Volume 8 Chapter 37 Ecology of Incubi and Succubi

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

 ”A new set of guards…?”

The maid—one of the Majin (T/N: 魔人, demons with horns or other marks of power)—kept her horns hidden as she frowned deeply.

In front of her stood Klock and three young women.

Of course Suzette reacted badly to Klock’s announcement.

All three were women, and her eyes on him grew sharp as knives.

”From Polet Village… Ms. Rachel, Ms. Kaitney. And… Ms. Alice, an adventurer, correct?”

”Yeah. Though the only one meant for battle is Alice. The sisters will be handling… more troublesome tasks.”

Klock explained they’d be assigned to relay orders, carry messages, and investigate within the troop—roles no one else could cover.

But Suzette’s face didn’t soften. The air around her radiated doubt.

”…Is that really necessary? Ms. Meina could do all of that by herself. And Lady Cianie is here as well.”

Klock waved it off. “That’s exactly why I can’t. In an emergency, Meina’s strength has to be kept beside me. Same for Cianie. She’s essential for scouting.”

Until recently, Cianie had been seated at Klock’s side. Now she was out scouting the perimeter.

No one else could spot threats so quickly—her wide-range mana sense combined with high-speed flight let her catch dangerous monsters before they got close.

As a Hero, she had strength unmatched in combat, yet scouting forced her into constant deployment.

She had grumbled at leaving the carriage—leaving Klock—but accepted it in the end.

Klock remembered clearly. During the attack on Polet Village, they had been caught off guard.

If they had noticed the monsters sooner, the damage would have been much less.

Cianie must have had her own regrets when she saw the ruined village.

”Anyway, that’s the reasoning. After weighing who I can actually trust, I picked these three. They’ll ride in my carriage.”

 ”…I see.”

He made it sound like a firm decision, not a proposal she could argue.

But Suzette’s eyes narrowed, suspicious and far from convinced.

Her gaze shifted to the three women.

Rachel and Kaitney quickly looked away, stiff with nerves.

Only Alice kept smiling, grinning like she was having fun.

Finally Suzette looked back at Klock.

”You seem unsettled. Did something happen?”

”…Huh? Do I? Nah. Nothing happened.”

 ”…If you say so.”

Her words were strange, laced with concern.

He had secrets, yes, but he hadn’t let them show. What exactly was she sensing?

 Then—

 ”…Annoying.”

The little rabbit girl muttered under her breath.

 Klock heard her clearly.

”Since we’re done here, let’s head back to the carriage. We shouldn’t get in the way of her work.”

 Suddenly, Alice grabbed his arm.

She clung to him tightly, as if to flaunt their closeness right in front of Suzette.

Her red eyes locked straight onto the maid.

”So that’s settled. I’ll protect Klock, so you can rest easy, okay? ♡”

Her words were a dismissive wave.

Klock nearly jolted at the sudden intimacy. Suzette’s eyes widened in shock.

Alice clung closer, practically dragging him away.

Her behavior was far too suspicious, but Suzette neither followed nor protested.

No way she was unaffected, but Klock dared not look back to check.

”You idiot! What the hell are you doing!? Dropping hints like that—are you trying to expose us!?”

”Sorryyy. I got irritated, so I threw in a little warning shot. ♡”

 She exhaled, feigning boredom.

But if anyone was foolish here, it was this rabbit. Their alliance was supposed to be secret, yet she stirred trouble herself.

”What do you mean, irritated? You’ve just made her suspicious, without a doubt.”

”Not my fault. She was giving off that whole female rival vibe. Totally asking for it. Too smug.”

 ”…What?”

”Hmm… maybe I’ll steal him away. Wouldn’t that be fun?”

Alice glanced back over her shoulder.

 At Suzette, no doubt.

Her lips curled in a mocking smile.

”Heeeh. So this carriage is mine and Klock’s from now on, huh? ♡”

”…Rachel and Kaitney are sitting right here, you know.”

”Heehee♡ Then when we have secret talks, let’s whisper real soft, okay?”

 The lineup had shifted again.

Yesterday, it had been the usual crew.

Today, three new women surrounded him.

Up on the driver’s bench, Rachel held the reins while Kaitney sat beside her.

Inside, Alice had claimed the seat at Klock’s side, leaving no space at all between them.

After a while, the carriage finally began to roll, moving at little more than walking speed.

”Finally we’re off. But… isn’t this way too slow? The sun’s already high.”

”It’s your damn fault Boston’s gone. Because of you lot dragging him away, everything’s chaos here.”

 Today’s departure had been messy.

Packing camp, forming ranks, prepping for the march—every step was slow.

The new recruits lacked experience, and without Boston to command, there was no one to pull it together quickly.

”Hey, not my fault. I told Athena to stop. But she wouldn’t listen—kept saying he was her fated one. According to her divination, they’re the most compatible pair she’s ever seen. She even swore they were destined partners.”

 ”…Partners? Wait—you mean… marriage?”

”She went after him hard. I even had to help. She was already proposing before dragging him into the Crimson Spire. By now, they’re probably husband and wife.”

 ”…What.”

Klock didn’t know whether Boston was even alive. Yet Alice’s story didn’t sound like a lie.

So, Boston—swept up by a Succubus who fancied him, proposed to, and taken into another world? If that was true, it was far too cruel.

”Well, leaving the Succubus part aside—Athena’s a Harpy. And Harpies aren’t close to Humans, right? So when they choose a partner, it’s usually not just for one night. They rarely go all in unless it’s serious. That’s why, after her fortune told her the compatibility was perfect, she became dead set on him.”

 ”…You’ve gotta be kidding.”

Harpies were more alien than most.

Their arms ended in wings, their legs were thick and clawed like monsters.

Because they had no arms, they couldn’t even dress themselves; in their villages, going bare-breasted was the norm. Clothing was something they wore only when meeting other races.

The gap between Harpy and Human culture was vast.

Living together would mean changing one’s whole lifestyle. Only the most patient man could endure that.

”…This might be late to ask, but what exactly are Incubi and Succubi? I thought they were their own species. But then there’s you—rabbitfolk and Harpies—yet still called Succubus. What’s that about?”

”That way of thinking isn’t wrong. We’re beings of the Crimson Spire. Being born as a rabbit girl or bird girl doesn’t matter. Once you go there, you’re a Succubus.”

”…So in that other world, your real form shows?”

”Mm, not like we’re hiding it. Think about Merfolk. In the sea they’re fish-bodied, but on land they walk. In the Crimson Spire, wings sprout from my back too.”

 Her words clicked easily.

Primlena too became almost Human on land. Not fully—her heels, hips, and ears still carried fins that marked her for what she was.

”Each world has its own rules. Living things take on the color of the world they’re in. Strange, I know. It’s weird to even be connected across worlds. Anyway, my papa’s a male Succubus—an Incubus—and my mama’s from the Little Rabbit Tribe.”

 ”…So you’re a half-blood.”

”Bzzt! Wrong. There’s no such thing. Succubi don’t reproduce with their own kind. ‘Half-blood’ doesn’t exist for us.”

”…They don’t reproduce with each other?”

”Right. Male Succubi get women of this world pregnant. That’s how children are born.”

Not just “the wasteland”—she meant this world itself.

Incubi fathered children through the females of other races.

 ”And the females? The Succubi?”

”They all drain men dry. So, no one’s belly ever gets big. I don’t think it’s impossible for them to have kids… but since they use the energy up, it never takes root.”

The explanation was so bizarre Klock fell silent.

Succubi were even more alien than Harpies.

Compared to them, even Demonkin seemed closer to Humans.

”Anyway, let’s get back to the mission. We need to catch that spy fast. I know you’re curious about me, but—”

”I’m not. Quit talking like that.”

Alice leaned forward, pushing into his field of view with exaggerated puppy eyes.

Klock turned toward the front of the carriage, deliberately ignoring her.

On the driver’s bench, Rachel’s back looked restless as she lazily held the reins.

”…That skill. Shadow Walking. Do you know anyone who uses it?”

”Hmm. As far as I know in the Demon Lord’s Army, maybe two people.”

Alice shifted in her seat as she spoke.

Even closer now, pressing against Klock, her scent sweet and heavy.

If only she were a normal girl, not a Succubus.

”Isn’t Shadow Walking really rare? And there’s two of them?”

”Just rumors. I’ve only heard their names in passing. Having multiple users of the same Unique Skill is rare. If true, it’s a very rare case.”

Unique Skills themselves were already rare.

Some were known from history; others had never been recorded.

Shadow Walking was known well enough, yet among Humans it had never surfaced. With such a useful ability, an adventurer using it would become famous instantly. But no such rumor existed.

”The ones I heard about—one’s an Earth Human. The other’s a Vampire. Don’t quote me too hard on it.”

 ”…Vampire? Don’t tell me Viola—”

”Vio-Vio’s Unique Skill is the Cursed Eye of the Blood Mirror. So it’s someone else.”

 Klock froze.

She had dropped something outrageous as if it were nothing.

”…The Cursed Eye of the Blood Mirror? What’s that?”

”Vio-Vio’s cursed eye. Her right eye is one of the rarest things ever—two separate cursed powers crammed into a single eyeball. A fusion of the Cursed Eye of the Moon Mirror and the Vampiric Cursed Eye. That’s why they named it the Cursed Eye of the Blood Mirror.”

 ”…You’re serious? That’s even possible?”

”Maybe the first time in history. Something that can only happen to Vampires. A coincidence within a coincidence.”

So that was the secret of her strange right eye.

Maybe that grotesque right eye of hers looked less like an eye because of it. Klock had known Viola carried two cursed powers, but never guessed both were jammed into a single orb.

Unique Skills usually came one to a person. That rarity was why people called it the Cursed Eye of the Blood Mirror.

…Wait. Did this rabbit girl really have no hesitation blurting out another’s Unique Skill?

Or did she just not care because it belonged to another race?

 If so…

”…By the way. I get the cursed eye thing. But what about her making doubles of herself? Is that magic?”

”Oooh, trying to squeeze info out of me? I don’t mind spilling about Vampires, but Vio-Vio’s a tiny bit close with Lady Kispe. So, nope—can’t tell you that.”

 ”Now you clam up?”

The rabbit-eared Succubus snapped her mouth shut at once.

Annoying. She had already given away more than most would. Still, one slip was enough to prove she might again.

”Fine. But aren’t you lot at odds with the Demonkin? The Demon Lord—”

 ”Nope!”

She cut him off sharp, twisting away with a pout.

Women, once they realized they were being used, turned their backs. Even a Succubus wasn’t different there.

Push too hard and the chance would vanish. But pulling back now seemed too late.

Primlena barely knew a thing about land-dwellers.

 But this one—this Alice—clearly did.

If she knew even a little about the Demon Lord’s ability, that knowledge alone could turn the war.

”Come on. Didn’t we say we’d work together? This is cooperation. Cultural exchange, right?”

 ”Hmm. Maaaybe…”

Klock slid an arm across her shoulders, leaning in as though to reel her closer.

Alice fidgeted theatrically, tilting her head, squirming like some shy maiden.

”Toooootally depends on you, Klock. If you treat me right, I might tell you.”

”Oh yeah? What does ‘treat you right’ mean?”

”Easy. Be my lover. Sleep with me, and I’ll spill everything.”

His arm slipped, nearly pitching him onto the floor. He scrambled back upright.

 ”…What… the hell…”

Alice grinned wide, her bunny face sugary sweet—yet underneath, nothing but Succubus malice.

She wasn’t some Human girl. Klock had known, but he had to remind himself again.

”Not a chance in hell. Forget it.”

”Why not? You’ve been with plenty of girls besides the Hero.”

 ”…That’s… not the same.”

”Fufu♡ Honestly, I like you, Mr. Klock. You’re a mess. Not captain-like at all. Just my type. I can’t help but imagine—if a bad man like you did whatever he wanted to me, my heart might burst~”

”Who the hell are you calling a loser?”

 Exactly. Damn rabbit.

 ”Heehee♡”

She leaned in closer, rubbing her small body against him like a needy cat.

”Cut it out. I know damn well what happens to men who touch a Succubus.”

”If you want secrets, you’ll need to take that risk.”

”Damn it. What good’s knowing if I end up dead?”

That smug little face smirked up at him. Always taunting.

She wasn’t strong—certainly not towering—but she strutted and swayed her hips like a predator.

Most women feared being pressed by men. Succubi reversed it.

They didn’t have to fear desire—they fed on it.

So they stood tall, cocky. Like any Human man swaggering before weaker village girls.

That nature made her see herself above him.

Sex gave her power. That was the law of the world.

”We Succubi have desires too, y’know. Especially me—I’m rabbit-blooded, always restless. Sometimes I just wanna be wrecked by a man.

Don’t worry. I won’t tell anyone your secrets. But if you made me yours, I’d end up telling you everything. Because lovers matter more than work.”

Alice crawled onto his lap, closing the gap to almost nothing.

Barely ten centimeters apart—close enough her breath tickled his skin.

If he leaned in just slightly, he could steal her lips.

”Want to be cherished by Alice Lau? I’ll even take you home—to the Crimson Spire.”

 ”…Goddamn you.”

Pointless. Her demand wasn’t something he’d ever grant.

Lay with a Succubus, and you died. He’d seen too many corpses already to doubt that truth.

 He shelved the talk.

Still… the thought lingered. Could it really kill him, just like that? A stubborn part of him clung to doubt.

 *

”Shadow Walking’s also called Shadow Diving. You slip into shadows. But if light hits you, that spot stays dark while the rest is bright, so it’s obvious. Worse, you can’t even move when lit up.”

 ”So light smokes them out.”

”Exactly. So what if our next camp’s on open ground? Ring the place with bonfires, then sweep the area with torches.”

 ”…Not bad. Might work.”

 …

 …

 …

”There’s no open ground nearby. And why expose ourselves where we’re easy targets? This is a battlefield.”

 It was past noon.

During a rest in the mountains, Klock had pitched Alice’s idea to Suzette. She shot it down without a second’s pause.

”We could run into the Demon Lord’s Army at any time. Walking into their scouts’ line of sight is foolish.”

”Riiight. Just throwing it out there~” Alice stuck her tongue out playfully.

Suzette’s glare still lingered in Klock’s mind, sharp enough to make him turn his eyes away. Of course she would react like that. The truth was obvious: Brigante wasn’t heading into a warzone—it was already marching through one.

She spun on her heel and walked away briskly.

Did she think he was a fool? Maybe. He couldn’t shake the feeling.

And stranger still, Suzette hadn’t said a single word about Alice. Klock had braced himself for a lecture, but she hadn’t even mentioned the rabbit girl clinging to him earlier. That silence—yeah, that was worse. That meant Suzette was truly angry. Winning back her mood would take work.

That damn rabbit girl… always stirring up trouble.

But beyond personal headaches, the strategy problem remained. Suzette had crushed Alice’s idea with ease, and she was right. Light would expose them to the Demon Lord’s Army long before it caught a spy. Even if they flooded the night with torches, the infiltrator would just slip from one shadow to the next.

No clean answer came to mind.

He could ask Cianie again—but if even her senses failed, then the conclusion would be that nobody was there. Which only left them cornered, hands tied.

Time dragged on while Klock mulled it over. All around the camp, young recruits sat in travel clothes, huddled around a battered skillet. They laughed and teased each other over meals that grew thinner by the day. Plenty of voices around—yet no one he could confide in.

Which left him with only one option: talk to the infuriating rabbit.

Alice sat at the back of the carriage, kicking her legs idly. She greeted him with a dazzling smile, too sweet for someone so dangerous.

”So yeah, that plan’s useless. Got any oth—”

 ”Please♡ Be the bait♡”

Her sing-song plea dropped like a knife.

Palms pressed together, fingers folded, she tilted her head and begged as if asking for candy.

”…Wait. You’re not actually planning to get me killed, are you?”

”No waaay. You dying would be such a problem.”

 ”Some reassurance.”

Still, the logic was sound: if they couldn’t find the spy, then force the spy to act.

”I’ll hide off to the side. You walk alone, look exposed. If the spy doesn’t strike, it means their goal isn’t you. See? That’s info too.”

”…True enough. I am the leader here. Whether they move on me says a lot.”

It wasn’t a bad plan. If the spy stayed quiet, that meant they were either only observing or too cautious to engage. Both were useful to know.

”Still, it might not just be one spy,” Klock muttered.

Alice’s grin widened. “That’s fine. You remember the forest, right? Bang bang in front, and stabby-stab from behind.”

”…That’s one way to put it.”

He thought back. They’d already had chances last night, and again at dawn when he slept alone. Yet nothing had happened. That argued for a single infiltrator, cautious to a fault.

”Then maybe they’re after the Hero. If so, ignoring them might be an option.”

 ”Exactly! It’s impossible anyway.”

Klock had to agree. Anyone foolish enough to aim at Cianie would be detected and cut down instantly. Her Stellar Skill made assassination practically impossible. Not even the Demon Lord could touch her without knowing her secret.

…Though Kispe was another story. Something about her stirred unease.

”Fine. Tonight we’ll try it. I’ll make myself a target. Not that I trust you to keep me safe.”

”Pfft! Leave it to me!” Alice puffed her chest out proudly, apron dress stretching against curves too mature for her childlike frame.

”You? Protect me? Please. You’re useless.”

 ”…Haaah?”

Her little boot stomped against his shin, leaving dusty prints on his trousers. Klock scowled.

 ”Ha! Don’t get cocky, weakling.”

He dusted off his pants and stepped back from the carriage, taunting her further. Succubus or not, Alice wasn’t much in a straight fight. Her kind relied on charm, not strength.

 Or so he thought.

”…Did you just… call me weak? Me?!”

Her ears twitched. Her smile sharpened.

A moment later, the tiny rabbit girl hefted a double-headed axe nearly as big as she was. Power rolled off her in waves.

Klock paled. Alice smirked, eyes gleaming.

The wolf who prowled over women now found himself chased.

Around camp, while soldiers cleaned up their meals, a ridiculous game began:

 The wolf ran.

 The rabbit hunted.
