Volume 2 Chapter 10 What Are You Doing?
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
”I’ll return this.”
”Huh? Oh…”
At the entrance of Viscount Fennec’s villa, where they stayed for the night, Tiet handed a weapon to Klock.
It was a simple knife—the same one taken from Klock when Tiet was captured before. It had been his long-time companion.
”While I’m away, you’ll have trouble without a weapon. Here, take this back. Well, I’m off.”
”…Alright.”
With that, Tiet jumped out confidently and headed off.
It looked like she wanted herself to do the work while he relaxed at home. That might be fine, but knowing who he was dealing with, it felt a bit bold. Or maybe it was scary to think about what would come next.
…She’ll probably ask for something in return. He has to be careful with her.
What about the other dagger?
Klock watched Tiet leave, holding the other dagger she hadn’t returned yet—one he got with Adelina.
Until a few days ago, she was an enemy. Somehow, she’d become more like an ally, though he didn’t fully understand how. That was okay, but he wondered how much she would really help.
She probably wasn’t a spy—no point. If she was just tagging along, she wouldn’t oppose the heroes. It didn’t seem like she fought them or anything. Even if she didn’t turn against the heroes, if she just stood there like a scarecrow letting them pass, she wasn’t someone he could trust.
Thinking about Tiet’s place in all this:
Even if she came along on a whim, she wasn’t a strong hope against the hero party. Maybe she’d fight if asked. But if his only ally was her, her help would be unreliable.
For now, it was best to leave things as they were. She was fighting monsters for him, after all. He’d just think of her as a useful monster counter.
”Ah, Sir Klock. Do you need anything?”
Returning to the mansion through the entrance, Michelle called out to him.
It was a little odd for a maid to ask for work. Maybe she wanted to prove herself useful. That was nice, but it also felt like bad manners.
”…If I need anything, I will call you.”
”Ah, I’m sorry… I apologize…”
Her voice was shy and hesitant.
She was probably new to the job. It wasn’t a problem if she was a beginner. So far, she hadn’t caused any serious trouble. But her fragile attitude made Klock uneasy—he worried she might cause some serious mess.
”…Ah, I see. I’m a little thirsty. Please bring me some water to my room.”
”Ah, understood! I’ll bring it right away!”
Since it was a rare chance, Klock decided to ask a favor.
Michelle’s clumsy efforts were probably to get noticed by the strict head maid. It would be harsh to ignore her. It was good to see her trying.
Klock liked having people who served him well. Because of that, he treated the maids kindly.
He accepted Adelina’s voluntary help, but since her slave mark disappeared, he hadn’t fully accepted her yet. He thought her slender body needed rest in a calm place.
He went straight to his room.
Having just finished bathing, it was a bit cold outside. Since his clothes were being washed, Klock wore a borrowed robe and lay down on the bed, feeling weak.
Ah, this bed is so soft. Truly a noble’s villa. If I close my eyes, I might fall asleep right away.
Lately, with everything going on and fatigue, he tended to fall asleep fast after lying down.
As the bath’s warmth faded, his body relaxed and drifted toward sleep.
He tried to keep his eyes open, thinking he shouldn’t sleep, but his eyelids slowly closed. His thoughts became fuzzy, then slipped away as sleep took him.
Footsteps came softly.
Klock heard them but didn’t wake. His brain ignored the noise.
”Excuse me! Water… Huh?”
Michelle hurried into the room.
She called out to Klock, but he showed no sign of waking. He was still awake but too tired to move.
”…Um, I’ll leave the water here…”
She spoke quietly, careful.
Michelle probably thought Klock was too tired to be disturbed. Klock waited silently for her to leave.
But as she placed the water, Michelle suddenly tripped on empty floor space.
”Ah!”
The glass flew through the air.
To Klock, it looked like slow motion. The glass tipped toward the bed. Water spilled, splashing over Klock’s face below.
”Ugh?! ── Ughh!!!?”
The glass fell on the bedding but didn’t break.
Klock woke up, splashed with water. Michelle, panicked, accidentally pushed her face close to the wet mess.
”Ah… cough… ugh?! Gahh, ugh, cough cough──”
”Oh no, a guest, aahh──!!”
Klock jumped up, coughing and gasping.
He struggled as if he’d swallowed poison, while Michelle panicked, moving frantically but doing nothing helpful.
”Cough, cough… you…!”
Soaked and shocked, Klock looked at the maid.
Michelle, unsure what to do, glanced around and started wiping the water on the floor, leaving Klock alone.
She bent down to clean the spill.
”What the hell are you doing?!”
”I-I’m so sorry!!!”
Klock had been calm moments ago, but now he was furious.
He stood, grabbed Michelle’s collar, and pulled her close. Frowning, he got right up to her face and glared.
”Throwing water on a sleeping guest? Do you want to get killed? Huh?!”
”N-no, that’s not it!! P-please forgive me…”
Michelle trembled from Klock’s real anger.
He wasn’t the type to bully a small girl, but he wasn’t calm after this.
”I-I’m sorry. Please forgive me…”
”Huh?! Don’t say sorry, idiot!!”
Klock yanked her collar again and pushed her down on the bed.
Michelle fell face down on the wet sheets. Klock sat on her back and spanked her bottom with force.
Smack!
”That hurts?!”
The sharp sound echoed.
He raised his hand and hit her again.
Smack!!
”It hurts!!”
He kept spanking her, Smack. Smack.
It wasn’t about anything weird—he just wanted to calm his anger. Punching wasn’t an option, so spanking was his way.
”You act all proud when someone’s nice to you!!”
”It hurts, it hurts! Please forgive me!”
After a few more hits, Klock’s hand started hurting too.
He looked down and saw his palm was red. Time to stop.
”…Hey, if you do this again… be ready.”
”Y-yes… I’m sorry…”
He stepped back and warned her.
Michelle quickly stood, bowed her head, protecting her bottom with tearful eyes. She looked very sorry, and Klock’s anger eased a little.
Unbelievable. Who makes such a dumb mistake?
Why did they put her in charge?
After she finished cleaning, Michelle ran off. The head maid, Suzette, came in.
”Dear guest, about tonight’s dinner──”
”…Ah, the dinner. Sorry, I’m not feeling well. Tiet isn’t here, so please tell the Viscount we’ll eat tomorrow.”
Assuming it was an invite, he declined early.
It wasn’t just physical illness; Klock felt emotionally off too. A noble overwhelmed by emotions wouldn’t want a meal. Though refusing on the first night was rude, Suzette accepted it.
”…Understood. I’ll tell Your Lordship. I’ll bring a light meal later.”
”…Yeah. Do that.”
Suzette spoke clearly and confidently.
She left quickly, leaving a faint floral scent behind.
”…Damn. I don’t want to deal with women right now.”
For a moment, Klock thought about blaming Michelle or Suzette, but he was too irritated.
He liked Suzette better, but he’d rather let her handle problems than himself.
He didn’t want to seduce anyone—just needed to relieve stress.
Still, those thoughts faded into frustration.
He hoped nothing bad would happen. For now, he waited patiently in his room.
He thought about visiting Adelina next door but decided not to, so he wouldn’t take out his irritation on her.
Some time passed.
When it was dark outside, Michelle came back with dinner, trembling as she entered.
She looked no better than before. Maybe she couldn’t explain what happened or wanted to hide it.
”…I have a bad feeling. Better keep my distance for now.”
Though it seemed unlikely, Klock stepped aside carefully.
Michelle looked scared, shaking lightly, with faint noises from the tray she carried.
It was fine. Nothing on the floor this time. No chance to trip.
He didn’t know why she fell before, but this time looked safe. Still, he watched closely.
She stepped forward carefully. In front of the table, Michelle—
”…”
Without problems, she placed the tray on it.
”…Phew. No way I’d mess up twice in a row.”
She sounded annoyed at being rushed.
Klock breathed a sigh of relief.
Michelle bowed nervously, looking both anxious and proud to finish the simple task of serving white porridge and dishes.
”…Mm.”
Klock nodded slightly.
As long as she behaved, it was fine. Michelle was a Viscount family maid after all—no need to be harsh. A little spanking was enough.
He relaxed watching her finish. But then, Michelle’s toes caught on table’s foot.
”Ah!”
”Ah!”
Michelle fell like slow motion.
Where did she trip? Why was she tilting? He wondered, but it was too late. She hit the ground with a loud thud.
”Pugyaa!!”
She sprawled on the floor, dragging table’s foot with her fall. The wooden table moved suddenly, sending plates and glasses flying. They smashed and spilled everywhere.
”…What are you doing?”
”…Ouch…”
Klock couldn’t help but comment on how clumsy she was, like she was begging for trouble.
It was as if the world forced her to be clumsy. Maybe it was fate.
This girl… is she really cut out to be a maid?
