Vital-Master v3c45

Volume 3 Chapter 45

”It looks like this floor’s a Storm Dungeon, huh?” I said.

The first floor of the Phase Six dungeon was a vast grassland swept by violent gales.

I said “this floor” because the upper levels of Phase Six never stayed the same. Every time you entered, a different layout awaited you, making advance preparation nearly impossible. Back when we first started conquering it, the constantly changing floors gave us a hard time. These days, though, it was little more than a gimmick. Part of that was because we had already seen nearly every variation the dungeon could throw at us.

After challenging Phase Six countless times, every pattern felt familiar, and the methods for clearing them were already ingrained in us. More importantly, we had long since reached the point where brute force worked on any upper floor. I had cleared the dungeon all the way to the deepest levels more times than I could count, and Mana and Sakurako-san had finally become strong enough to follow me there. Minami-chan, Haruka-san, and Maria-san could already breeze through the lower levels, and I was hoping they would make it all the way to the bottom with me this run.

”As usual, attacks from above are a pain here,” I said. “Minami-chan, can I leave them to you?”

”Yayyy! I’m super happy right now!” Minami replied. “Minami will do her absolute best!”

The Storm Dungeon’s biggest nuisance was the Ultimate Ugly Sylphs riding the winds overhead. Hidden among the raging gale, they launched powerful wind blades that were difficult for most people to spot1. Thanks to my heavily enhanced Perception Ability, I could track them easily, and by now the others could avoid their attacks without much trouble as well. Besides, even if someone like me—or a frontline fighter like Maria-san—took a hit head-on, it would barely hurt. Still, the constant harassment was annoying, so I had Minami-chan use (Sky-Run) and carve through the Ultimate Ugly Sylphs circling overhead. Even in Phase Six, there was no monster on the upper floors capable of escaping her attacks. The aerial assaults stopped almost immediately, and we pressed deeper into the dungeon.

For about fifteen minutes, we advanced through the floor, occasionally having Minami-chan deal with monsters in the sky while swatting aside the powerful creatures that emerged on the ground2.

 ”Maria-san.”

”At once, sir. It shall be done.”

Maria-san stepped one pace ahead of us and raised her greatsword. The next instant, her body slid backward across the ground.

 An Ultimate Invisible Goblin.

Originally a powerful monster from the nineteenth floor of Phase Five, it had become even more troublesome thanks to its invisibility. Between its concealment and the howling wind masking its presence, it had caused us no shortage of headaches in the beginning. Once you learned its tricks, though, it became easy prey.

 ”Haaaaaaah! Take this!”

The moment Maria-san halted its charge, Haruka-san sprang forward and brought her mace crashing down. The goblin exploded without her even needing a Skill.

That was how overwhelming our current levels were compared to the monsters on Phase Six’s upper floors.

”Just as expected. Let’s keep moving.”

And so, we continued through the first floor at breakneck speed.

”So the tenth floor’s an ice-and-snow zone,” I said. “These are actually pretty annoying.”

Why? Because no matter how strong we’d become, the cold still bit at exposed skin.

We barely took any damage from fire- or ice-attribute attacks these days, but that did not mean we had lost our sense of temperature. If the air outside was twenty degrees below zero, it still felt freezing. Our bodies had become absurdly durable, so frostbite, illness, and freezing to death were no longer concerns, yet that did not mean I wanted to spend my time trudging through arctic conditions.

”If we didn’t have the [Black Ball], conquering Phase Six would be a real pain. Sakurako-san, if you would.”

 ”Yeah, got it, Kanade. (Release)!”

The [Black Ball] Sakurako-san carried contained a wide assortment of [Dungeon Drop Equipment]. Most of it was top-tier gear I had obtained in Phase Six through Drop Rate Increase. The equipment offered more than simple defensive power; many pieces came with powerful special effects as well.

This time, she pulled out [Phoenix Bikinis] for the girls.

The fiery bikinis covered only the bare essentials, but no matter how extreme the temperature became, the wearer would not feel even the slightest chill. For myself, I equipped the [Emperor Blaze Lizard Armor]. The [Phoenix Bikini] actually provided stronger protection, and it was not as though I could not wear one, but seeing a guy run around in it would have been a little strange.

Surrounded by five beautiful women in blazing-hot swimwear, I continued advancing through the tenth floor. Before long, a deafening roar echoed through the frozen landscape.

”Looks like a Chase Avalanche is coming.”

”That’s a troublesome one,” Sakurako said. “It won’t hurt us, but getting buried under all that snow is a hassle.”

”Yeah. If we had fire skills, we could melt it, but surprisingly none of us do. It’s a pretty common ability, too. Only Ruri-san had one, right?”

”Yes, that’s correct,” Sakurako replied. “Though Maria’s (Divine Sword Absolute Severance) should be enough even without an elemental advantage. If it keeps charging straight at us, we can always use Dungeon Energy Mastery.”

”Understood! I’ll make sure to stop it!” Maria declared.

Maria-san leaped to the front of the party.

Before her rose a colossal avalanche over a hundred meters tall, resembling a towering tsunami of snow. Back when we first challenged this floor, there had been nothing we could do except get swallowed whole.

 ”Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!! (Divine Sword Absolute Severance)!!!!”

A colossal blade of light burst from Maria-san’s greatsword and cleaved into the oncoming avalanche.

The power of her Phase Six Skill was enough to halt its advance. The enormous wall of snow shuddered, stalled, and froze in place before its momentum vanished completely. Deprived of the force driving it forward, the avalanche-type monster dissolved into smoke and disappeared.

 Summary:

Kanade and his party navigate the treacherous first floor of the ‘Phase Six’ dungeon, utilizing Minami’s aerial combat and Maria’s sword skills to bypass threats. They proceed to the tenth floor, facing an extreme cold environment where they equip specialized gear to handle the temperature. The chapter concludes with Maria successfully neutralizing a massive Chase Avalanche with her signature skill.

 —

 Trivia:

The dungeon floor layouts in Phase Six randomize upon each entry, preventing long-term preparation.

Kanade’s ‘Perception Ability’ is specifically described as super-enhanced.

The [Black Ball] functions as a portable inventory for high-tier dungeon drops.

The Chase Avalanche is technically a monster rather than a natural phenomenon.
