Volume 3 Chapter 58 Situation Explanation II

Sarah frowned and glared at Priscilla, but the white-haired witch just smirked as if she didn’t care.
”When people are desperate, they will do anything. Especially if it means killing a fallen noble girl with no land, title, or money. Just waving around the deed to land in the outskirts of Châtillon would make most people accept it easily. Lord Kian should know that, right?”
”……”
No matter how loyal someone is.
Even if they are captivated by religion.
Very few can resist the magic power of money.
Especially if that money can help not just them, but their family too.
Kian had seen many adventurers betray their best friends for money during his life as an adventurer.
Not all of them were scum, though.
Some betrayed because they had a heart.
For their children.
For their sick wives.
They weighed their best friends against their needs, suffered, and in the end, betrayed them.
From Kian’s experience, he couldn’t say that even the proud warrior monks or the noble servants of Nakash would never betray.
It wouldn’t be strange if those who felt indebted to Sarah bared their fangs for silver coins to feed their wives and children.
Sarah placed her cup on the rock and looked back and forth between Kian and Priscilla.
”I understand. I will think about what comes next.”
”Yeah, that’s good. You have some time. Probably.”
”I will head to Izerland. I can’t stay in Châtillon, where I’ve been killing adventurers as the ‘Night Crier.’ I plan to sell my gear for money and look for work at the Adventurer Guild. ──Thank you both for saving my life. When things settle down, I will come back to repay this debt.”
”Then you should join Lord Kian’s party!”
”Huh?” “Huh?”
It wasn’t just Sarah who looked confused; Kian did too.
Sarah is coming to his party?
It seemed like a logical conclusion, but he thought it was mixed with his own wishes, so he tried to push that thought away.
Priscilla continued.
”But think about it! Lady Sarah registering as an Adventurer means she will start as the lowest rank. There will be limits on the Quests she can take, and without any gear, she needs to find trustworthy companions to explore with. So, I think joining his party, where she can earn contribution points and rewards without being a burden, is the best option.”
”But I can’t be that much of a bother.”
”──I don’t mind. In fact, I welcome it. But in the end, I want Sarah to do what she wants. If you don’t want to be with your former fiancé, I totally understand… If you don’t like being an Adventurer, I can recommend you to Her Excellency Maribel or Archbishop Homolka. Oh, but Her Excellency doesn’t have much money, so if you want to earn, Archbishop Homolka is the better choice. Becoming a Church Knight will limit your freedom a lot, but your status in the Western Church will protect you.”
”No, if I can join Kian’s party, that would be the best. But are the slots and reward distribution okay? If it’s a bother, I’ll try solo.”
”It’s fine. Right now, there are 4 members in the party, and one is resting. I plan to make up with them when we return to East End, and then I’ll introduce you. With 5 members, the rewards won’t be a problem.”
”Really? Are you sure it’s not too much?”
After looking at Kian, Sarah glanced back at Natra.
Natra simply said, “As Sir Kian wishes,” and closed her mouth.
”Rufna over there won’t mind either, right? She’ll be happy to welcome you to the party.”
”Sorry, and thank you. Then, I’ll take you up on that. …To be honest, I couldn’t see myself going solo as an Adventurer. So, Kian, your offer is really helpful.”
”You helped me without a second thought before. Now it’s my turn. Join us without holding back. But, since you’re joining the party, you’ll have to do your job properly! Be ready!”
”Yes. We need to earn money quickly and create a foundation for everyone to live on. Until then, I’ll be counting on you.”
He stood up and shook her hand.
Sarah’s hand, which he hadn’t touched in a while, was a little cold.
He didn’t know if it was because her time as a person had stopped, or if it was because she had been thrown into the water and gotten cold.
But he had definitely gotten her back.
Kian thought as he shook hands with Sarah, who looked a little confused.
(It turned out like this, but it’s good that I can work with her again.)
* * *
After that, the 5 of them went down the mountain and met up with the mountain troops.
Priscilla’s 2 carriages were prepared in front of the village, and Sarah got into the rear carriage with Priscilla.
She was going to change into simple clothes inside.
Kian got into the front carriage with Natra and Rufna, and they discussed the details of their future plans – how to withdraw from Châtillon and what to do at the Izerland fortress.
As a result, they would first report to Guy in Châtillon.
After that, they would go to the Adventurer’s Guild to report the completion of the Quest.
Once they received points and rewards from the Guild, they would buy some souvenirs in the bay area and pack them along with the bottles of Châtillon liquor that Robert had requested.
If the volume was large, they would need to arrange for them to be sent to the East End separately.
After everything was done, it was time for a vacation.
They could train, take on simple Quests at the Guild to earn a little money, or play at the Casino, each doing what they liked.
Natra would train.
Rufna would go to the library and finish copying the Necromancy spell books (apparently, she had already paid Priscilla a lot of money).
Kian planned to train with Natra, but he had to go say goodbye to Lady Fhana during his free time.
If he went to greet her, he would probably be invited to either tea or dinner.
He had said he would bring a gift, so he needed to prepare something suitable for the visit.
But he didn’t think Lady Fhana would be happy with something bought with money.
He should craft something appropriate to take with him.
Worst case, he thought about giving her a promise scroll like the one he had given to Christy before.
In 3 days, Sarah’s body check would be done, so he would meet up with Priscilla and fly to Izerland.
According to the mountain soldiers, it seemed Oswald had already been confirmed safe.
They said he was doing well, but Kian should go see him properly with Priscilla to make sure.
He also needed to report to Maribel about Jibril.
If Priscilla and Guy didn’t plan to report, Maribel would be left at a disadvantage with the information.
Looking ahead to his rise as a noble, he should regularly check in with Maribel to strengthen their bond.
”The reward money from the arena quest has been divided, so you both can buy whatever you like. But if possible, get your sub-weapons from Guy.”
”Oh right, we need to go pick up the weapons we asked Lord Guy for.”
”They probably aren’t ready yet. I should wait a bit longer to pick them up along with my Windsong Blade.”
”A magic sword made by Lord Guy… I always thought weapons just needed to be sturdy, so this is my first time holding something like a magic sword. Thinking of Sir Kian’s Windsong Blade, it must have amazing power to blow away enemies regardless of the user’s ability, right?”
”Usually, you can’t just make those easily, but the materials we gave this time are special. We might get something really powerful. I just hope I don’t get lazy with my skills because of the weapon’s performance.”
”Rufna, you only practice magic. You should train with the sword sometimes. Soon, you’ll forget how to even draw your sword.”
”I won’t forget. You’re really underestimating me, Lady…”
”Even if it’s not a magic sword, Guy’s workshop has lots of great weapons and armor. If you want to buy something that goes a bit over your allowance, just tell me. I can cover it from the extra funds, so don’t hold back. You can’t be stingy about weapons and armor.”
”Yes, sir.”
”Master’s kind. Well, managing a budget is part of being a warrior monk.”
Rufna said this and leaned back with a creak.
Next to her, Natra looked at Kian and spoke.
”What about *Lady Sarah’s* equipment?”
”……”
”Ah… yeah. What should we do?”
”I think we shouldn’t give expensive weapons to someone who might leave the party whenever she wants. We’d just end up getting stolen from.”
”I want to believe Sarah wouldn’t do that, though.”
”No, she probably would. Does Master think Lady Sarah’s some kind of saint?”
”I do think she’s close to that. It’s just hard not to remember the old image of her.”
”Sir Kian, Lady Sarah is someone who can shut off her feelings if she needs to. If a former ally is in danger nearby, and she ends up leaving us, she’ll probably take weapons and armor with her. We can’t let our guard down.”
”I agree. But I can’t really tell her to fight with a wooden sword and common clothes. She’s strong enough to kill a dozen soldiers in a single leap. I think giving her some decent iron sword and light armor is enough.”
”You decided to help her, Sir Kian, so please take care of her until the end. Just don’t spend too much money. If she runs off later, it’ll come back as a financial loss. That’s all I have to say.”
”I understand, I got it. But really, you all have been with Sarah longer than I have, and yet you’re so cold. Is it because your memories have been eaten away just right?”
”That might be true, but…”
Natra and Rufna exchanged glances.
Rufna let out a small sigh and turned to Kian.
”Master, when it comes to women, they can be much more calculating than men when the moment calls for it. Lady Sarah is kind, but she can be too kind, which might lead to her betraying people. You should always keep that in mind.”
”Of course, we’re watching out so she doesn’t come to harm, Master. But if you stay alert on your own, it will lighten our load. You shouldn’t trust any female warrior monk who isn’t on your side──surely, Sir Kian knows this saying?”
