Volume 11 Chapter 5 Spider’s Footprints

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

Lizamis Hermit had been the previous Demon Lord.

A hundred years prior, he founded a nation that blazed bright for barely a decade.

In his youth, he was destined for greatness—he traveled the world, made friends on his journey, and used his partner’s strength to overcome countless hardships.

He deepened his knowledge, and through his many achievements, came to be called the Great Sage.

The journey ended, and he returned home.

His wisdom won the hearts of the people in his homeland.

He was elevated to ruler by popular acclaim. That was Lizamis.

He had become Demon Lord from Great Sage.

Beneath Demon Lord Lizamis were lieutenants called the Four Heavenly Kings.

This system was Lizamis’s creation. A position that might be called “great general”—the Four Heavenly Kings system was readily embraced by the demonkin and the other races swarming the Demon Continent.

The Four Heavenly Kings became objects of envy and aspiration, and also sparked fierce internal rivalries beneath the surface.

When the Council of the United Kingdoms was established, this system was revived due to strong demand.

 Demon Lord Lizamis.

A man with sharp political skill; one who advanced the civilization of the Demon Continent.

The first to utilize magic stone resources at the state level, and the one who made the headstrong other races relent through shared profit.

Well-versed in magical theory, he showed the talent that had earned him the name Great Sage even after he became king.

He allocated state finances to research funding, ultimately discovering the existence of spirits and elements.

A man who ruled the Demon Continent with wisdom.

Sincere. Humble. Without the cruelty common to kings. Sociable. Good-natured.

Yet having such charisma that even the warlike demonkin followed him without question.

Thus, many admired him; even after his reign ended, some still looked back on him with fondness.

The Great Sage who journeyed with the Hero.

And the king who united the demonkin.

Yet there was still another side to him.

His eldest daughter, Francesca. His second daughter, Giuseppina.

A father who loved his two daughters.

 Lizamis had two wives.

One was a member of the Four Heavenly Kings—a daughter of nobility he had admired since childhood, his childhood friend.

When Lizamis returned from his adventures, he pleaded relentlessly until she agreed to marry him.

They were in love, but were not blessed with children.

The other was his first wife’s younger sister. His sister-in-law.

While his marriage to the eldest daughter faced considerable opposition, one day Lizamis learned that her younger sister had been kidnapped.

Bandits had long plagued the Demon Continent, and his sister-in-law had fallen victim to that tragedy.

Lizamis used his contract skill, Salvage1, which let him retrieve past information, and found the girl.

He infiltrated the bandits’ hideout alone and succeeded in rescuing her unharmed.

This incident was the deciding factor, and his marriage to his childhood friend was finally approved.

The younger sister also wanted to marry Lizamis.

Subjected to her passionate advances, he soon fell into a romantic relationship.

There was some upheaval afterward, but ultimately he married both sisters.

His second wife bore him two children.

In later eras, it came to be said that those who sat upon the Demon Lord’s throne were fated to lose their wives early.

For such had been Lizamis, and such would be Dainheorl after him.

Both of his wives perished during the Second Human-Demon Great War.

Lizamis was a king, yet also a father who loved his two wives and daughters.

He continued to worry about his daughters’ futures until the very end, it was said.

Even after he learned that he was a slave to fate.

”You were investigating me, weren’t you.”

It was at Demon Lord Castle.

When he fell to a treacherous blade, the one standing there was a woman he himself had raised up—

One of the Four Heavenly Kings, the Western General Parl Forestier.

 His end came by betrayal.

”…That beast you unleashed on the Beast Country—it was you, wasn’t it…”

She was a Forest Person who still looked like a girl.

Yet her eyes held a thousand years of wisdom.

Seeing that girl’s smile, Lizamis ground his teeth.

”Come to think of it, you always treated the matter of the World Tree seed brought into the Abyss as if it had nothing to do with you. I thought you were simply uninterested—but you already knew, didn’t you. No, you knew even then that it was growing into a living thing.”

”Precisely. What I unleashed upon the Beast Country was but one of its terminals.”

”…What in the world are you trying to achieve by doing this? What do you gain by targeting the Beast Country? Are you trying to bring about an age of war?”

 Attack the Human Continent.

 Dominate the Beast Continent.

Western General Parl was an extremist within this kingdom, and had been advocating for war ever since her appointment.

She had not been like this when they first met.

She had been a gentle, wise woman well-versed in many subjects.

But once she gained power, she revealed her true nature.

”This birth was merely an experiment. It would be somewhat inconvenient to have it born on the Demon Continent, would it not? So I conducted it in the Beast Country instead.”

”What…? What in the world are you…?”

Lizamis was pierced by a blow from behind.

And rapidly, his strength began to drain from his body.

”You cannot move now. Your soul will soon depart.”

 ”Ha…?”

”I shall use your body to move the nation. I have already sown enough sparks. Once you give the command, the Second Human-Demon Great War shall commence.”

”Wha—what are you saying? Have you lost your mind?!”

The sparks, in other words, were the will for war.

Throughout the Demon Continent, people had spread talk about how cruel and hateful humans were.

Parl had stirred up division, angered the righteous, pushed them toward war, and fanned the flames until conflict broke out.

All of it had happened at ground level, beyond the king’s notice.

”I have much to do. So many tasks to accomplish. I intended to take the long view—to see whether you or the next generation would grow favorable toward war. But once you set your sights on me… I cannot allow you to live having learned what you were better off not knowing. You must die here.”

”…Even if you do that, it will not end as you wish.”

Demon Lord Lizamis wore an expression of conviction.

Parl furrowed her brow at his words.

”I salvaged the Unopened Tower. I know about you. About what happened to Forestier.”

”……I see. So that is the ability of the one called Great Sage.”

She laughed like an old woman in a young girl’s voice—keekee—though she looked like a girl with a bright future ahead.

Then she glared at Lizamis with fierce intensity.

Her eyes filled with powerful obsession.

”Now then. Let us proceed with an experiment. The experiment of transferring your soul into a doll.”

 ”What?!”

”This technique was developed by my younger sister a thousand years ago. But whether due to an experiment gone wrong, she inadvertently lost her own life. This technique has already been proven by my own hand, but as a single result, it is hardly conclusive. The construction of the spell requires considerable magical power on the subject’s part, making experimentation itself difficult. But for His Majesty the Demon Lord, that should pose no obstacle.”

 ”St—stop…!!”

That was Lizamis’s final moment as a king.

When he came to, he was inside a doll.

His body had been stolen, and his soulless form had become Parl’s puppet.

His time as a doll felt terrifyingly long.

No one came to rescue him—after all, Lizamis was still alive in the eyes of the world.

Eventually, Lizamis’s body was struck down, the war ended, and time passed.

But he remained only a doll, seeing nothing, hearing nothing—only his consciousness persisting in that void.

He did not know where he was.

How many years had passed. What had become of his nation.

Were his wives and daughters alive and well.

The next time his vision cleared… he found himself confused by the sensation of limbs.

 ”W-Wait… I’m a spider!? Gross!?”

He didn’t know the exact reason.

But there had been a doll nearby, so he reasoned that his soul had somehow transferred at some point.

When he awoke, he was inside a load of cargo.

His soul had spilled from the doll where it had been casually piled and left toppled over.

By chance, he concluded, it had taken up residence in a nearby spider.

Lizamis, now a spider, crawled out of the crate, leapt from the carriage, and returned to the world once more.

He learned the sensations of his new body, dealt with natural enemies—insects and animals—and traveled with strides far shorter than when he had been human.

Feeling the vast distance from human civilization, he set his course for his former castle.

When at last, after a long, long time, he grasped the reality of his situation, Lizamis—in a body that could not weep—was crushed by despair.

 ”Everything is gone.”

The Human-Demon Great War had taken place.

The invasion of the Human Continent had failed. Instead, the Hero had counterattacked, and Lizamis had fallen.

Many had died, it seemed. Humans and demonkin alike.

Those who had served as the Four Heavenly Kings were no more, and the nation he had built had crumbled.

Even having lost his body, his skill contracts remained.

He scoured the remnants of debris and salvaged memories.

He learned that his two wives had died trying desperately to protect him.

They had always been concerned for Lizamis.

Not knowing that the Lizamis they protected was but an empty shell being puppeted by Parl.

 ”…Forgive me…”

But the fate of his daughters remained unknown.

When war drew near, it was thought that his wives had sent them away to safety.

But would descendants of the Demon Lord’s bloodline be permitted to live?

Not just the enemy—even allies would see them as a threat now that the nation had fallen. They would be targets for those who might seek to use them.

So if they had been spirited away, it must have been to another world or to a remote region beyond prying eyes.

His journey continued on those long, tiny spider legs.

But it did not continue for long.

For Lizamis had contracted with a demon, and that demon—learning of his revival—finally stirred herself and descended from the Crimson Spire to aid him.

Those who contracted with demons must offer their souls after death. She had been waiting for Lizamis.

But the answer she brought was one he struggled to comprehend.

 ”Oh… both of them… are dead…”

”I’m sorry, Your Majesty. I was too late.”

It was Lilies who told Lizamis of his daughters’ end.

The primordial demon he had met on his journey long ago, and contracted with.

The one who had granted Lizamis the Power of Perception2, and had been his friend.

”Your daughter, your eldest, Francesca—she was killed by the Fairy Queen Palze. But her body has never been found. The only proof of her death is the Fairy Queen’s own testimony. And the research on spirits that you sought—the one she supposedly inherited—its location remains a mystery. Her younger sister Giuseppina, the only one who might have known where she was, has become a fairy. She no longer holds memories of her past life. And her remaining body was likely devoured by the fairies.”

It was said that after the Demon Lord’s Army disbanded, his eldest daughter Francesca had become known as a witch.

There was talk that somewhere, someone had once researched fire spirits, but the details were a complete mystery.

His younger daughter, Giuseppina, had followed the same path as her father, Lizamis, and her older sister—becoming a Dark Witch who immersed herself in the study of ghosts. Though they were his daughters, both were also Lizamis’s disciples.

But Giuseppina had been caught up in the trouble between her sister and the Fairies, and it cost her life. The Fairy Queen dragged out Giuseppina’s soul, made her pregnant with it, and forced her to be reborn as a Fairy named Cupiria.

”That’s rough. Losing your wife and all your kids like that.”

 ”…”

”Gonna get revenge on that Forest Person? Or maybe the Fairy Queen?”

 ”…”

Lizamis, now a spider, no longer possessed the power he’d wielded as the Demon Lord. Losing his power had cost him the conquering spirit he’d once carried. To begin with, he wasn’t even sure how long this body would hold out. Spiders, he’d heard, could live up to forty years or so—but could Lizamis expect the same? Revenge was out of the question; the real question was how much longer he had to live.

Besides, his feelings toward Parl were deeply complicated. A pitiful princess of a fallen kingdom. She had reached the Unopened Tower, salvaged its secrets, and learned of her obsession—so how was he supposed to process that?

Regret filled most of his heart. At the same time, he felt as though he was already as good as dead. He already knew there was life after death in this world. His wives should be waiting for him beyond the Grand Cathedral. So shouldn’t he return to their side as well? Though he had no idea how long Lilies would take to release him.

This spider body was merely delaying the inevitable. Everything was over. He could leave the rest to those who came after. Lizamis shouldn’t have to fight anymore.

”I want to meet this daughter called Cupiria.”

He could die at any moment. But he didn’t want to leave before his daughter—not without fulfilling his duty as a father. He had to meet her. He had to go see her. If Giuseppina—no, if Cupiria—was still alive.

”You there, Fairy girl. Would you be the one they call Kupira?”

”Oh my? A talking spider, how rare. A fully insectoid Fairy in this day and age is quite the novelty too.”

She was a girl too monstrous to call human. White hair, skin far too pale. Pitch-black eyes, with mismatched pupils—one gold, one the color of the night sky. Purple-red horns that seemed to cling to her head.

A Fairy who wore the shape of a human, almost like a human. The sight of her made his shoulders slump. She was the very picture of a cursed existence. This was the end result of the day Lizamis had fallen. This was what had become of the daughter he’d cherished—the thought made him want to hang his head.

”My name is Lizamis. In my former life, I was your teacher.”

”…Teacher? And you’re a SPIDER? What are you even saying…?”

”Whatever it is, I hear you’ve been studying ghosts and magic in this orchard. Even reborn, you’ve become a scholar—color me surprised. Which means I must guide you. If you aim to be a witch, there’s no one whose knowledge you need more than mine.”

”…Is this some kind of past-life scam spiders are running these days? Sorry, but I’m a human-Fairy, you know? Not exactly the type to pop out spider babies for you.”

 ”I’M NOT HITTING ON YOU!!”

Fairies only resembled human forms. They were counted among the humanoid races because of their shape, but their minds were said to be far removed from the civilized world’s human races. Beastkin Clan were humans who had acquired beast factors; Flower Humans were plants with humanoid factors. So perhaps human-Fairies were best understood as Fairies who had acquired humanoid factors.

During the First Great Human-Demon War, the dead could no longer leave this world. Factors spilled from those who died and became undead, and the living unknowingly absorbed them. Countless races were then born from creatures who took in factors from other beings. Of course, races with too few numbers would have gone extinct soon after birth. The Beastkin Clan and Beast Demon Tribe only began their histories because they flourished.

After the war ended, when Goddess Teekua established the Otherworlds, the Abyss began processing factors. The nightmare of factor contamination was resolved. But in exchange, different human races began arriving from the nine connected Otherworlds. The Incubi/Succubi of the Crimson Spire, the Forest People of the Void, the Fishkin of the Sanctum, the Earth Humans of the Fortress—these were all humanoid races that had come from completely different worlds.

The Fairy Clan had also come from the same world as the Forest People, though originally, Fairies were said to have taken many different forms. But now they all had human forms and were counted among the humanoid races. In other words, the Fairy ecosystem had changed since the Otherworlds were established.

The Fairy Clan had attempted to invade the Abyss. Among the beings that came to this world after the Otherworlds were established, only the Fairy Clan had the chance to absorb factors from other creatures. Perhaps that was when human-Fairies were born. The fact that insect and fruit Fairies were palm-sized but human-shaped was not a direct change from factors—they had simply begun evolving toward the human-Fairy form. With the birth of human-Fairies, the Fairies of the void world were gradually replaced by humanoid forms.

”Thinking about it that way, the Fairies who probably threw the World Tree seed into the Abyss…”

”The Abyss? What are you talking about?”

 ”Oh, never mind…”

The Fairy princess turned her mysterious eyes toward him. Lizamis hurriedly stretched out his silk on the spot and made something like a bouquet. He presented it to her.

”What’s this string garbage?” she said.

The spider tipped over, utterly crushed.

This child was Giuseppina. Lizamis understood. Cupiria was, without a doubt, Lizamis’s daughter. She bore no resemblance to her past self at all. But he knew it. He felt it.

Which meant Lizamis had to guide her. Not as a father, of course—that role was no longer needed. She was now a stranger. But as a teacher, that would be fine. He would simply wish for her happiness, and search for a path that might let her find a life like a proper human’s. So that when he reunited with the wives waiting beyond the Grand Cathedral, he could hold his head high.

 ”Mmm~, so happy~~… Head hurrrts…”

”…What in the world are you doing?”

In the clattering carriage, a Fairy lay curled up, clutching her head. She’d spread her long white hair out messily, thrashing in her sleep until it was a complete tangle. Reeking of alcohol, Kupu was looking decidedly unwell. And the man told to keep an eye on her was also sprawled across the seat.

”All because I taught her about alcohol to introduce her to human culture… and now she’s a full-blown drinker. Oh, what a mess.”

”This is your fault, you know. Ugh, my head hurts like crazy. What the hell is Fairy alcohol anyway? I got the worst hangover ever.”

”Well, it’s essentially fermented Fairy-fruit sludge, you see. Drinking that is like drinking Fairies themselves. Even this old spider in his prime wouldn’t touch that stuff.”

 ”Wait… I drank Fairies?”

Whatever he’d imagined, the man’s face went pale, and—urrrrgh—he vomited a rainbow.

”Not in the carriage!” the spider grandpa shouted frantically.

”Hmm~, what is it, brother-in-law? Sorry, but I’m not feeling well today. If you’re looking for a night visit, could you take a rain check?”

”It’s noon. The time for being half-asleep is long past.”

With a deft motion using his leg—as if pinching his own nose—Lizamis activated a skill over the vomit. The rainbow dove through the carriage floor and splattered onto the ground below as they traveled.

The vomit-stained carriage was now spotless. It still smelled a little, maybe. After demonstrating cleaning mastery that would make any maid in the world jealous, he began slapping Kupu’s cheeks with his legs. But spider legs lacked attack power, and she didn’t seem to be waking up anytime soon.

”Mnn♡, you’re so passionate this early. But brother-in-law, your lips feel strangely… hairy.”

”What kind of dream are you having, you lovesick Fairy!! An unmarried girl shouldn’t be saying such shameless things in her sleep!!”

He drummed her cheeks with two legs. Continuing the rhythmic slapping, the witch finally opened her eyes. But her drowsy expression held not a shred of the dignity befitting the feared Forbidden Witch.

 ”…Morning…?”

”Indeed. Rise and wash your face—there’s a basin I can conjure. We’re almost at Orrid, so we need to disguise ourselves. Wouldn’t want them to suspect a demon is trying to sneak in.”

”We’re already there?! You should’ve woken me sooner. Wow, I finally made it to a human city! I’m so moved, I’m so excited!! I’ve only ever seen them in books, so I’ve been looking forward to this forever!!”

”It’s not your first time, though.”

”What are you talking about? You know I was holed up in the Void the whole time on the Fairy Queen’s orders. This is my first time in a human city.”

 ”…”

Kupu stuck her head out of the carriage entrance and peered outside. The Beastkin soldiers following behind stared in surprise. Ignoring them, Lizamis hopped onto the Klock where he was lying.

”You too—no sleeping in. Get up.”

 ”Hnh?”

As the man rose groggily, Lizamis hopped over to sit beside him.

”If alcohol brought you two closer, that’s fine, but seeing you like this makes me worry. She’s exactly as you see—wild, free-spirited, and utterly selfish.”

”Yaawwn, you talking about Kupu? If you’re that worried, just take her back to the Void. And take that brat witch Kupira with you while you’re at it.”

Lizamis smacked the man’s knee in a comedic retort.

”This old spider is in this body, you see. I’ve no idea how much longer I’ve got. I know it’s unreasonable to ask, but if possible, I’d like to see my grandchildren before I die.”

 ”…Huh? What’s with the sudden talk…”

With a muddled consciousness and a pounding headache, Klock was confused by the strangely weighty statement.

”…You want me to find you a female spider of the same species? I don’t know much about spiders, so I can’t promise I’ll find you a bride candidate. How long do spiders take to lay eggs anyway? Wouldn’t you have to work pretty hard to see grandkids?”

 ”I WASN’T TALKING ABOUT THAT!!”

 —

 Summary:

A tragic historical exposition reveals Lizamis’s rise from Great Sage to Demon Lord, his happy family life with two wives and daughters, and his ultimate betrayal by his trusted general Parl. After his soul is transferred into a doll and later a spider, he awakens to find his kingdom destroyed, his wives dead, and his daughters’ fates unknown. His ancient demon ally Lilies finally descends to inform him that both daughters are gone—Francesca killed (or vanished) by the Fairy Queen, and Giuseppina transformed into a memoryless fairy.

Lizamis, a former Demon Lord now trapped in a spider’s body, grieves the loss of his wives and daughters while deciding to seek out his reincarnated daughter Cupiria. After a tense meeting where Cupiria rejects his attempt to reconnect, a time skip reveals a comedic carriage scene where the hungover fairy Kupu and the exasperated Klock bicker with Lizamis about alcohol and misunderstandings. The chapter ends with Lizamis expressing his desire to see grandchildren before he dies, only for Klock to hilariously misinterpret this as a request to find a female spider bride.
