Volume 1 Chapter 4 Supply Replenishment (Robbery)
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
I left the rundown house. Quietly, I moved toward the house in front of me, listening carefully for any sign of people inside.
There was no noise. I didn’t expect much in such a poor house, and I saw no candle or light burning.
I couldn’t tell how many people were inside.
The sky was clear. The white moon shone, tilting a little at the top of the sky.
If I wanted to run away from the village, my time limit was sunrise. But now, I had plenty of time.
I pulled out my knife and slowly opened the door. It opened easily.
This was a countryside village, so people didn’t care much about locks. Actually, this door didn’t even have a lock.
I looked inside through the open door. There was no light source.
When I pushed the door open, it made a loud creaking sound. The door frame was bad. I had no choice but to open it wide in one breath. The sound got louder.
I stopped and listened. No sounds from inside. I felt uneasy, but hunger pushed me forward. I decided to keep going.
What was with this house? Boxes were scattered everywhere.
I went inside and looked around.
Besides the stairs to the second floor, there were boxes all over the place.
The only light came from the moon through the window near the door, so it was very dark.
Still, it was clear at a glance that this house was very different from a normal home.
It was more like a warehouse than a house.
I wanted to check inside the boxes, but first, I went upstairs.
I squeezed through the boxes and put one foot on the wooden stairs. The stairs looked like they were made of thin logs. They didn’t creak.
Step by step, I carefully went up, listening for noise.
I reached the second floor.
There was no door upstairs either. Both floors were simple, just one big room each.
There were boxes here too, but smaller than the ones downstairs.
Knives hung on the walls.
At the opposite side of the stairs, there was a desk and a bed. On the bed, I saw a shadow of a person.
I heard soft breathing. He was probably still asleep.
I moved closer to the bed with all my senses alert. The breathing got louder as I got near.
The man on the bed was well built and wore good clothes. Compared to the poor village and this shabby house, his clothes were clearly expensive.
On the desk were pens and a stack of papers.
I guessed this was a merchant’s home.
This place was so rural, it was okay to be careless. But there were too many supplies here, and the man’s clothes were too nice.
He wasn’t a village merchant. Maybe some trader from outside bought this place and turned it into a warehouse? Why would someone come to such a remote village?
…Well, whatever.
It felt strange, but I chose not to worry about it.
Even if he was a merchant with a secret plan, I would never see him again, so it was none of my business.
If he was the kind of person I couldn’t report to the government, it was lucky. He might help hide my tracks.
I looked around to see if anyone else was there. No guards were waiting.
That meant if I took care of this man, I could search safely.
I looked at the tools on the walls.
Knives, knives, spears… I found a rope carelessly lying on a box. It was just what I needed. I decided to borrow it to tie the man up.
Normally, I wanted to use my skill to silence him. But my skill could only be used once a day. I wanted to save it.
I tied the man’s hands and feet, covered his mouth, and put a blanket over him.
I thought he might wake up, but I didn’t care. I wanted to search quickly.
I hoped to find food supplies. Something light and easy to sell would be great.
No one disturbed me, so I opened the boxes boldly and searched inside.
I quickly ate some bread. I found a candle and lit it.
I grabbed some dried food and a nice knife that the merchant probably used. I packed everything into my backpack.
Nice, nice. This was a big find.
You don’t find these things in normal house robberies. Maybe a noble’s house would have this, but that would be too dangerous.
But… I couldn’t find any money.
There were many things I could sell for money, but if they were heavy, it would slow me down. I didn’t want to be greedy.
I only searched the second floor. The first floor was still untouched.
But money and important things are usually kept close to the owner. If I couldn’t find money upstairs, there was probably none.
I could ask the man who started moving under the bed, but I didn’t want to stay longer.
After thinking a moment, I decided to leave.
This was a rare chance, but experience taught me that greed rarely helps.
I looked at the man still unable to get out of bed, went downstairs, and headed to the door.
When I opened the door, it creaked loudly again.
I didn’t need to be careful anymore since I just had to escape. I stepped outside without hesitation and was shocked to see someone standing in front of the door.
”Whoa?! …You’re the one from before?”
It was the person who had been sitting in the broken house earlier.
For some reason, she was waiting in front of the door.
Why was she here? Did she think I wanted to buy something?
She had long pale hair and a small body wrapped in rags. She looked about 13 to 15 years old.
The moonlight showed her face, which was quite pretty.
This person… could be sold.
She wouldn’t take up much space as cargo and might be worth money.
Even without a voice, a young girl had value.
It wasn’t planned, but since I couldn’t find money, I decided to steal a slave too.
I quickly made my decision and went back inside through the open door.
Good thing I hadn’t used my skill yet.
I went back upstairs to the merchant.
The merchant had slipped out from under the blanket and was rolling under the bed. His hands and feet were still tied.
I touched the skin on his neck. Maybe he felt danger, because he jumped a little.
The place I touched glowed faintly. Heat flowed into my hand.
A sharp heat ran through my left arm, and the glow disappeared.
…The slave contract mark was complete: Bandit (Plunder).
Thanks for everything, ha ha ha!
A slave can only be sold if they have the slave contract mark. Without it, I would be just a thief.
Without the mark, I couldn’t give forced commands too, and the slave would run away fast.
So, now, I took everything I could: weapons, valuables, food, and the slave. Then I left.
Now, I have to see if the slave will obey my orders.
”Hey, you know what this is, right?”
I stepped outside and showed the contract mark burned on my arm.
