Ms. Colinna is being held hostage to lure them, but…”
”They might also bring warriors who understand the situation and breach the defenses.”
”That’s right.”
Sarah nodded.
”Do you think the warriors who went through the gate into the other dimension are still alive? Apparently, Barghest tosses food and weapons into the gate every time he comes here, but…”
”That was three months ago. Since Bloodsucking Kind is appearing, there’s probably no way they can’t return from there, so chances are slim.”
”I see.”
”Hey.”
Sarah moved one step closer and whispered in Azrael language.
”About the Black Onyx spirit that Ms. Hariette summoned, could it be the Azraelian merchant you mentioned?”
”────”
”It matches the appearance you described. From the moment the topic of the Black Onyx spirit came up, Mr. Rean’s face distorted, so it is definitely the same person—no, the same spirit, right?”
”Sarah, about the sudden question, do you feel like someone is watching us?”
”No. Why?”
Sarah looked around nervously. The Wolfmen warriors were all busy preparing meals and appeared not to be paying attention to them.
Rean and Ninini were talking over there, and Serena was talking with Colinna in the plaza area.
”Then that’s good. Dangerous spirits tend to eliminate those who come too close without reason. Since there’s a possibility that the Black Onyx spirit is like that, we shouldn’t get too involved.”
”If that’s the case, we’ll be summoning it within two days at the earliest. It’s impossible not to get involved.”
”That’s true.”
”I’m aware of the danger—but honestly, I feel this request is not worth the Quest reward anymore.”
”What a coincidence. I feel the same.”
”One more thing. You previously told me about the ring you received from ‘Thorn Magician’ that brought you back to life.”
”Oh. That is the Restoration Curse.”
”Does that mean it’s really possible to restore Ozeas?”
”Well… too much time has passed since Ozeas died. Even if the body is restored, I don’t know if the soul will come back. In your case, Ms. Priscilla stabilized your soul, so you’re still yourself, but Natra and Rufna didn’t preserve their souls. As a result, only the Wraith’s soul is probably inside their bodies.”
As a result, Natra’s ego was troubled for a while. Whether Rufna experienced similar issues is unclear, given her personality.
”Listen, the spirit of Black Onyx grants wishes, but I wonder if it’s a demon-like being that truly cannot grant what humans genuinely desire. No, demons are also a type of spirit. It’s just our own classification.”
”Maybe.”
”Sorry to intrude on your cooking, Kian. I will set traps around Barghest’s teleportation formation. Barghest might arrive earlier than planned.”
”Yeah. Since he has the vice-commander position, I don’t think he can leave the ‘Storm Herd’ so easily, but we need to stay vigilant. Several are probably keeping watch now, right?”
”Yes, they are.”
Sarah gestured with her chin towards the Wolfmen warriors and spoke.
Now that he thought about it, Yelmar sent reinforcements at a good time. Though rough, without them, Kian and Sarah might have had to stay by the teleportation formation all the time.
”Can they fight and win against Barghest?”
”Yeah. Barghest’s short-range teleportation is troublesome, but it doesn’t have particularly strong combat abilities. The subordinates Yelmar sent are, for the most part, comparable to typical fighters of the ‘Storm Herd.’ If they start surrounded from all sides, they’ll probably strike before Barghest can curse ‘damn it’ and utter it aloud.”
”I see. They were originally members of the same group, so it makes sense.”
”Serena, if trained, might become this kind of warrior too.”
”Oh, are you worried about others, Kian? You should focus on your own training first.”
”Yeah. ──Perfect timing, why not practice tonight?”
”Sounds good. Show me ‘Pursuit of the Shadow.’”
”It would help if you also teach me about ‘Thunder’ and others.”
Sarah winked and said, “Then, after dinner, let’s gather at the corridor of the ancient temple,” and headed toward the building with the teleportation formation.
