Chapter 10 Lil ②
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
I had successfully used Allure¹ on the wolf, gaining a submissive and loyal companion. But first things first-what should I do now? It is going to be a huge pain if she does not have a name. I should start there…
Grrrrrrrrumble.
The “hunger demon” in my stomach set off a loud protest.
Come to think of it, I had not eaten a single thing since the meal I had right before my training started.
…Wait? I have a weird feeling like I did put something in my mouth recently, but that is probably just my imagination.
Anyway, “you cannot fight on an empty stomach,” as they say.
”Um, hey. Think you could bring me something to eat?”
I made my request to her. She is a wolf, but she is clearly a female, so “her” feels right.
”Woof!”
She wagged her tail and gave a sharp bark that practically screamed “I am on it!” before vanishing into the depths of the forest.
I waited for a short while. When she returned, she was dragging the corpse of a Goblin. She had probably hunted it down herself. She dropped the Goblin at my feet and wagged her tail furiously, practically begging for a gold star.
My face twitched as I forced out a thank you.
”…………Ah, thanks.”
”Woof!”
She seemed genuinely thrilled to be of use, wagging her tail even harder. Honestly, she acted more like a dog than a wolf.
Still… how am I supposed to eat a Goblin? Do not tell me I have to go at it raw? The moment the thought crossed my mind, my right arm moved of its own accord and began to turn a deep, ink-black.
”Wait, what? WHOA!?”
My arm began to warp and shift. How do I even describe this? The shape was a dead ringer for the Predation² form of a certain “God-Eating” sword from that one game.
My palm split wide like a gaping maw and I-or rather, the arm-tore into the Goblin’s corpse. I could hear the sickening sound of bones being pulverized by teeth coming from inside my own limb. Once it had swallowed everything, my arm returned to normal as if nothing had happened. My sleeve was not even torn.
What the hell was that…?
Was that Predation from the Gluttony³ category?
Disturbed, I pulled up my Status to check.

My stats had gone up, though only by a tiny amount.
I decided to re-read the description for Gluttony.
> [Predation]
> Category: Gluttony (Active)
> Effect: Acquire the stats and skills of the consumed target. Note: Only the base (initial) stats are added, and skills are acquired at Lv1. (Skills without levels are acquired as-is). Predation can be performed via the “Predation Arm” or through oral consumption. If a target is consumed while still alive, the user acquires their total current Status instead of just base values.
…I see. Since that Goblin was already dead, I only got its base starting stats. Not that I am exactly thrilled at the idea of eating a Goblin while it is still alive.
A “Goblin Sashimi” platter sounds like a nightmare.
…Wait, no. I just have to let the “Predation Arm” do the eating. But then again, Goblins have such low stats that it probably does not matter much whether they are alive or dead.
Also, it looks like that Goblin I just ate did not have a single skill worth taking.
Anyway.
”Alright, from now on, I need you to bring me food three times a day. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Goblins are fine, but try to find other monsters too.”
”Woof-woof!”
Was that a “You got it, boss!”? Even with Language Comprehension, it seems I cannot actually translate wolf barks.

Now that my stomach was settled, it was time to figure out her name.
She was sitting perfectly still, staring up at me.
Yeah, since she is a wolf, she needs a name that fits.
Rou, Rouga, Garo… nah, those sound too masculine. Especially Garo-I feel like I would get in trouble for using that one. Maybe “Lang,” the Chinese word for wolf? No, does not fit her vibe.
…I really suck at this naming thing.
Oh, she is looking at me with those “I am so excited!” eyes. And the tail wagging. The pressure is real…
Okay, let us look toward mythology. Wolves show up in myths all the time. The most famous one has to be Fenrir from Norse mythology. The eldest son of Loki and Angrboda-the giant wolf destined to swallow the All-Father Odin during Ragnarok.
Wait. Fenrir?
Fen-rir… Fen… Lil?
That is it! Let let us go with that!
”Your name is Lil. It comes from Fenrir, the wolf that swallows even the Gods. Do you like it?”
For someone with zero naming sense, I thought it was a pretty slick choice. Her reaction, however-
”Woof-woof! Woof!”
She nodded her head emphatically, her tail whipping back and forth like a propeller. It looked like she loved it. Seriously, does she actually understand human speech?
”Woof!”
Lil lunged at me and started licking my face.
”Ah-hey! Stop it! That tickles!”
Even if it was mostly the effect of Allure, Lil was completely devoted to me. My very first companion. Since we were here, I decided to officially make her my Kin¹⁷.
The Kin skill belongs to the Pride category. There is a similar skill called Servitude¹⁸, but they are worlds apart. A Kin is a partner-more like family. We can share and transfer skills. Servitude, on the other hand, turns the target into a literal slave. You cannot share skills, but the mental shackles are much stronger than a Kin’s. I can choose either one at will.
Of course, I have zero intention of ever making a human my “Kin.” Especially not my former classmates. For them… well, “Slave” sounds about right.
I am getting ahead of myself. I will make Lil my Kin. The benefits are way better, and honestly, I just do not want to treat her like a slave.
”Lil. From this day forward, do you swear to stand by my side-by Sasaki Natsumi’s side-as a friend, a partner, and a loved one? If you do, then walk with me as my Kin.”
”Woof!”
I took that as a “Yes.”
I felt a sensation like an invisible chain snapping into place, linking us together. Lil was now my Kin.
”Alright. I am looking forward to it, Lil.”
”Woof!”
We were bound by a bond that could never be severed. That chain… it felt just like Gleipnir¹⁹, the legendary binding that held Fenrir himself.
* * *
We could not stay in this clearing forever. If that Barghest found us again, it would be over. We moved deeper into the thicket, looking for somewhere easier to hide.
Every move sent a jolt of pain through me, like my body had forgotten how to function, but I could still walk. I followed behind Lil.
Seriously, I am getting winded just from walking a few yards. My stamina is absolute garbage.
Eventually, we reached a massive tree that had to be at least five hundred years old. Its trunk was hollowed out, providing a perfect shelter from the elements.
I peeked inside, only to find we had a roommate.
It was a puppy with ash-gray fur and golden eyes. No-it was a wolf cub. It was so fluffy it looked like a plush toy.
”Hey, Lil. Is this your kid?”
”Woof!”
Lil barked in affirmation.
Oh, so she is a mom. I wondered for a second why the cub was all the way out here, but it was not like the answer would change anything. I crawled into the hollow.
”Uh… excuse me for intruding…”
…Who was I even talking to?
The puppy-er, cub-stared at me intently. It was strangely well-behaved. No growling, no baring of teeth. Just pure curiosity.
I sat down next to it. The floor was covered in a soft layer of leaf mold. It was not a bad seat, but it was a bit damp; I could feel the moisture starting to seep into my pants. Cannot be picky, I guess.
The cub tilted its head. The gesture was so unfairly cute that I instinctively reached out to pet it. It did not pull away. It just let me scrub its head, narrowing its eyes in pure bliss.
Oh no. This is dangerous. This is “moe” levels of dangerous. I could stay here petting this thing forever.
Seeing this, Lil crawled in and started rubbing her head against me too, as if demanding her turn.
Wolves do not usually act like this, do they? Allure is terrifyingly effective.
I could not help but let out a dry laugh as I reached out to pet Lil too. She narrowed her eyes and wagged her tail, looking just as happy as her cub.
Man… is this fluffy heaven?
I spent a good while mindlessly petting the two of them before remembering that this cub was Lil’s daughter. I picked the little thing up. She just tilted her head as if asking, “What are we doing now?”
I checked a certain spot to be sure.
Yep. A girl.
I set the cub back down.
Since she is Lil’s kid, I cannot leave her without a name either. If it had been a boy, I would have gone with something cool, but since it is a girl…
I should probably stick with the Norse theme. Let us see…
”…Leki.”
The name just popped into my head. From Freki, another wolf from the myths.
It sounds cute enough for a girl.
”Your name is Leki! Got it? Leki!”
”Yip?”
I had officially named her, but judging by the look on Leki’s face, she had absolutely no idea what was going on.

Summary:
Sasaki Natsumi tames a wolf, names her Lil, and discovers her cub, Leki. He uses a gruesome ‘Predation’ skill to eat a Goblin corpse, realizing it boosts his stats. Natsumi officially binds Lil as his ‘Kin,’ establishing a deep, family-like connection as they hide from the Barghest.
—
Character Insight:
Natsumi shows a clear divide between his ruthless survival instincts (eating a goblin with a mutated arm) and his lingering humanity (refusing to treat his wolf companion as a slave). His choice of ‘Kin’ over ‘Servitude’ highlights a desire for genuine connection in a world where he feels betrayed by his own kind.”
—
Behind the Scene:
The author uses ‘Fenrir’ and ‘Freki’ to ground the fantasy world’s monsters in recognizable Norse mythology, a common trope in Japanese light novels to signify power and coolness.
