Even though Lewya was the one being teased, I kept getting hit by stray comments, and it made me feel really awkward.
”Hehe, but it’s true, right? If Lewya has kids, she won’t be lonely. Hey, Neil, how many children do you think she’d need to not feel alone?”
”Stop! Don’t drag me into this!”
Weren’t we having a serious talk just a moment ago? Now I’m the one being humiliated? Sure, I’ve thought about having children someday—but not now! Not like this!
”…It’s getting late. If we keep making noise out here, people might notice. Now that Lewya’s back, let’s go inside.”
”Oh no you don’t.”
Diana tried to head toward the mansion, but Mei grabbed her shoulder, stopping her.
”What’s with that innocent face like this has nothing to do with you? Diana, I already know what you’re up to.”
”…What are you talking about?”
”You’re trying to get Neil and me married.”
”!!”
The moment Mei said that, Diana flinched. She tried to walk away again, but Mei grabbed her other shoulder.
”It’s always the same story. When the master gets married, the servant who used to be close to him loses his affection. Usually, the noble wife doesn’t like seeing the master treat a common servant with love. But I don’t care about things like that. Even if Neil ends up with you, or Lewya, or anyone else—and even if he has children with them—if he still loves me and our children just the same, I won’t complain. That’s why you were trying to help me get closer to Neil, right? So you wouldn’t be left behind after he gets married.”
So that’s what it was? I had always wondered why Mei only supported the idea when it involved her—and why she got upset if it was someone else.
”…I don’t understand what you’re saying. I only thought… Meisy-sama truly supports Neil-sama.”
”Oh really? Still pretending, huh?”
”I’m not lying. I’m his servant. I’d never have such improper wishes—”
”Is that so? Then are you saying you don’t want children with Neil?”
”T-That’s not it.”
”You called me out, but now you want to hide your own feelings? Isn’t that kind of selfish?”
”Well… that’s only because Meisy-sama lost control and revealed everything herself!”
”Shut it!”
That must’ve been during that time—when I was blindfolded and didn’t know it was Mei in front of me.
It’s true… that time, Mei had gotten carried away and revealed her feelings without thinking. Now flustered, she shouted to cover her embarrassment, then spun Diana around so she was facing me.
”We’re past the point of caring about who’s a servant or not. Diana, you’re the only one still hung up on that.”
”But… still…”
”I may not care much about ranks, but honestly, I don’t think people care as much as you think. So what if Neil has a child with someone like you? What’s the big deal?”
”Lewya’s right,” Mei added. “If this were some other noble house, sure—they’d go on and on about titles and proper heirs. But we don’t care about that, right? Even if outsiders gossip, why should we let that stop us? Diana, are you really going to let their words make you give up?”
”I…”
Even after Lewya and Mei pushed her forward, Diana’s eyes were still full of hesitation.
Normally, I’d avoid this kind of talk. It’s embarrassing. But I know… this time, that’s not the right thing to do.
”Look… I’m not the kind of guy who acts like nothing happened. I couldn’t live with myself if I kept my distance just because things got a little complicated. So, um…”
I knew what I had to say. But saying it out loud still made me feel like sinking into the floor.
Even so, I had to do it. As a man, I had to say it clearly.
”…If you’re okay with it, Diana… I want to have children with you too.”
”────!”
Diana’s lips tightened as if to keep the words from spilling out. But her eyes widened, and tears welled up at the corners.
”Come on, Diana,” Mei said softly. “Neil found the courage to say that. Now it’s your turn.”
She gently pushed Diana forward. Now standing just in front of me, Diana turned her head slightly, cheeks red.
”…”
”Hey… say something. If you leave me hanging now, I’ll be the most embarrassed guy on the planet.”
